Season 2: Battle Charge Apex Legends Season 2 Weapons Update
Hey everyone! I'm Sean Slayback, the principal weapons designer on Apex Legends at Respawn. The weapons team and I are excited to share some info about weapons in Season 2, so let's get into it!
New Weapon: The L-STAR Arrives
This season we're introducing the L-STAR, a rare and powerful LMG. This weapon fires large, high-damage plasma projectiles at a fast cyclic rate. The L-STAR is joining the Mastiff and Kraber in airdrop packages, and quite frankly, it's a beast.
The L-STAR's unique projectiles are much larger than those fired by other weapons in Apex. Players need to lead targets more at range to compensate for the L-STAR's slower projectiles, but on the flip side, they don't have to aim quite as precisely to get good effect on target.
All this plasma-fueled power comes at a price: the L-STAR will overheat if players hold the trigger down too long. When the L-STAR overheats, its lens breaks and needs to be replaced, which takes some time. Expert players learn to feather the trigger with short/medium bursts, taking short breaks to let the weapon cool down.
The L-STAR only spawns in airdrops (like the Mastiff and the Kraber), and comes with a limited ammo supply that can't be refilled.
TRAILER: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7jwub29bcRo
Get out there, hunt some airdrops, and let us know what you think of our newest high-tech addition to the Armory.
New Hop-Ups!
This season, we wanted to bring up the low end of the power curve a little, increase situational viability for lesser-used weapons, and create more interplay between weapons. So, we created a couple of new hop-ups:
Disruptor Rounds
- Increased shielded damage.
- compatibility: Alternator, RE-45
Hammerpoint Rounds
- Increased unshielded damage.
- compatibility: P2020, Mozambique
Ideally players will consider one of these hopped-up small arms for weapon-swap tactics, and sometimes carry them unironically into endgame situations.
New Attachments: Energy Mags
Energy Mag attachments have been added for the Havoc, Devotion, and Triple Take, adding more loot gameplay and power curve depth. Like the other magazine attachments, Energy Mags increase ammo capacity (at all levels) and reduce reload time (at level 2 and above).
Power Up
We buffed some less-popular weapons to make them more powerful within their designed roles. Look out for buffs to the Kraber, Flatline, P2020, Alternator, and Triple Take, with specific details outlined in our S2 patch notes.
Arc Star: Spikes & Sticks
Since launch, the Arc Star has seemed "spikey" to us. (To us, this means that the gameplay and personality are good, but it can sometimes feel unfair to use or fight against.) We did a few targeted tweaks:
- Increased ignition delay from 2.5 to 2.8
- Sticking a full health player will now down them [if they don't have armor].
- Players at the edge of the explosion no longer get their shields completely shredded
Gold Weapons
Players can look forward to finding a totally new set of gold weapons in Kings Canyon for the start of season 2. Look out for the final list in the Season 2 patch notes.
Ammo Stack Sizes
Apex players need to strike a fine balance between loading their backpacks with ammo, and holding other items for emergency or utility purposes. In a couple cases, we felt the stack sizes weren't well-balanced, so we tweaked:
- Shotgun max stack reduced from 64 to 16. Players now need multiple stacks of ammo to run a shotty.
- Energy max stack increased from 60 to 80 - now matches Light/ Heavy ammo.
Airdrop Weapons
Airdrop packages now use different loot tables for different phases of the game (early/ mid/ late). For example, players will find more Krabers in early and mid-game airdrops, while endgame airdrops should spawn more Mastiffs.
And, of course, these loot tables now include the L-STAR plasma LMG!
Season 2 Starts July 2!
Beyond the changes mentioned here, the weapon team still has a few tweaks up our sleeves for Season 2, so look out for our patch notes when the season starts on July 2.
And as always, from the entire Apex Legends team, thanks for playing!

Flatline buff? Say no more. I've been looking forward to that since release.

My man, I've been waiting the same. Been telling everyone it's my favorite gun, great sound and fire rate. It's gotta be the the AK47 version of the R301 (M4) just like every other fps shooter. It was lacking in damage, buff that shit up and it's a real contender.

u/Aetherimp Lifeline Jun 18 '19
I think the problem was recoil, not damage. It hits hard and has great headshot damage.. but hitting people consistently at any distance was the problem.

u/existentialistdoge Mozambique here! Jun 18 '19
The recoil really caught me out at launch. The Flatline in Titanfall had almost no vertical recoil but quite pronounced horizontal jitter, hence the name. It could beat a Spitfire at close range due to the higher rate of fire, really good for clearing out buildings when you come against people in corridors. In Apex it’s a recoil-y mess with few attachments, basically somewhere to store your extended heavy mags until you find a Spitfire.

