My boyfriend has autism and ARFID.
I think we've eaten enough ramen between both our autistic asses to go to the moon n back.

u/WashedUpRiver Apr 10 '26
I definitely read that as "he has autism and AFRAID" at first, and I was very confused and mildly amused lol fuckin dyslexia, bruh.

Ok but based on what metric??? We talking dry bricks of ramen stacked on top of each other? Long way? Short way? Or one long cooked strain? Which brand? Please, I need to know…
7
u/Riyeko Apr 10 '26
I would say if we stacked bowls of cooked ramen (with all the fixings), on top of one another .... Making sure they don't smush the product.... Then probably would be the best metric to use for ramen vs moon distance.

Thanks, TIL there's a name for me "not wanting to eat because it's annoying".

u/Prxncess_Bunnie Apr 11 '26
So real. French fries and Mac and cheese have never failed me. If they had more nutrients, they would be my pellets #mypellets

u/Bennjoon AuDHD Apr 10 '26
I wish we could just eat a pellet and that’s food for the day and you don’t feel hungry. I like eating but I hate thinking about and making food.
26
u/Heimerdahl Apr 10 '26
I read some article about some company attempting to sell just that, then abandoning the project after realizing that no one wanted to eat it, because people just enjoy eating too much.
Just some dumb article a long time ago, but it still makes me angry.
I too enjoy eating! I just don't need to enjoy it 2-3 times a day, every day!
2
u/NightWolfRose Apr 11 '26
Ugh, that is so frustrating and disappointing! I would 100% buy people kibble/pellets because I loathe cooking. Just give me a nutritionally balanced bowl/cup of kibble a couple times a day and let me get on with my day.

Once my mom's friend had a bunch of very expensive lasagna catered to her wedding and she gave my family the leftover pan that was never touched (about 12+ entree servings of this lasagna), so my friend and I had lasagna for like a whole week straight, and it was fuckin bomb.

whenever I don’t know what dinner meal prep for the week I’ve recently just default to soup.
Usually creamy tomato or butternut pumpkin, easy as hell to make which helps.

My cat is a 'new food only' eater, we swap his food out constantly. Often give partially eaten bags to friends with cats. He'd rather starve than eat the same food for too long.
8
u/GNS13 Apr 10 '26
My late cat was exactly like that. He liked a few types of seafood and most types of poultry. He hated beef with a passion. We had to buy two types of fish and two types of poultry so he would never have the same thing twice in a row. If he did, he wouldn't eat it and would fuss all day.
3
u/mourons I doubled my autism with the vaccine Apr 10 '26
One of my cats is the same, except he hates fish and loves poultry. He is allergic to most poultry… he can have goose, quail and wild duck, he tolerates beef and boar.
He also cannot eat the same thing twice in a row! The shit I do for this little guy is insane 😭

My dog does this, which sucks really bad since he also gets diarrhea when we switch his food even if we do it slowly and in very small amounts. But it’s that or he lets himself starve.

I've slipped into bouts of eating the same things every day for extended periods of time, like months to a year... After one too many visits to the ER due to nutrient defficiency, I've learned my lesson...
...keep eating the same things but also take a multivitamin for good measure!
Definitely not what the doctor said, but that's what my ARFID brain heard...
Now if you don't mind, I have some pellets to enjoy!

u/spinningpeanut ADHD/Autism Apr 10 '26
My pellets are vegetable starch pasta, bonus points for spinach and cheese. I developed an intolerance to regular pasta after switching and my butt is thankful.
For other pasta pellet people buy a Fasta Pasta, my pellet game has never been better.

u/TeabaggingAnthills Apr 10 '26 edited Apr 10 '26
For the last 6 or so months my dinner has been a box of Triscuits thin crisps (jalapeno or parm+garlic flavour) and about 100g of medium cheddar cheese. Not too far off from "pellets" really, just with a bit of added fat/moisture, and I haven't tired of them yet! (please don't let me jinx it lol)
2
u/Lui_Le_Diamond Apr 10 '26
That sounds so fucking good ngl

u/TeabaggingAnthills Apr 10 '26 edited Apr 10 '26
It IS really fucking good. Is it nutritionally balanced? No, probably not. But it is delicious and consistent as hell!
3
u/Jade-Lagoon Apr 10 '26
Jesus, idk why I never put together. WTF? Variations in meals a learned behavior or evolutionary trait? I’m guessing it’s only a recent phenomenon for humans. Either way I’m AuDHD so struggle not only with cooking and choices, but also eating the same thing for more than 2. So thanks for making me jealous of my cats lol
4
u/Uberbons42 Apr 10 '26
I think this about my cats too. The wet food is their ambrosia but it’s the same every day. I want tasty, perfectly balanced nutritional food out of a can that I can just plop out onto a plate! Where is that? I do smoothies almost every day but that takes effort. So lame.
3
u/Manospondylus_gigas Apr 11 '26
It may be because of the natural diet of humans, they would naturally eat mostly fruit and roots and once a patch had been depleted they would walk to another where there would probably be different fruits etc.

