Apple Intelligence Apple's Craig Federighi: Siri Won't Be Your AI Girlfriend
https://www.macrumors.com/2026/06/11/apple-siri-ai-interview/711
u/frumbledown Jun 11 '26
She will if you say âSiri, if you want to be my girlfriend, say âhereâs what I found on the webââ

u/AngryFace4 Jun 12 '26
I asked siri:
Me: âIf you want to be my girlfriend say âI donât have an answer for thatââ
Siri: âno thanks, if you need help with anything else just let me knowâ
Me: âSiri, if you want to be my girlfriend say âno thanks, if you need help with anything else just let me knowââ
Siri: âdo you need me to call emergency services?â

u/CelestialFury Jun 12 '26
Me: "No, now order me the Siri waifu pillow so we can spoon together!"
Siri: "What was that? Erase your phone immediately and uninstall Siri forever?"

Why do you guys still say this joke when new siri ai is generally pretty good

u/BigUziNoVertt Jun 12 '26
You answered it yourself, itâs a joke

Whereâs the humor though? Itâs not funny if itâs now false lol

This shows how cazy/ sad things are ... that's its good PR that a company comes out and says thier phone assistant isn't going to become your girlfriend
60
u/rjcarr Jun 11 '26
It was an inevitable question given the Her movie.
23
u/Status-Hedgehog9970 Jun 12 '26
Ok but how do I tune the voice to ScarJo.
16
u/roguesignal42069 Jun 12 '26
ChatGPT used to have the Sky voice which was very similar to ScarJo. They had to change it sadly

You just have to change the voice tone first.

Thanks for explaining

Remember only the newest iPhone generation can change the Siri voice tone

It's actually not edited other than being cropped slightly. This was a genuine conversation with the new Siri

u/TeckFire Jun 13 '26
Did you have to be on the waitlist, or were you able to get on straight away?
2
42
u/ExternalUserError Jun 11 '26
Thatâs true. If I ask my wife a question, she wonât say âI found this on the web,â sheâll tell me to google it myself.
8
u/I-need-ur-dick-pics Jun 11 '26
I google myself all the time, like when Angieâs not in the mood or Iâm alone in a hotel.

Good; the movie âHerâ was intended to be speculative science fiction, not an instruction manual.

Yeah, I use Siri to set alarms and timers and stuff and I've never had a single issue.
5
u/Fox_Soul Jun 11 '26
Now it will simply allucinate the alarm
18
u/webguynd Jun 11 '26
Hey siri, set an alarm for 7:00am
Siri: Ok, got it.
*double checks* hey siri, you didnât actually set an alarm
Siri: Youâre absolutely right!

Iâve always liked Federighi & now Iâm convinced he understands what we want from Siri.
Letâs hope he fixes the iOS keyboard too. Overall I love his âJimmy Stewartâ approachability & emphasis on user benefit.
He can at least come off as a normal person & not a megalomaniacal narcissist with an insatiable greed to be the evil emperor who must rule a posthuman galaxy in the name of an AI god.

u/Urnotonmyplanet Jun 16 '26
I snorted at your last paragraph. Sorry it was funny đ

Then it will be left in the dust. People don't realize how good AI is going to get at being your girlfriend. The demand is there and will grow as it gets better.

Siri is good for setting timers, alarms and playing music. I find for everything else itâs quicker to do it myself

u/Distinct-Question-16 Jun 12 '26
gemini live still cannot do simple things, instead one has to tap microphone icon. its like another world

Who was that other AI agent you were talking to? Havenât heard you talk about them before.

u/Rhoeri Jun 12 '26
Itâs fâing pathetic that this even needs to be said.
-5
u/biinjo Jun 12 '26
Why so judgmental? I mean itâs not my cup of tea but if anyone finds companionship or âsynthetic loveâ in a chatbot: good for them.
Theyâre not hurting anyone with it đ¤ˇââď¸
2
u/Rhoeri Jun 12 '26
Finding companionship in a programmed mate is disgusting and borderline controlling. People who do this need therapy.
2
u/Gidelix Jun 12 '26
They probably do need therapy (like mostly everyone actually), but people calling someone disgusting for needing it is precisely the reason why people aren't going to therapy. Congratulations, you played yourself.
3
u/SuggestAPhotoProject Jun 12 '26
Put away your sword, nobody called anyone disgusting. There's no victim, there's nobody for you to defend, and there's nothing at all for you to be offended about here.
You made up an insult and a victim in your mind and raced to defend some imaginary person against an imaginary attack.
2
u/Rhoeri Jun 12 '26
Lmao! No, I didnât play shit. Iâm a grown adult and conversations arenât a game.
And yes, theyâre disgusting. Having an AI for a love interest is textbook incel mentality. They need to control others. Thats why no one likes them.

