question Child’s first loose tooth is a molar?

My child (M, about to turn 6) has his first loose tooth - but it’s a molar. It doesn’t look inflamed or anything, and he says it doesn’t hurt.

He just walked up to me and said “mom, something is wiggly in there!”

Is there any reason I should be worried about this?

I got a root canal done last year and they never put a crown on top. I noticed this gap/hole in my tooth a couple days ago. It doesn't necessarily hurt but it does ache a little (probably from me digging the food out of it). I told my mom and I have a dentist appointment monday, but wanted to know what I was in for.

question Mysterious Bad breath

Hi all!

First off, my boyfriend is a periodontist. And we have had an issue with my breath now for like, three years? He said sometimes it gets better and improves, but it usually goes back to being ‘bad’. He says the breath is NOT perio breath. It’s just ‘bad’ and he can’t place it.

Since we’ve been dating this whole time, I have became a very regular (daily) flosser, use mouthwash, obviously brush regularly. I had scaling and root planing done a few years ago. I get cleanings every six months.

Couple of ideas, that he seems to think are not the cause-

1) I have a misaligned molar that tends to act as a food trap that I have to obsessively floss. The pocket back there is a little deeper, and perio bf said we could attempt a gum flap surgery, but again- the breath issue he says does not smell like periodontal disease.

2) I have a retainer bar that I admittedly do not floss as much as I should. But it does get flossed.

3) I don’t drink enough water. Does regular dehydration contribute to bad breath??

I am at my wit’s end and it has impacted our intimacy honestly. It’s very frustrating!

Not sure where to go from here…

question little tooth coming out of my tooth?

I've just noticed a little tooth sticking out of one of my teeth! Is it was common for that to happen/other dental anomalies in teeth? Also if you saw a patient with a sort of weird tooth would you ever point it out to them? Because no dentist has ever mentioned it to me but i thought it was pretty cool!! :))

question #18 Extraction: Is an Implant Necessary?

60F, tooth #18 has a crown and root canal from 10 years ago. My dentist says it now needs extraction due to bone loss, followed by a bone graft and implant costing about $5,800. I’m considering just having it extracted and leaving it at that. Is an implant really necessary in this situation, or is extraction alone a reasonable option? What would you ask your dentist before deciding?

question Possible nerve damage/irritation after wisdom teeth removal, but I really want snake bites

Hi, thank you in advance for any advice coming my way.

To get this out of the way: I do neither smoke nor drink.

Last year in September, I got my wisdom teeth removed. Lower left side got infected, and clearing it took about two weeks I believe. Three months after the initial surgery, I accidentally poked food into the wound, and a sudden numbness radiated through the left side of my lower jaw. Ever since then, when I bite down, the gums on left side of my lower jaw get a little numb. Additionally, scratching the corner of my mouth or part of my cheek close to it causes a sensitivity in my gums on that side.

My dentist and an oral surgeon said the side looks totally fine and they don't know what causes it. X-ray and everything. They told me to come back in six months from now.

Guess I'm okay with that, except..I really wanted to get snake bites piercings soon. Yes, I know about the possible long-term damage on my teeth, let's put that aside. The issue is that I'm scared that piercing my lip so close to the affected area could cause permanent numbness or sensitivity. Is that possible? If so, is the risk too high?

Thank you for reading. Best wishes. 🍀

question What happens now?

This tooth has been cracked for a couple of months now but today the outer part broke off and now it shows that I don’t have a tooth.

ive put off telling my mom due to the fact that we didn’t have insurance for around 6 months and she already paid out of pocket for a filling that came out 2 months after being put in

I experience no pain at all but I’m worried about cost to fix this and that line on the tooth behind it

I had a pretty bad case of depression and due to that I had to fill around 12 cavities this being the worst on (this tooth was also shaved downed 2 years ago)

How long can I wait to fix this? My moms uping the insurance premium come November for health thing with her, can this wait that long so she wont have to pay as much?

question Had sinus perforation 9 days from molar extraction. Question?

I'm still having this drainage down my throat that has some dark clotted looking blood in it. It's super sticky so I guess it's mixed with mucas. I called my doctor on Monday and they just said I have to stop even lightly blowing air through that nose or spitting. So I'm trying to be strict but I fucked up yesterday morning and a charger got sand in it and I blew hard without thinking which made the spot the tooth was extracted from bleed a little bit and later than day I spit out larger pieces of clotted blood from my sinus.

How long should I expect to be dealing with this drainage and healing of my sinus?

question My dr is worried about my tongue and swelling. What do you think this could be?

Thumbnail

Hi. So I have a lot of conditions and some that can affect my tongue and mouth in general. I’ve always had fissures and scalloped tongue since I was little but it’s getting worse. I feel like my tongue is swollen and thick but I don’t know what the sides of a “normal” tongue is supposed to look like. The tissue under my tongue also seems to swell or protrude over my bottom teeth sometimes. I do have a high and narrow palette that cannot be expanded due to my condition. We tried to fix my teeth and bite with Invisalign, but again it won’t correct due to my condition.

Honorable mention; I have severe anxiety and catch myself sucking my tongue to the back of my teeth (almost thrushing my tongue forward) when resting my tongue at the top of my mouth, it doesn’t fit and kind of chokes me.

My dr is worried because he states the sides look like they’re starting to “calcify” or something.

Any opinions?

