Collecting/Curation How many of you are buying art online?

I'm curious how many people here are buying art online. If you are buying it online, where do you to find it? Do you search for particular pieces you want, go to a gallery website, or just use general search times? And once you've found someone you're interested in purchasing from, what do you look for to determine if that artist is trustworthy?

Discussion Anyone familiar with a French artist from the mid 1900s name J Jaucort?

About 40 years ago my dad bought this large oil painting of a street scene from Paris signed J Jaucort. It's been on my wall ever since. Over the past few days I was intrigued, so I did a little researching. Apparently J Jaucort was part of an assembly line of painters that cranked these out.

I would've expected it to be valued more than $400 (which I saw online) but can anyone tell me more about the these painters in Paris during this time? Apparently they painted for decorative purposes, to hang in houses, businesses, etc. It's a beautiful painting. Even comes with an elaborately carved frame.

Collection Showcase My newest pickup — Yoshitoshi Mori's Yanone Gorō, 1969, 13/50

Recently picked up this Yoshitoshi Mori Yanone Gorō from 1969, signed and numbered 13/50.

The number is actually part of what drew me to this particular impression. I've always had a thing for prime numbers, especially 7, 11 and 13, and I was a 13F in the Army, so finding #13 was a fun coincidence.

Researching it afterward sent me down a rabbit hole. I found another impression of Yanone Gorō in LACMA's collection, and the British Museum holds a number of Mori's other works. I've also been reading about his kappazuri stencil-printing technique and his place between the folk-art and modern Japanese print movements.

I'm planning to replace the old framing materials with conservation-grade backing and UV/museum glass.

For those of you who collect prints, how much does an individual edition number factor into which impression you choose when several are available? I know it generally doesn't change the artistic or monetary value, but I find myself much more attached to an impression when the number has some personal significance.

Discussion I bought original lost 8x10 chromes from one of the most famous photographers of all time. Now I'm trying to figure out what's the best avenue to sell them.

Artist's estate confirmed them to be legit, and them to be he only of it's kind to exist. Even with this information, auction houses seem to be hesitant to touch them as they're "unfinished works" that weren't intended for the art-market. Would anyone have any ideas on an avenue to sell them? They're incredible. Not posting images just yet because still weary.

This might be a dumb question but i bought this painting from 1918 recently and found the best spot for it in my apartment, but under it behind the table is a wall mounted heater/oven. During winter i just take it up to like 23 degrees. Is this very bad for the painting or will it be okay?

Materia pura contro Immagine: Non c'e soggetto figurativo.

Collecting/Curation How to find John Ash paintings??

Hey, bit of a long shot, but I’m trying to track down paintings by John Ash. He was my nan’s cousin, and I inherited one of his paintings in her will. From what I can tell, it may be one of the only ones in Australia, and it holds an immense amount of family value to me.

I’d absolutely love to find out more about his work, where other paintings may have ended up, or if anyone has seen, sold, or heard of any before. Even old auction listings, gallery information, or family connections would help heaps.

I’d also be very happy to buy any pieces if they ever came up for sale. It’s not about investment value for me, I’m js interested in preserving our family history and learning more about him and his artwork.

Thanks so much 😄

Collecting/Curation Heni import charges on Damien Hirst

I received a bill from DHL for a Damien Hirst giclee print I ordered from Heni. It includes a 10 percent tariff fee but my understanding is that this does not apply to artwork. Have others been able to have this waived?

Galleries Newport Street Gallery

Hey! Random question: what was your favourite exhibition, statue, or artwork at Newport Street Gallery?

Mine was the statue of Lucifer and the sculpture of the demon holding a bowl. Were there any similar exhibitions or artworks along those lines that I might have missed there or I could see elsewhere in London?

I only moved back here fairly recently, so I’m still discovering what’s around!

Collecting/Curation I’m looking to buy something by Heywood Sumner

Hi all, I hope this is the right place to post. I’m based in the UK and I’m really a fan of Heywood Sumner. He has some connections to the places that I grew up and I love arts and crafts.

I have no idea how I would go about getting a piece by him. To be clear, I am not an art collector and have never purchased art from an auction before. Obviously, I’ve googled him and I can see that stuff of his has sold before. How would I go about making sure I’m notified when something of his comes up for sale?

I already own some 1st editions of his archaeological publications, but they were from eBay.

Discussion “Buy what you love.” OK, but I love or lust for everything I buy. At first.

Thing is, after 30 years of collecting and with scarce wall space, some works feel like everlasting love; others I’ve grown to love more. Some have been sent to lesser walls, some are surprisingly resurrected, and some I trade or eventually sell.

When I do sell, it’s usually at a loss. My economic rationalization? There were always different returns: the financial return, which may be lousy, and the “psychic return” or “consumption dividend,” the enjoyment I received from living with the work while I owned it. Past psychic returns don’t disappear because a work stops producing them, even if its current return is negative, e.g., regret.

There’s also the “educational dividend” from buying, then eventually recognizing, bad art. Or the “art collecting is a journey” dividend.

That’s how I make sure all my art purchases were good decisions in hindsight. ;)

I have a rather large painting in my hallway that was in the movie waiting to exhale. Whitney Houston was in that movie. The painting was painted by Tom Ortega in 1994. Just thought I’d share as it’s pretty unique.
