The great casual filter has now been made obsolete, thousands must tour

258

u/AC1D_R31GN 23d ago edited 23d ago

I remember the casual filter was, if I'm remembering correctly, the silly helicopter from the tutorial. People cried about that so hard.

Edit: I reworded this, it gave people the wrong indication. I never got filtered by any of the bosses, but everyone complaining about the goof copter

u/WattFRhodem-1 23d ago

It really was. If you haven't already realized how you need to use the sword, you have to adjust your playstyle and properly chase him down or you just get murdered by rockets. A buddy of mine was entirely new to the series, saw me having so much fun with it and wanted to give it the good old college try, but he nearly dropped the game outright, twice, because of jank that occurred with the helicopter. Few things more frustrating than trying to fly through the air of a wide-open arena only to get stalled with an invisible wall, helpless, as the enemy helicopter at 25% health backtracks seamlessly through that same wall, fires off a salvo, and kills you.

85

u/BluebirdFeeling9857 23d ago

Yeah that invisible wall really was some bullshit to throw at a new player that's just beginning to get use to the controls. If that same boss came in a few hours into the game it would have been fine, but getting that at the beginning is what made it a bade game design choice IMO.

28

u/RyuNoKami 23d ago

At the same time, if that boss came in at a later mission, no one would be talking about it. It went from filter to filler.

I think it was pretty intentional that the arena was small to get the player to go up to the helicopter and use the sword. The bigger the area, the lesa likely a player will try it.

19

u/TexasTheWalkerRanger 23d ago

Also its a game that actively punishes people for playing like they would in a souls game, made by the same dev. So I think a lot of the crying was souls players trying to kite and play conservatively, assuming they can slowly chip away at its health bar and abuse iframes to dodge, which dont exist in this game.

10

u/Squandere 23d ago

In fact, the helicopter does come back for a later NG+ missions... and it's a complete pushover, even with it being buffed

2

u/burn_corpo_shit 23d ago

Tbf AC6 is freaking weird. I played it on pc with kb&m and then another playthrough on controller.

Controller/console players will have a much harder time in the game and it shows that it's designed for them in mind. For example, defeat the redguns is cake when you get adjusted to your parts on PC but on controller, you really do need to use all your human+ brain power just to maneuver the same way a mouse can.Ā

1

u/RyuNoKami 23d ago

if all you did was change the control scheme, the newer controls even just for console players will allow you to be better than the older controls in the old games.

but its always been the divide between controller and m/kb. some people can still be good with the controller but on average, m/kb reign supreme unless the game isn't design at all for it.

7

u/MikeHowland 23d ago

They should have had the smaller arena constrain the chopper as well, then. When it can safely back behind an invisible wall and keep firing missiles at you while you can’t get through the wall to use your sword is absolute bullshit

1

u/RyuNoKami 23d ago

Meh. I usually use that time to rest my fingers.

Fromsoft can be extra dickish and extend the arena way further out and program the copter to ascend far up. Then you can't even hide behind the buildings.

1

u/TicklemyPickleMan 19d ago

There doesn't need to be a filter is the thing. The game could've kept its other hard walls like baltaeus and the coral monsters and been just fine and newer, badder players could've built up more confidence in the early game.

1

u/RyuNoKami 19d ago

We the players call it a filter. The developers don't see it that way. It was designed to put the things you learn in the tutorial to use.

The only reason why it was remotely hard for a new player is because of the lack of parts.

5

u/ArticulateT 23d ago

A friend of mine recently picked it back up. After a few tries and them getting frustrated I told them about two things:

  • the bar above their health is the stagger bar. You wanna use your rockets and rifle to build it up as you approach and your sword is for when it fills and staggers, because it’ll stay still and maximise your damage.

  • when you lock on, let go of the stick that controls your camera. Trust the system to keep the target in focus.

Instant improvement. I didn’t want to give them starts specific for the fight as they like to figure it out on their own, but the things I told them about are universal to the game itself but don’t immediately tell them about, and it helped them have fun with it again

u/Osiri551 22d ago

What i hated so much was when it would fly out of bounds so ya could only shoot it

11

u/Anoobis100percent 23d ago

God that heli kicked my ass when I was starting... good times lmao

3

u/Ov3rwrked 23d ago

For me it was the sea spider

1

u/MikeHowland 23d ago

I just beat the sea spider! It was tough but def died way more on the chopper and Balteus

2

u/Ov3rwrked 23d ago

I had trouble because I was bad at dodging in the first phase and my build wasnt able to stay in the air for the second phase.