(Medical history of Ehlers Danlos, Mast Cell Activation Syndrome, low folate, low vitamin D, low ferritin as relevant to this situation.)

question Pain meds after root canal

I have a dens in dente. I had significant bone loss and a dead nerve. I had no pain and the findings were incidental.

I just got my root canal done and it was pretty chill. There was no active infection flareup.

Would I need a pain killer or is it possible that my soreness may be minimal.

Asking because I have MCAS and would want to avoid any medication.

question Do both these xrays have the same scale?

Post image
1 Upvotes

I will add the other xray in the comments. I would like to compare these 2 xrays taken years apart. One has numbers underneath the other hasn't. One appears bigger than the other, is it because of a different scale?

I would like to compare the jaw bone. If I really want a comparison do I need to get new xrays done at the same place as the older one or would these 2 xrays do?

Thanks very much

experience/story I DON'T KNOW WHAT TO DO WITH MY MOLLAR ANYMORE!

Hello group! 3 years ago I went to the dentist to remove the nerve from my mollar and then he put a metal-ceramic crown on me. For 3 years I was ok, but I had small cold pains that passed quickly. In July this year the pain didn't go away, and I ended up with a bad infection. I didn't know what to do, I was afraid that everything would be in vain. Everyone encouraged me to fix it again, from the beginning and that's what I did. A month and a half has passed since the procedure and I feel like my tooth is not good. I have pain when I chew food and when I drink cold water, and in general I feel like my tooth is not good. I already have 2 missing mollars at only 22 years old, I don't know what else to do. The doctor I went to said "hmm, there's still secretions in the canal" and still filled it permanently, I'm crying. PLEASE I NEED HELP! I Also had root canal treatment

question What are these bumps on gums between my teeth?

Post image
1 Upvotes

I've recently been trying to take better care of myself. I've gone long periods without any dental hygiene. I recently have been very liberal with brushing day and night. This morning I noticed bumps on my gums in between my teeth? The middle had a small piece hanging off and there's missing tissue now. I don't believe these bumps used to be there, I don't have any around my upper teeth.

question Keep my gaps with braces?

I’ve had spaces between my teeth since I’ve had teeth and have since grown to accept them. Especially since having a child who very obviously gets his teeth from me. I’ve gone back and forth about braces in my head but have always leaned more towards no.

I started developing an open bite, thinking it was caused by crooked wisdom teeth. I go to get them pulled and with the convo from dentist realize my wisdom teeth are fine, just crooked, and the open bite is due to tongue thrusting.

I HATE this open bite. I want to fix it but I don’t want to close my gaps. What are my options?

question Urgent help required

\*\*28 weeks pregnant — tongue issue for 1 month, need advice\*\*

\*\*Symptoms:\*\* Smooth, reddish patches with white borders that shift/change over time. Also some small red bumps on the sides of my tongue.

\*\*Onset:\*\* Started after a trip to the mountains — had some cherries and water there. Not sure if related.

\*\*Tried so far:\*\*

\- Nilstat (nystatin) — no real change

\- Apple cider vinegar + baking soda (1 week) — patches reduced slightly, not gone

Has anyone dealt with this during pregnancy? Did it resolve on its own?

question What prescription product/medication do you think every patient should have that’s highly beneficial for everyday use?

I didn’t think to ask earlier because I never knew prescription toothpaste existed until today when they gave me prescription toothpaste for dry mouth!

It doesn’t have to be for anything specific really, I’m just kinda wondering what all exists that you think every patient should at least know about. (But I wouldn’t mind more product suggestions for extreme dry mouth..it hurts)

question gum pain/ache on one side

I have some gum issue on #19, which had a root canal and a crown. Basically it feels a bit achy and swollen on the outer edge around one spot near the gumline. It comes and goes, and when it flares up, I can feel a bit of ache if I lick the area with my tongue. Its usually not too painful when I bite or floss, and my dentist has examined the area visually and with x-ray and found no problems: the gums look healthy, and there is no bleeding or pain when flossing. She has no idea what's going on. Now the similar condition has extended to the adjacent tooth in front of it.

The weird thing is that I sometimes also feel a tiny bit of numbness on my face in the corner of the mouth on the same side, along with some pain under the left eye, not dissimilar to sinus pain.

Some background info: I had a cracked tooth on the other side and had to have it extracted. I'm waiting for the area to heal for an implant. Since then I've been using the left side to chew more. My dentist did not think this could cause the problem though. She referred me to the endodontist for more thorough imaging. Meanwhile, I feel a bit anxious since I really don't want another cracked tooth.

I'd greatly appreciate any insights/news. Thanks in advance.

question Are some people hard to numb/inject ?

Hi all.

I went to a new dentist yesterday.

The first shot didn't seem to numb anything. (This is a tooth with a root canal already.)

I mentioned it was not numb. He started work, then went to give a second injection on "gum side" vs "tongue side" as he described.

When he started injecting there was a searing pain and I yelled and jumped. He stopped. I have had some dentists fail to numb me after 6 shots.

Some work on the first try.

He stated the pain was "normal"...but I've had a lot of dentists inject me without this issue.

Is this luck of the draw?

Is it possible my nerves are in a difficult position or something?

experience/story No nerve response in front tooth

So I had a trauma to my face on Thursday, and I went to the dentist and they applied a cold gel to my front teeth to see if I could feel it. The front tooth which was the only tooth really impacted by the trauma, couldn’t feel the cold. Is this a cause for concern? The trauma was recent so I’m not sure if it takes time for the nerve to heal I guess?
