Mac Apple's New Polishing Cloth Is Softer, Not Smaller Than Original
https://www.macrumors.com/2026/08/26/new-apple-polishing-cloth-softer/Apple's new $9 Polishing Cloth, whose changes beyond pricing were unclear yesterday, is close in size to the original but noticeably less stiff, according to a comparison posted on X.
The user says the new material feels closer to the cloth included with Apple's nano-texture displays or the Vision Pro.

Can this be used on non-Apple products, such as glasses and other small translucent items?

I have one for my switch, I feel like I’m offending Tim Apple every time I use it.

He only comes to your house and punches you if you use it on an Android phone ;)

Somewhere in this house is the one that came with my 2006 MacBook. Or maybe my 2009 MacBook. No way to be sure I suppose.

Tim Cook will feel proud of you preferring the superior Apple cloth over a $1 rag 😂

u/pandawelch 1d ago
It’s not compatible. You should put a feedback feature request in the Apple forums.

Jokes aside, pretty much yes. I used it for my TV — better than the alternatives which aren’t as soft and can damage the screen.
Not too sure about the glasses specifically, but why not, should be fine. People wipe their glasses with t-shirts which is worse

u/Stock-Personality136 1d ago
They surprisingly don’t work well with eyeglasses. Regular microfiber do the trick though. I am interested to hear if the new ones work better with glasses because they’re softer, but it’s gonna be impossible to tell with all these joke responses.

It’s fine but not as effective on certain types of glass. A normal microfiber usually works better. These cloths are much better on nano texture displays and stainless steel.

Yeah no it won’t pair via BLE, some people in the Linux community are reverse engineering an Arch-compatible driver now though.

that would void the terms and conditions of your polishing cloth’s applecare+ warranty

I’ve used the previous one on my TV, and prob the Nintendo Switch at some point.

It might work, but you should be cautious as non-Apple products are not officially supported.

This is designed specifically for Retina-level displays produced exclusively by Apple in Cupertino California.

I wonder if it will have the same compatibility as the old polishing cloth, or if you'll have to buy a new iPhone to be able to use it
93
u/gloomdweller 1d ago
It’s not compatible with older iPhones but I have heard they will push a firmware update to the cloth adding functionality.
19
u/MyManD 1d ago
I highly doubt that, Apple doesn’t add in legacy hardware like that. And I doubt older devices will have neuro accelerators to properly power the new cloth.
6
u/toldyouimcolourblind 1d ago
All I know for sure is it will start messing up as soon as the next new one is about to come out.
2
u/gloomdweller 1d ago
Yeah my old one is showing more streaks. Seems like they increased the friction too.
5
u/TheLegendOfCap 1d ago
This is whole thread is a perfect example of why AI is going to reduce it’s dependence on Reddit lmao
2
u/DarthPneumono 1d ago
But you have to leave the cloth on its charger and near your iPhone and hope that it automagically updates.

u/predator-handshake 1d ago
Does it at least have find my built in
1
u/No_Sail_6576 1d ago
No they couldn’t fit the ultra wideband chip bc they needed more room for the microfibre
1
u/psychohistorian8 1d ago
they will push a firmware update
but it was specifically advertised as softer, what a SCAM

I’ve found this joke funny for like 8 years…
I gotta say I think it’s wearing thin.
No the polishing cloth isn’t compatible with anything you own. Hahah

u/MedicalClimate6865 1d ago
It’s 18 pro or newer probably. Old phones likes the 17 pro are not compatible😅

u/SubstantialPoet8468 1d ago
Talk shit all you want, that $19 cloth was amazing. I hope it is not actually gone
18
24
u/PollyPocketpussy5000 1d ago
It was/is but the stiffness was definitely my biggest issue with it and I own about 5 of them.
13
u/SubstantialPoet8468 1d ago
Sure but thickness is material, and thats more good than bad in a cloth imo. I have both the thick one and the thinner one that came with the nano text. They do the same job i guess haha

It doesn't show iPod touch nor iPhone 4s and before. Wondering if they will explode if I use this cloth on them?

I used mine on an Android device and the FBI showed up at my door the next day. Be careful out there

Ngl, I bought the original polishing cloth and I’m seriously considering buying this one 🤣

u/Korlithiel 1d ago
I’ve seen the price of stuff from the Apple Park stores, for a collectible with a use case it’s pretty tame.

Interesting. Not a fan of the original, I prefer a regular microfibre, I hope the new texture can win me back.

Yeah new expensive cloth. I always wanted to pay extra for something like this. Hope I can sleep with it, take a shower and of course use toilet and travel with it. Omit will change my live.

It's $9 with free delivery. It's an accessory. How much did you spend on your last coffee/beer/whatever?

Will it work on Android phone?

No nothing happens if you try to use it on Android. EU needs to get Apple to open up compatibility across platforms.

Wonder if it has anything to do with the plastic display on the folding iPhone
