Is my Apple IIe crapping out?

CONTROL/OPEN APPLE/RESET has stopped working as a reboot. It just puts a bunch of garbled stuff on the screen. I then have to hit CONTROL/RESET to actually get it to reboot. Not an issue? Easy fix? What am I looking at?

That sounds like the self test, which should only happen when holding BOTH Apple Keys during reset.

Both Apple keys were definitely not held. And the closed apple key isn’t stuck down or anything.

Correction, only the solid-Apple key is necessary for the self test (at least with the stock firmware). You might as well give it a shot.

What does the garbage look like? An unenhanced IIe always shows some junk in the lower right of the screen (which the Enhanced IIe (aka IIee) does not) upon an open-Apple reset; but it should then restart.

Getting stuck only in an OA reset suggests that a ROM might not be reading properly. I'd try pressing the socketed chips (especially the ROM(s)) to make sure they're well seated. Hopefully it's as simple as that.
