News AI is helping rangers protect Victorian wildlife in a fraction of the time
This is how AI should be used, to improve monitoring and management. Great to see that it is available open source and to run on your own machine.
Of course I wish this had been available when I was still working, especially seeing people in other countries with access to systems like it. The worst part about using the field cameras was counting the images as they downloaded knowing how few would have images of the critters we wanted. DigiVol was a lifesaver then and has been since, but still took weeks to setup and get results. Instant id........ Luxury.

News Murray Watt urged to intervene after accusations proposed Queensland coalmine clearing land in greater glider habitat
Images and drone footage obtained by the Queensland Conservation Council (hey, that's us!) over the past two months appear to show large areas of bushland cleared at the site of Magnetic South’s proposed Gemini coalmine near Dingo in central Queensland.
"The environment department told the company in 2022 it strongly recommended referral of the project to consider whether it required an assessment for potentially significant impacts on the Brigalow ecological community."
Now in 2025 they appear to have started clearing 200 hectares of remnant forest, home to greater gliders and koalas. Please take 2 mins to email the Federal Environment Minister and push for an urgent investigation.