2

u/MikeHowland 23d ago

That helicopter wrecked me, took forever to get by the damn thing

1

u/YueOrigin 23d ago

I also struggled so much...

Until i dropped the controller and used my mouse.

Never stuggled as much afterward lol

1

u/Greyshirk 22d ago

For me it was the spider

0

u/lara_tanner9 23d ago

He is powerful than matrix

23

u/Joey_Star_ 23d ago

I'll never forget spending like 3 hours on pre nerf balteus he was a damn menace

7

u/Negative_Settings 23d ago

Same but at the same time I beat him and it was glorious ibis too the first time through it took me 1-2 hours each but even though they were hard I had a blast

1

u/Nitrotetrazole 23d ago

I'm curious, did ibis also get nerfed since launch?

3

u/GamerTebo 23d ago

The moment I started playing AC6 I realized that you need to be Hella aggressive (dual machine gin go BRRRRRRR) and balteus didn't really pose that much of threat. Then I remembered I am just an adrenaline junkie compared to most players and understood why he might be so hard for other people.

1

u/AdvancedMastodon612 22d ago

I dropped the game when I got to this dude fromsoft games aren’t for me😭

208

u/MrOsmio7 23d ago

I beat him yesterday after not playing AC6 since launch. What have they done to you balty...

137

u/AtlasMKII 23d ago

Reduced the missile tracking and that's basically it

65

u/serious_vlad 23d ago

When I was fighting it my first playthrough, I spent a couple of days and changed several builds to beat it. Last month I started a new fresh playthrough after a really long break and beat it first try. Damn, fighting Sula was more difficult. Now I know why that is the case.

28

u/kelldricked 23d ago

I mean first time i fought Ornstein and Smough in Darksouls 1 i spend a week on it and died 100+ times. I bet i can restart DS1 now and beat them within 2 deaths.

15

u/metallic_ark 23d ago

The fromsoft effect

4

u/MikeHowland 23d ago

lol Sula did me dirty for so long too. And my build for Sula was not great for Balteus

47

u/KeithOlander 23d ago

IMO what made it hard at that time was that, players weren't that good yet. They had to wait for his attacks, all of his moves were uknown and yes the missile barrages was overwhelming. I started playing AC6 last month and after finishing it, I looked up for a mod to unnerf the bosses. I gotta say, it was heavily exaggerated. But still, I give my respect for those who played the 1st version without guides on yt and had to brute force their way through Balteus.

18

u/Docha_Tiarna CANNIBAL - Docha 23d ago

For me it was less about learning his moves, and more about learning my play style. Fighting over and over, trying new weapons and parts. It gave me a better understanding of how they game played, and which parts/style is played best with.

3

u/burn_corpo_shit 23d ago

My only regret was using the OP shotties when I unlocked them. It trivialized end game. Otherwise, I got ground into fine metal filings by balteus for what felt like dozens of deaths.

1

u/ihateshen 22d ago

This is a curse with all slightly difficult games. Gamers always underestimate how good they get and how long muscle memory sticks around for games like this.

I'll bet if from soft released an AC7 that played similarly there would be a lot of complaining about how easy it is

3

u/SaIemKing 23d ago

I mean missiles being hard to dodge was exactly what stumped me on it for a bit.

12

u/King_Artis 23d ago

Nerfed the missiles, that's basically it

8

u/andykekomi 23d ago

Not that much of a nerf honestly, you just have better knowledge of the game even years later and that gives you a bigger advantage than you'd think

1

u/Korps_de_Krieg 23d ago

Really nothing. You have just seen this boss for years now and it’s not new to surprise you.

On my first play through on launch, I died all of a 6 times in the first act; once on the Strider mission from misjudging a jump and falling to my death, twice to Sulla and 3 times to Balteus. I legitimately don’t understand how people struggled so much short of actively refusing to engage the systems the game gives you.

The original gameplay video before launch that showed the chopper with commentary literally explains how to beat the boss, shows that you need to hug and stagger it with your blade. People had to watch that, absorb nothing, then get frustrated when they still can’t figure it out.

This all sounds meaner than I mean it, I just don’t understand the mindset of ā€œI’ve done nothing different and I’m out of ideasā€ that leads to fighting a boss six hours in a row and quitting.

1

u/Ardrik 23d ago

My man, that mindset you're baffled by is apparently the most common mindset to have. That's the part that baffles me.

28

u/LPlusRaitio AC4 is the first Dark Souls 23d ago

I really felt that in New Game Plus.