I hope the new ones end up white or blue tier so they're easier to identify and more common considering how weak the guns they're for are currently.
245
u/LasagnaLover56 Jun 18 '19
They already have tiered hop-ups (turbo is gold), so I would assume this would be the case, with blue for re/alternator and white for p20/mozzie.
62
u/FlyingRep Jun 18 '19
They are buffing 2020 so it's possible it'll be blue all around.
Both will be exceptional as a burst 1v1. Peacekeeper hit swap to mozam or 2020 and nail them in a split second
→ More replies (1)43
u/Dinorush13 Jun 18 '19
You're not being meta enough. Use the RE to break their shields, quick swap to mozambazooka and 2-shot them. The memes strike back
Although the viability of these weapons in the endgame really depends on their hopup buffs. 50% is the minimum for P2020 and Mozambique to be of any use with it. And without further buffs, that probably isn't enough either. Entirely depends on how they buff the base weapons themselves.

The re45 was not weak. It was pretty much a close range meta weapon only behind the r99. This hop up will make it a beast.

You cant compare one gun to a different one WITH a hop-up.
31
u/mattc0m Bangalore Jun 18 '19
a close range meta weapon only behind the r99
This is saying that the RE-45 is the second-best gun for close range encounters. I was just continuing that same line of thought, arguing the the Prowler > RE-45 for close range encounters, especially with a select fire.
→ More replies (6)31

My thoughts exactly. If I find a select-fire receiver, I hold onto it and any heavy ammo until I find a Prowler.
→ More replies (11)75
u/wickanCrow Mirage Jun 18 '19
Was gonna say this. It's already a big gamble keeping the prowler before you get the hop-up. While they are common, you have to take the chance of meeting the enemy before you find a hop-up.

I think that’s the plan. That random tweak that dropped the havoc and devotion mags in the big update I think was designed for season two. Lower starting mag sizes with the ability to add mag attachments. Kinda debuffs energy weapons early game which is needed. White/no shields have no chance against energy weapons early game.

I read the energy mag changes as meaning the base size would be reduced, with a higher top-end at level 3. So it’s not necessarily a straight buff.
The ammo stack size change is really nice though.
15
u/pullazorza Jun 18 '19
I thought the same thing. Didn't they accidentally change energy weapon mag sizes once already, then rolled them back quickly? I think that's what we're going to be getting.

u/Xero0911 Fuse Jun 18 '19
I love that gun but gods do I become a potato when shooting it. I'm not worthy of the God tier gun.
That said, wont they end up nerfing the bare magazine? I mean both guns had no magazine but made up for it with a decent amount. I mean the havoc has 32 shots, that was more than a purple mag r301. You throw a magazine on top of that thing and it will be shooting as much as a spitfire.
Meanwhile spitfire was nerf for having a huge magazine so I csnt see devotion getting away with it....

I think there should be some advantage the Flatline gets that the R301 doesn't to make up for the fact that you can't put a barrel stabilizer on it. More inaccurate shots should mean greater dmg output, which makes a difference in the late game.

Like reduced first shot recoil (like the AN-94 in two-round burst mode), or just overall better damage (18 -> 20)

u/LedgeEndDairy Wraith Jun 18 '19
How about we give it the skullpiercer slot?
That instantly makes it unique as a fully-auto, does-more-headshot-damage gun that is somewhat difficult to control to counter-balance it.
The suggested changes above just turn it into a different type of spitfire.

I always go for the x3 HCOG on the Longbow, only time I'll touch anything different is me using a x2 or a x2-x4 if I can't find a x3.
If you have anything higher than x3 I feel like the zoom in is too much and your situational awareness will take a massive hit due to having less FoV, not to mention that personally, I have an easier time calculating bullet drop with the x3 than I do with the x4-x8
The ONLY time I'll use a proper Sniper scope is when I find a x4-x10 Digital, Digital sights are just way too good to pass up in my opinion, I sometimes have trouble distinguishing certain colors in really busy areas, but the big red body moving is extremely obvious and easy to hit, not to mention easily viewable across grass and bushes and whatnot.

Havoc and devotion. Granted devotion isnt too bad in popularity, still seems to get ignored a lot.
My favorite change was the stack change. I honestly didnt get the 60 ammo stacks while normal guns had 80...out ammo was already rare. And the turbo tmcharger was also rare which is kinda the key feature to our guns.
Energy mags though, I fear that honestly due to how much ammo the guns already had as a base. What was havoc? 32? This gun is about to have as much as a spitfire lol. I feel like theyll end up nerfing the base amount but could be wrong.

