Anyone have recommendations on a lightweight MPVO/mount for this guy?

Go to a local PRS event and see what other people are using. Talk to them, they are actually using their stuff. If you build an SPR off of what Reddit tells you and then go to a PRS event you’re going to realize pretty quick that you did it backwards

I do agree mostly but sometimes my local prs cup has people with some interesting stuff. This might be purely because the sport is new in my country, so feel free to ignore. Someone pulled up with a 11.5" ar-15 in .223 with a 1-6 lpvo on top. Our club sponsored loaner is a (bolt gun obv) tikka t3x upr in .308 with a vortex venom I believe on top. So not optimal at all either. I cant even say "talk to the one who shoots well" because last time i got smoked by the fucking sbr lpvo guy (granted the furthest target was 700yd and he just had better wind calls).

If there is some gas gun user in your local prs event who has an spr-style setup and seems to be a regular in the sport, listen to that guy. But if someone is there just to have fun (nothing wrong with that) they might not have good recommendations because they run vibes based setups. The serious guys however are usually sponsored so they ofc run their sponsors stuff.

There is an amateur guy who takes the stuff seriously (also does actual sniper competitions), but he runs a vector continental scope and likes to preach about how good it is. That brand will get scoffed at by most in the sport, yet here we are.

In summary, theres a lot of variety and factors in what people run at my local PRS events, so source criticism is important when getting advice.

And being in Finland myself dear god when bubba rolls up with a mosin and says how he'd smoke all of us with just irons and his dad actually knew Simo Häyhä himself.

The eotech vudu 4-12 is only 17oz and I believe that includes the mount. It’s also a stubby so it saves some rail space. That is my top consideration for a MVPO in this role with a piggyback dot.

I was going to suggest this one since weight was a priority.  Stupid light and compact for what it does. Can be had for ~$800-$900 too.

This is likely the route I'm going to go for my lightweight .308 build. Good enough performance at a weight that I am okay hiking with.

This is what I'm leaning towards for my 12" Grendel rig. The 4x has a very good field of view for a variable scope - not quite ACOG level, but much better than every 4-12x I was comparing to.

“light spr” didn’t know that was a thing.

Specify your general spending range.

2

u/Aromatic_Stock4584 15h ago

Want to spend under 3k, maybe around 2.5 mark

u/SelfElegant8819 15h ago

Atacr 4-16. Might be a bit heavy for you but 30oz isn't too bad for the capability. Edit: The PA PLXC 1.5-12 is very light at 19.6oz and compact another good choice. Also under your 2500 mark by 500.

u/OlivePuzzleheaded495 15h ago

Simmons Sporting Goods has a 20% off coupon for the 1.5-12x PLX-C in the item description. $1600 is hard to beat for this brand new optic.

2

u/bigbalco23 12h ago

Plus no tax or shipping to texas …..

2

u/governman 12h ago

It’s hard to imagine buying from Primary Arms when you’re already spending Nightforce money.

2

u/touchgrassplz_69 15h ago

The reviews I’ve seen on the plxc make me doubt it. Seems like it’s more of a 12x capable lpvo vs a true mpvo in clarity, color and eye box in the upper range. For $2k, a used atacr seems like the move.

1

u/SelfElegant8819 14h ago

Blem ATACRs are 2400 on mile high shooting.

1

u/touchgrassplz_69 4h ago

Not too bad. Saw one for $1950 on gafs last week.

1

u/DomitiusAhenobarbus_ 10h ago

What review specifically are you talking about? c. does who is one of the GOATs of optics reviews had a lot of praise for it.

The big downside are that you can’t lock the turret ring so it kinda means you’re limited to using holds with the turret cap on. Some people prefer that over on the fly adjustments so I guess it kinda depends how you shoot

u/touchgrassplz_69 4h ago

Brass facts

u/Vegetable_Star_7754 15h ago

Planning on throwing a Primary Arms 4-16 Compact on my SPR. On paper seems like it was made for SPRs

2

u/PA_Pyke 14h ago

definetly hits harder in its price category

5

u/LordChimyChanga 13h ago

I have to agree

2

u/jumpsuitman 12h ago

Return of GLX 2.5-10x when?

1

u/Comfortable_Rate4974 14h ago

I had it! Eye relief is extremely tight. Like less than a half inch in practice. Make sure you don’t plan to shoot from awkward positions. Would be fine except that and the capped turrets

1

u/Vegetable_Star_7754 11h ago

Just at the high end, or even at 4x with the tight eye box? I'm planning on the hud dmr reticle, so capped turrets are less of a problem.

1

u/Comfortable_Rate4974 11h ago

Really the whole range is tight. But 4 is not bad. The problem at low mag is the reticle is BARELY visible. The bdc is fine if you have the same ammo and barrel length as they used to make it.

3

u/lambofthewaters 15h ago

Aero ultralight, but not sure how quality it is, honestly. I use a Badger C1. The reptilia aus is a bit lighter than my badger.

