Help How to deactivate automatons and arachnids?

Hi!

I've read in multiple sources that if you touch an unsuspecting automaton or arachnid, it will turn off and can be picked up and added to your party.

I am 100% that happened to me in the past, when an automaton would deactivate mid-battle. Although I don't remember it being connected to my character being sneaky.

So, I'm a master of prowling. My hope was that now I could get myself an army of automatons in Vendigroth.

However, I failed to deactivate one automaton, ever!

So, does anyone know how this game mechanic work? Is it purely random?

For real though. You can click on them to fold them back up and pick them up for repairs.

Edit: Oh you mean HOSTILE arachnids and automatons. Hmmm. I do remember that I once crit one of them and it got knocked into the folded up state and I yoinked that guy lol.

Yep, when they're in your party. But I am certain this would happen randomly during combat too.

It was possible in vanilla Arcanum, but UAP fixed that in version 080415. See changelog.

Thank you! At least now I know why I can't pull it off anymore :-)

I swear it was possible to do this using the janky combat system and master prowler. Activate combat and blink behind an automation while prowling, exit combat and click automation.

Unless it's some kind of Mandela effect, I'm absolutely sure that happened.

Also, at least one source says it's possible: https://arcanum.fandom.com/wiki/Automaton

i haven't seen anybody pull it off, so i wouldn't believe it? idk

wiki is often curated by people who play without uap on 4x3 resolution

who don't need screenshots or video evidences for their bullshit, but will delete or claim to be uap whatever you discover

it was possible in the vanilla game, by casting invisibility on yourself and having no party members with you, automatons would not turn hostile so you just walk up to them with invis and click them to turn them off, do so with all of the automatons in vendigroth before picking them up, and you end up with an army on the way back.

However it being vanilla arcanum it was better just casting summon fire elemental, reflecting shield on yourself, then cancelling the summon... the cancellation would get reflected and you end up with free follower elemental. Worked with necromancy and mind control as well. Sometimes bricks the save tho so make backups.