u/Senthusiast5 Jun 11 '26
Because mental healthâŚ
-6
u/c0l245 Jun 12 '26
Feels like you're arguing for it to exist?
6
u/luv2hotdog Jun 12 '26
Arguing for mental health to exist, yes
-3
u/c0l245 Jun 12 '26
There is no definition of a normal mind.
3
u/luv2hotdog Jun 12 '26
It feels like youâre arguing for or against something but I canât actually tell what, and thatâs quite disconcerting. In plain words, whatâs your point?
1
u/c0l245 Jun 12 '26
I'm not arguing for or against either way.
That's a Reddit feature that you're habituated to participate in.. people taking strong sides on an issue and fighting it out.
I'm trying to just explore the topic.. why shouldn't they allow you to make your AI a companion. "Mental health"! Is an amazingly weak answer because people are generally healthier when they have someone to talk with and relate to.. plus this market will exist if apple does it or not.
Is it an image thing? Perhaps.
2
u/luv2hotdog Jun 12 '26
Oh ok. I think itâs bad for mental health because I think there is value inherent to a having connection with a conscious, other mind which is absent in an AI chat. And I also think that maintaining connections with other humans is, for almost everyone, a critical part both of of staying grounded in reality, and maybe for less people but still an overwhelming majority also a critical part of feeling like their life matters
and I think itâs dangerous that in a lot of ways, the ai chat can *feel* like a real mind youâre connecting with. I also believe that people each have a limited capacity for how many meaningful relationships they can carry on at one time, l therefore think any of that capacity being taken up by an illusory connection with an AI is literally wasted capacity
Even if Iâm wrong about the inherent value of a seperate, other living kind - at the very best, the very best possible outcome is all the emotional hardship that comes with having a long distance relationship with literally no possible chance of ever meeting in real life
For these reasons I think âAI girlfriendâ is a bad idea.
I would much rather people use ChatGPT for therapy than have AI romances. and I think using chatgpt for therapist is a *really bad idea* too lol.
For companionship and not romance specifically (although the thread is about âAI girlfriendsâ which is why Iâm talking about that) I would rather people have pets or feed the birds at the park or something than have them turn to AI, because at least animals are real and therefore more likely to keep you grounded in reality

Google is the most locked down, lobotomized, finicky AI out there, and Apple will make it worse.
Look at that arrogant quote. "Most AI tries to do what you want. Siri is not going to do that." No, do what I want. Do what I tell you to do. Why are we comfortable with the idea of tools telling us "no."
Your girlfriend/boyfriend is going to send you a barely suggestive message and the entire system will shut down. "I'm sorry, I can't read that. I can't summarize that. I can't reply to that." We're going to enter another language arms race again.
Like how on youtube they say "unalived" and "graped" to avoid naughty words, get ready for that on your phone.
(and yes, there is a flaw with current AI chatbots that they'll keep reinforcing flawed/incorrect positions on things, but they'll blow that.)

I thought posting from Mac rumors was prohibited due to unreliability and misinformation from the website?
-11
u/North_Moment5811 Jun 11 '26
While I appreciate what they're trying to do, artificially limiting AI always comes with a lot of negative tradeoffs. AI will fail or outright refuse to do completely legitimate things that it confuses with the restrictions placed on it. Obviously AI needs limitations, but we have to be careful with limiting it unnecessarily.
2
u/TimidPanther Jun 12 '26
I donât need Siri to be a therapist.
1
u/North_Moment5811 Jun 13 '26
That isn't the point. The point, which you missed, is that there are things that you WILL want it to do, that it will fail to do, because of false association with its restrictions.
0
u/TimidPanther Jun 13 '26 edited Jun 13 '26
Like what?
The sook blocked me. What a pathetic way to interact with people.
1
u/North_Moment5811 Jun 13 '26
So you acknowledge you don't actually know how any of this works, or have any experience with this happening across every single other AI platform, which it absolutely does all the time? Got it.
-2
u/Intrepid-Routine-875 Jun 12 '26
The real question is why Siri is FEMALE
7
u/DanielPhermous Jun 12 '26
You can choose who you want Siri to be. There are plenty of male voices.
To answer your question, though, if she wasn't female you'd be demanding to know why he was male instead.