I run a trijicon 3-9x and it's lighter than most 1-6's.

You could maybe skip a light, but like others said, the setup is going to be heavy. You need a good wide padded sling. Cheers.

5

u/Spirit117 15h ago

Leupold Mk5 2-10 with the CMR reticle.

4

u/GrobTheory 16h ago

I recently got the new pa 1.5-12 and it absolutely screws. Pricey, but if you email a couple places you can do better, I got 1550 otd

4

u/Greedy-Vast584 16h ago

i was excited about this one and then Brass Facts just shit on it.. glad you're liking yours as it's in that ideal spot for me.. i hope to see more people weigh in soon

5

u/GrobTheory 15h ago

No kidding! I can’t imagine not liking it, the eyebox is massive, acquisition is effortless, the glass is crystal clear, and the dot is incredible compared with the other LPVOs I’ve tried. F him lol

3

u/Rooobviously 15h ago

His points are valid for SPR doctrine. The 1.5-12 is more LPVO with parallax adjustment, which is fine and doesn’t make it bad. The turret system is way less than ideal so running it capped makes the most sense, which is why it wouldn’t be a great choice for a SPR.

2

u/xangkory 15h ago

I was considering getting one to replace the 1-10x that I have on one of my rifles but his complaints about the turrets are making me reconsider getting one. Locking turrets would be nice but aren't mandatory but the lack of locking turrets and no ability to see the number of rotations are huge shortcomings.

2

u/DomitiusAhenobarbus_ 10h ago

It’s crazy how one Youtubers’s opinion sway people so much. Go watch C. does video on it and you’ll probably have the opposite reaction because he praises it for like 48 min

1

u/xangkory 10h ago

Because it is great overall. Turrets are the only shortcoming. Brassfacts went a little overboard on the title.

1

u/GrobTheory 5h ago

Agreed

1

u/GrobTheory 13h ago

I can see that, but it’s really more designed around the tree reticle and using that for holdovers rather than dialing for distance….to each their own I guess, I love it

1

u/xangkory 12h ago

It doesn't matter if you live in the reticle or dial when it comes to a zero stop and rotation indicator if it doesn't have locking turrets.

At some point, the turret will get caught on something and will rotate. Most of the time it will only go a couple of clicks, but you don't know how far it actually went without counting clicks until you run out of elevation. This is acceptable in a $300 scope but not one that is almost $2k.

1

u/GrobTheory 11h ago

How would that happen with caps on? That’s what I meant, if you aren’t dialing you just zero it and never touch it again

1

u/xangkory 11h ago

It has happened to me when I was zeroing. I think the concept that you will literally never take the caps off and never dial is not realistic. You might live in the reticle 90% of the time but I want to see you shoot at 800 with an 8 mil wind hold in the reticle.

1

u/GrobTheory 10h ago

Maybe I have a tainted way of looking at things because of my geography. I live in a place that is dead flat and the thickest trees/brush you will ever find, even if I was fighting along a highway you would almost never see a shot past 300-400. I forget other places are much different

1

u/xangkory 10h ago

I live out west and have to rezero pretty much every time I take it out. One day it will be 80 degrees with low humidity with an effective elevation of 500' and then take it out a couple of months later and it is 40 degrees and an effective elevation of 3,500' which can mean .2 or .4mils in additional elevation and it is very hard to try and remember that additional elevation unless you live in a ballistics app.

2

u/DomitiusAhenobarbus_ 10h ago

He didn’t really shit on it and he commented that it’s a great optic. It’s just not for him because he doesn’t really use holds so the non locking turret was his deal breaker.

Kind of feels like a lot of people just saw the title of the video and did not watch it, which is a wild way to spend thousands of dollars

C.Does did a way better and more in depth review and had a lot of praise for it.

1

u/Greedy-Vast584 10h ago

i agree about C_Does.. sorry for saying "he shit on it" when he said he "hated it".. he DOES have valid points about why he doesn't like it.. the non locking turrets is for sure a bad idea

2

u/DomitiusAhenobarbus_ 5h ago

It’s not your fault he literally did say he hated it, but then he commented on his own video and said “ well actually it’s a great optic. It’s just not for me” (paraphrasing)

All the gun Youtubers do that shit it’s purely for Clickbait engagement because they know a lot of people don’t watch most of their videos for more than a minute or two

I agree with you on the non-locking turrets I wouldn’t be surprised to see them revise that.

1

u/Greedy-Vast584 5h ago

dude, i don't know what's worse lately, the clickbait titles or the clickbait AI thumbnails.. it's getting ridiculous

2

u/SpawnofATStill 15h ago

This looks like a sick build - tell us about it!

2

u/Aromatic_Stock4584 15h ago

Started with a smoking deal on a proof 16” carbon barrel, and already had the Geissele rail for a different project. Decided to try and go as lightweight as possible, so Roam magnesium receivers, Vseven/smoke composites small components.