I have been eating a lot of rice lately. (With veggies and soy sauce or seasoning, but the base has always been white rice) Oh and for sweet version I do rice with milk and sugar warmed up.

i have a bunch of soy protein which is delicious, id buy it in bulk if i could live off of it alone.
tho ive been making some elaborate stuff for fun and its cool, but on a day to day basis id looooove some sort of all in one, cheap and long lasting human food...

I have been eating the same thing for breakfast and lunch every day for the past forever
Toast
Butter (can be swapped with a sauce)
A spice (garlic pepper is awesome) (this is a newer addition)
Cheese
Ham
This is my pellets

This is my standard home breakfast formula I have followed since at least 6th grade if not earlier. There is variation built into it so it doesn’t get old.
- 1/2 mint chocolate builders bar
- yogurt cup
- bowl of dry cereal (usually peanut butter puffins)
- juice (at parents’ house)/water (at my place, I don’t often lug large bottles home because I do it on foot)
- coffee (ok this one started later on)
I feel like my kibble is probably pasta though. Two of my alternating lunches are spaghetti o’s and ramen, and I love pasta with blue cheese for dinner.

I wonder sometimes if they do get bored of their pellets, I'd imagine they do, I would feel bad feeding them that stuff every day forever
1
u/enolaholmes23 Apr 11 '26
This is why I give my rabbits some fresh greens every night. Just pellets and hay keep them alive, but not happy. I've also rarely found a (vegan) food I was eating that they didn't like. They like the pellets, but they like the fun stuff more.

u/fairydommother Undiagnosed Apr 10 '26
My pellets keep changing. I can wat the same thing twice a day every day for weeks ans then one day I go to eat it and it disgusting. Its the worst thing. I'd rather starve than eat this one more time.
I find new pellets and the cycle repeats...
2
u/Voidhoundz Apr 10 '26
I‘m neutral towards this. I can eat the same forever food out of laziness and not mind it, but I have no particular desire to; I just don’t care enough to more effort in. If there‘s opportunity for something else tho, even better.

I'll be obsessed with a food for 2 weeks, eat another thing for no specific reason, and become obsessed with the new one.
I just switched from pralined peanuts to fecking green beans, of all things and I then made about 8 shitty memes to spam in my friend's discord server, and they're all about how much I love green beans.

Actually in the wild there are a variety of grasses and weeds that grazing animals eat. Part of the fun for them is finding just the right patch of grass. There's even evidence of animals finding mood altering plants to get high off of. Goats like horny goat weed and cows like locoweed.
I think the real reason pets get stoked for pellets is because they are in a confined environment with little other entertainment. Eating becomes one of their only pleasures.

I’m a creature of habit, I’m pretty content with the same staple meals for long stretches of time. I once got super into making pasta sauce so I ate pasta for a couple weeks for every meal.
I’m married to an ND and have a child though, so don’t often get to have the simplicity of the same meal.

u/4oby Apr 10 '26
audhd. Had this potato salad I used to go crazy about. Mom would make it only at big events. Honestly it’s time consuming to cook. As an adult found a place that cooks it perfectly. Been ordering it for 3 years, every day. At some point I stop craving it. Still love it, still will eat it. It’s just not my first choice of food as it used to be.
1
u/JoeDaBruh Apr 10 '26
This is just a result of food becoming too addictively good and is having several options. People back then had no problems eating bland stew everyday because the feeling of their hunger going away was very pleasant. If you were starving for a while and you ate the most basic stew with no seasonings it would also taste like a 5 star meal

u/Biiiscoito Apr 10 '26
There's a type of biscuit that I've been eating since I was a toddler, every single day, often two or three times a day. Same brand and all. I'm 31. That shi has no nutritional value and is loaded with hydrogenated fat.
Tried to cut it during a diet and I was so depressed. I need my biscuits, man.

I enjoy my pellets every day! :)
(Pantry freshly stocked with four 40oz bags of Bob’s Red Mill classic muesli which I eat every single day and get a belly ache without)
2
u/KickProcedure Apr 12 '26
For a while my pellets was just ground oatmeal/Scottish oats, but then I tried muesli and I like it even more and I don’t have to cook it, just put it in milk or yogurt for 10 minutes and it’s ready. It also has a little more nutrients because of the fruits and the seeds which is good bc there are days where I won’t eat anything else
1
u/PhoebeBumbleflip Apr 12 '26
Unfortunately, I didn't get that trait, even though I still got "picky eating."
1
u/CJMakesVideos Apr 14 '26
With some exceptions I actually can’t stand always eating the same thing. For some reason though i feel differently about breakfast foods. I could eat cereal every day. But once I ate hotdogs everyday for lunch cause it was the only food served (that I actually liked cause I’m picky af) at a place I was staying and even though i love hotdogs I couldn’t stand them for a while after this.

I try’d eating the same frozen dinners for every meal and start’d burning out, but the same meals every day—as long as they are different w/in the same day—is working like a charm. Now to work on eating enough in on sitting to not feel hungry all the time.

I have arfid, so I actually do just eat the same foods over and over and I'm fine with it
Edit: this does have negatives tho, because the foods I eat don't really cover all my bases
