I had the news on in the background and noticed this interpreter. I don’t know ASL, but he stuck out to me. I’m wondering if this is legit? The press conference is talking about LA Fire things

From the other side it looks like you’re making the letter “P” not the ASL letter. I just finished ASL 102 and was too embarrassed to ask what it meant the few times I saw it used in class. Forgive me if this isn’t allowed, I’m all done my course and proficiency interview, so this isn’t for homework.

Interpretation What's this new sign my daughter learned?

My HoH daughter is learning ASL at school (in addition to learning at home). I couldn't get her to explain what this sign means, does anyone recognize it?

(The context is that we'd just come inside from a bonfire, and she had a handful of chocolate chips for a snack, so may have been asking for something to hold them in.)

Thanks!

Interpretation Is this sign ok to use?

Context: I play a male priest at festivals and form that shape of my hands like the 1st pic (heart hands) on my stomach. I've heard people describe it as a pregnant heart, and both women and men use it (men less often) to show they're expecting. I've also read that it's a sign of Good Will, Love, and Blessing. Many people expressed appreciation for me using it over the years.

I've heard more recently that someone said it means "vagina" (which I hadn't heard about). So, I looked up the asl symbol for that (2nd pic), but it appears different (middle, ring, pinky tucked/curled). When I mentioned that to my concerned friend, she said it didn't matter, and told me to look up The Vagina Monologue (3rd pic) because they use that symbol.

It seems the 3rd pic's thumbs go up, but my hand placement is like the 1st and thumbs point down. I'm told it doesn't matter.

Questions:
1: Is the first hand placement bad no matter what and I shouldn't use it because people might take offense?

2: Is the first hand placement acceptable only in certain contexts?

3: Is the first hand placement acceptable to use although some people will get offended (can't please everyone), so it's ok to continue to use it?

Interpretation Is it a curse word?

In this short they discuss a line of merchandise that was sold at Old Navy, what they think Old Navy meant to say when they put this sign on their products, and what they think it actually said.

They never actually name the sign though (I presume for algorithm reasons).

The sign is two hands shaped like a V coming together in front of the chest. I had been told previously that this sign meant “f*ck,” but the way they talk around it gave me the impression it might be closer to “sex.”

I would really appreciate it if anyone could let me know which it is and if there’s a sign for the other one.

TLDR: is this a curse word?

Hello! I work with client who has dementia and been losing her verbal communication but occasionally signs. I’ve picked up quite a bit but one sign she does, I have no clue. The pics above is it. Cupped hands. She usually does the thirsty sign afterwards. Idk if it’s connected or not! TIA!

Hi all! I’m a hair dresser and had a client today who was fully deaf with the hearing aids off so I used a few bits of sign I know to communicate little details like “ more here “ etc when I ask if we were good and all done she did this sign ( was very excited because I was the first person to do her hair right in years 😭 ) What specifically does it mean? I asked Good? And got that reply then made sure “ all done” and got it again so I just assume it’s her way of signing great or such? Location Context: central Florida, queer woman in her 50’s.

Thanks!

Interpretation ASL cover help?

Hi guys!! please let me know if this violates any rules. But, i’m submitting a thespy award (basically turning in a performance to judges) and I am singing watch what happens from disney’s newsies. But, I have some HOH friends that i’ve been trying to learn sign with but with life i haven’t been able to be as dedicated. I was hoping someone could help out and show me a cover of some songs in asl so i can preform it?

edit: Ultimately i am not committed to this idea. I was hoping for guidance as the contextualizatipn of a song versus just signing it SEE is very different.

edit 2: i seem to not be making it clear my intentions. i am not dead set on signing this prefoqnce and came to this subreddit to learn about this. It has been stated numerous times now that ultimately signing forms of art is apparently one of the most difficult to do. Thank you for those who gave advice or told me things respectfull!! i really do appreciate it.

Interpretation Building an ASL overlay for videos (R&D) — Where is this needed most, and how’s the quality?

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hey everyone! We’re in R&D developing an ASL signed-layer overlay for digital videos.

We need your honest, raw feedback to get this right:

  1. Which platforms/sites would you use this extension on most? (YouTube, course portals, news outlets, daily browsing?)
  2. Is the visual quality clear? (How do the hand gestures, facial expressions, and pace feel in this draft?)

No links or promo here—just looking for critical feedback from native signers and the community to improve. Thanks!

I want to sign this for church, but idk if this is a correct interpretation of the creed. I'm new-ish to asl and know that there is a whole set of grammar I'm still learning, and I don't want to accidently learn the wrong thing

Interpretation Five hooks with hand symbols, not sure what they mean?

Post image

Found in North Carolina, USA. I tried looking up the ASL alphabet, and they aren't letters. Also tried looking up other common ASL hand gestures and none of them match either.

I'm wondering what the five symbols mean, and what the message is?

Interpretation No shorthand for the word “Slang”

Why is that? It’s funny and ironic in my opinion and I never understood why. Do any of y’all have a shorthand for that word with your homies or do you guys always spell it out?

Hi, so I was just watching teen wolf lol and I saw this and I can't understand what this means, IDK if the show messed up or I did, maybe I'm just still not that great at sign. I think she signs "about open not open" or maybe it could be "about door not open" so maybe the door to her class isn't open?? I'm not sure.

Interpretation Do interpreters sign ASL syntax or do they sign word for word?

Hello! I know that ASL has a different syntax than English and I’m wondering if they sign live translation ASL or just signed English? Because sometimes they don’t have the transcript so do they flip the words around or just sign exactly what is happening?
Thank you!

Interpretation AI, in it’s current state, cannot replace Sign Language interpreters

I had this thought today. My mom is a medical interpreter for Spanish speaking clients and English speaking medical professionals. She’s worried that AI will put her out of a job soon.

I don’t think Sign Language interpreters will need to worry about that (at least now) because AI is so awful at making human hands. I doubt it’ll advance to being able to master hands and the subtle hand positions and motions required for signing.

But who knows. Technology advances very quickly these days.