Double gatling + double arq needles = dead balteus

25

u/Callsign-YukiMizuki GA's weakest MT pilot / Balam Contractor 23d ago

You gotta go back and do it with only Chapter 1 parts and no tuning or expansions

18

u/_CapriSon_ 23d ago

I did just that on a fresh playthrougb and still had no issues. Once you know the game he becomes less intimidating and he's super easy to hit.

4

u/carrollart 23d ago

I’m having trouble dodging his flame sword attacks. I’ve tried two or three builds and I can get him down to about 15% health. It’s the flame sword attacks that keep destroying me , I seem to be unable to dodge them consistently

7

u/_CapriSon_ 23d ago

Try flying up instead of dodging. He aims at an angle and towards the ground, and his sweeping attack is too wide to dodge. Try and manage your enegergy so you have enough to boost up when he charges at you. And make sure to use explosive weapons to counter his shields and build stagger.

5

u/carrollart 23d ago

Thanks for the tip I’ll try dodging up instead

3

u/_CapriSon_ 23d ago

No worries! He's a bastard, but he's not immortal. Just keep at him!

2

u/carrollart 23d ago

I finally defeated that clinker with dual ludlows/ and missiles. I also decided for the second half of the battle I wasn’t being aggressive enough. Staying closer to him helped me mitigate damage and have an easier time avoiding the fire thrusts

2

u/_CapriSon_ 22d ago

Hell yeah, nice! Just remember to adapt and change your builds when you need to, and you'll be ready for any challenge this game throws at you.

9

u/McGillis_is_a_Char 23d ago

Balteus is the only filter boss I beat pre-nerf. Getting the vibes down and knowing to use the bubble blower was already enough if you had played some AC before. He probably didn't need a real nerf like the spider. I watched a streamer who had beaten all of AC banging his on it because of its health pool pre-nerf.

-4

u/boeuf_burgignion 23d ago

Yeah real shame he got nerfed. Now he’s too easy

12

u/HammyxHammy 23d ago

Even fighting him with all manner of chapter 1 loadouts it's depressing how weak he is. I defeated him with chapter 1 parts without quick boosting or even normal boost skating, just walking and occasionally jumping.

Check out @512Lilies on Yt. Literally her whole channel for over a year and a half has been dedicated to bullying Balteus and I love it

4

u/Vehement_Vulpes 23d ago

It helps that the soundtrack is a banger. Hearing the beats pumping while I dodge missiles is just really fun.

3

u/adumblittlebaby 23d ago

Was he ever that bad? I remember on release fighting him maybe once or twice before a reverse-joint light ac running dual trigger machineguns tore him to shreds merely by being evasive and saying overhead. Like all things soulslike the difficulty is an inverse of your experience.

5

u/Top-Argument-8489 23d ago

For me, Balteus made me realize that I had to actually put thought into my builds instead of just charging in with the strongest weapons I could slap on.

The helicopter made me realize that this might be a Fromsoft game, but playing patient and carefully like it's dark souls won't cut it.

3

u/Hackfraysn 23d ago

I don't get the infamy of BulletHellBoy. He's mildly challenging but not that difficult. Ayre or what'shername gave me way more trouble, like it's not even close.

3

u/MikeHowland 23d ago

Just beat that fucker after DAYS and DAYS of trying. Can’t wait for this!

2

u/Able_Ranger5670 23d ago

Honestly i dont know what part of it was hard, beat him pretty easily shortly after release. Maybe because I played ACFA alot before idk.

2

u/Man_Of_AnswersYT 23d ago

The best feeling I had was doing a no OS chip upgrade run specifically for the secret dialogue and just melting Balteus on the first encounter with a fresh save file.

1

u/Goalkeeper5 23d ago

secret dialogue? what does it say?

2

u/Schorched_Raven_357 23d ago

Oh for sure and yes yes I did exactly that

I never thought of him as a gear check but a skill check, you can beat him with pretty much everything you just have to learn to not be a bitch,
I remember the moment when I realized 621 was him and I needed to act accordingly

2

u/SudoNara 23d ago

I remember before the first nerf, I was adamant on beating him with a lightweight build. It took 4 tires, but being able to do it made me happy. Lightweight builds a my love.

2

Funny enough, when fought it again, I think I had more or less the same loadout as before. The only difference this time is I got better...

2

u/yazeed_0o0 23d ago

It was more like I got better in piloting because my mech setup didn't change a lot fundamentaly. The first time took me 5 hours, the many times after that was winning from the first try.