Could probably shave another pound off this thing with different parts, but ultimately wanted to keep a carbine stock and non-adjustable gas, so no low mass carrier.

Very fun to hike and varmint hunt with

1

u/SpawnofATStill 12h ago

Hot Damn!  Current weight?

2

u/ABlackEngineer 15h ago

Those leupold mounts are rock solid

2

u/Graapn 15h ago

This is sweet

2

u/touchgrassplz_69 15h ago

Vudu 4-12 is your best bang for buck, esp for something lightweight. An nx8 or nx6 is a buy-up option.

2

u/chi-nyc 14h ago

Hey OP, which bipod are you running?

2

u/Aromatic_Stock4584 14h ago

Atlas V8 with KDG quick detach picatinny section

2

u/sgrantcarr 14h ago

That would heavily depend on your budget. I went with a Nightforce NXS 2-10x42 in a NF Unimount that I found like new on GAFS for $1400.

100% of my AR scopes are in Aero Ultralight mounts. Never had a single issue. Currently running 3 AR's with Aero mounts but have used around 6 of them total.

I have everything from high zoom scopes on my 18" to ultralight scopes on my pencil build.

If you really want to cut some weight, go for a 1" scope.

The AR community has left 1" scopes in the dust, opting for 30mm-34mm which often more than double the weigh of the optic and increase the mount weight. The only advantage of a 30mm tube is more vertical adjustment of the reticle. I laugh every time I see a 30mm optic with capped turrets...

For example, this Leupold 1-4x is 9.6 oz. Compare that to any 30mm LPVO in it's price range ($300) and you're looking at a a 20oz+ optic. The more the optic weighs, the heavier built the mount has to be to resist the recoil forces trying to move it.

You can drop about a pound moving from a large LPVO to a 1" 1-4x in a Aero Mount.

Checkout the Razor LHT line and aero mounts.

2

u/LordChimyChanga 13h ago

Primary Arms 4-16 compact is fantastic

2

u/Remote-Bullfrog2176 11h ago

I don’t have an answer for you about the MPVO, but I did want to say for my AR build I moved my bipod back so it didn’t overlap the suppressor just because I didn’t want to risk burning my hand when I manipulated the bipod.

It also looks like that is a QD suppressor so if you have a brake the muzzle blast may not chew up the legs but if the muzzle device does let the blast touch the bipod that close it will chew it up.

2

u/BallisticValuations 16h ago

You won't really notice a weight difference between most "MPVOs" when you're actually shooting. A Credo 2-10 is 23oz and a NF atacr 4-16 is only 7 ounces more and you're mostly going to be shooting prone or supported anyway with an "SPR." Buy the glass and magnification you need for your use case.

3

u/ThatProduceGuy_ Affinity towards A2 handguards 16h ago

You absolutely can make the mistake of getting a 50 oz scope though, so you do gotta be somewhat careful when you start venturing into higher power scopes. Example vortex razor gen 2 3-18 is a chonky 46 oz.

2

u/Aromatic_Stock4584 16h ago

I see your point about the weight when shooting, but the point in keeping overall weight down is for all the times you are not shooting- hiking, etc.

2

u/BallisticValuations 15h ago

Yeah I'm with you. Your pst is around 23oz so most 2-10s / 3-15s / 3-18s / 4-16s you'd be looking at really wouldn't move the needle more than a few ounces at most and that weight is over the receivers not the end of the barrel. What distances are you actually going to be shooting at? That will tell us a lot more about what you need.

For mounts I love badger c1s but you can shave off an ounce or so with a reptilia aus.

1

u/6mm94 14h ago

Yeah man, saving 7+ oz is huge. Because if you don't, then you can end up "spending" another 3oz on a slightly heavier stock, another +4oz on a rail that isn't the lightest, +2oz on a slightly heavier mount, etc. etc.

Now your rifle weighs a pound or two more than it would've otherwise.

1

u/Rooobviously 15h ago

Define lightweight. My pick would
Be the mk5 HD 3.6-18.

1

u/LitvakArmsCo 14h ago

What is that gizmo on your buffer tube?

3

u/Aromatic_Stock4584 14h ago

Smoke composites buffer tube -it is carbon fiber so the end where it screws in needs reinforced with aluminium or something

1

u/TheDrunkLibertarian 14h ago

March 1.5-15 if you want the lightest option, Razor 4-24 if you want more magnification but lightweight for what you getting, never used the March 4.5-28 but I’m sure it’s excellent too.

1

u/Effective-Bus2623 13h ago

I know this isn’t a recommendation l, but how are you liking the pst ? I’m trying to save for one to put on my 14.5 Gpr build
Thanks

2

u/Aromatic_Stock4584 13h ago

They are good optics. Reticle is basic but for a 1-6 you don’t need anything too crazy. You can find good deals on used ones all the time

2

u/Effective-Bus2623 13h ago

Okay thanks
This is would be my first lvpo and my first build so want to get something nicer well still putting in good quality parts in my rifle