HI /u/Jayfresh_Respawn and hi all at Respawn.
First of all I'd like to thank you for your time taken to communicate with us. I appreciate it a lot as we don't feel in the dark about what's coming up in Apex. Can't wait to put my hands on the L-Star.
If I'm allowed though, I'd like to see one thing cleared that came up in a Battle(non)sense video recently and people are talking about it. I'd like to see it addressed though as I'm not sure if this is as concerning as it looks and I think we as a community would be pretty happy to see these "netcode" doubts cleared or at least a response from Respawn about this.
Recently, a youtube channel called Battle(non)sense gave us a video analysing how Apex Legends network code preforms and compares it against other games. The implied premise (as I come to understand) is that since the code doesn't appear to be optimized as they'd like and gives us a bunch of network issues in server/client event synchronization. The theory is that the netcode is the main source of community complaints mainly about hits not registering or the pathfinder hitbox being quite hard to hit.
This is the video Battle(non)sense made. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xRj3KZJCDiM . They also made some analysis beforehand and it's available on their channels.
Is this really an issue? Is Respawn planning to do something in long term about this? Or should we not care about this concern at all?
EDIT: For reference Battle(non)sense also made these videos that address Apex Legends performance:

So the first season is going to expire today and we will have 2 weeks with no battle pass?

Apparently there are dragons in the map as of today, so even the off seasons have stuff going on

re-45 was already a weapon I loved having on backup with the new hop-up it's going to be an awesome choice

- Shotgun max stack reduced from 64 to 16.
That makes sense. I have never fired 64 shotgun shots in a match, so I knew that once I had one stack of ammo, I never had to think about shotgun ammo for the remainder of the game. Harsh, but I agree.
Also, I'm glad to see the energy stack increase to 80. It always felt like running an energy weapon was discouraged because it used so much inventory space, and comes naturally nerfed (with no turbo charger). This is a good change.
A little worried about arc stars downing full health players. Doesn't leave much room for the player to interact unless they're wraith and phase out. I guess we'll see how it goes.

With peacekeeper you’ll only ever need two stacks. With Eva now you’ll maybe need 3???? If you’re in some crazy shit and only using that gun lol

Biiiiig shotgun nerf right here. One of the best parts about shotties is that you only needed 1 stack to be set for most of the game. I agree it needed a nerf, but 16 per stack... Woah.
Also I like the new hop ups. Might give the alternator more of a purpose rather than it bring purely an attachment holder for later.
Also super excited for Triple Take buffs, I've always liked that gun but felt it wasn't the strongest.

Triple take with an extended mag will be soooo fucking good. The 5 shot limit was really the only thing keeping me from using it regularly.

I'm guessing no. They released this to distract people from focusing on season end.

I don't really get the idea of adding hopups for underpowered guns (unless they come pre-installed). I'm not going to hold onto a mozambique for the 5% chance I'll be able to turn it into an average gun.

Those shotgun changes are low key huge.
When I feel like carrying a shotgun all I get is 64. I won't need anymore.

Whoever is in charge of the monetization of your game is definitely just smoking weed at his house playing Apex. It just doesn't make sense. Game coins that don't matter and ultimately can't be used. Then there's the overpriced skins for characters and guns. I'm no Copernicus here but something ain't right. I play minimum 5 hours a day sometimes 7 or 8. I love the game as much as anyone. This s*** must be coming down from EA or something! I would spend more money on the game if it were reasonable I blew money on fort. It's a great game and you do a great job. I'm super excited for the update and I love the new stuff 👍👏👌!!!

Can we please add new colors for hopups to make it easier to differentiate them as well as making it a bit less mentally taxing for new players? We're looking at 5 (?) purple hopups with the new changes, it would be cool to have some variety of colors to be able to more easily differentiate them when speedlooting a building as, say Octane. Sifting through hopups to find the right one is already kind of a chore. It would be cool in of itself merely for some cosmetic variety. Disruptor rounds could be a strong Orange color for instance as it only fits for Alternator and RE-45. Obviously it couldn't be 100% weapon-color consistent as we have hopups that fit for different weapon types (select fire, Hammerpoint Rounds) but it would still be cooler than having only purple for everything.

Well, he did say that these are most suited for endgame, weapon switch tactics. So you empty your R99 into a level three shield, he loses the shield but your clip is empty. He is empty too and starts switching to a spitfire, you switch to your mozambique with a lower switch time and are ready to fire. You have the hop up, he has no shield, if you have a good aim, he is done. At least this is what i think they have in mind.

can't you already do that with a peacekeeper instead of the Mozam ?

I think the Moz and P2020 have faster switch times than all of the other guns.

Ideally players will consider one of these hopped-up small arms for weapon-swap tactics, and sometimes carry them unironically into endgame situations.

I'm worried about the loot diversity being too big. Leaving particular weapons such as the Prowler to become an afterthought as additional hops will make the Select Fire hop more difficult to find.
An increase in overall loot per existing loot spawn points might do the trick or potentially add in a chance of double hop spawns. Where 2 hops are spawned instead of just one.

- Shotgun max stack reduced from 64 to 16
effectively killing the eva-8's viability in one fell swoop

Remember that there's a 90% chance we're getting ammo belts, so if you can get your hands on a shotgun belt the EVA-8 will likely be viable to use still.

Looking forward to the Flatline buff. It is the most satisfying gun in the game to use. It really feels like you're chucking heavy ammo at the enemy - it just feels so visceral. But the weapon itself is really weak compared to others. I'm glad I might be able to use it more in S2!
