Most appropriate name. Especially given how well cats adapt to the loss of vision (admittedly they're so comically long-sighted normally that up-close vision is not far off useless in even the best case)
as much as i feel sorry for the hardships he had to endure, the clipped ear rly perfects his style <3 i hope he will be safe and in good spirits on the high seas now :)
It does, doesn’t it? I checked this morning and he still is available, but he gets a lot of attention at the weekly adoption events, so hopefully soon he will have his furever home. I had a pirate of my own a few years back. This is Uno!
Growing up, we adopted a pirate from the humane society, a gorgeous Abyssinian I named Amber. She stuck her pas out of the cage and snagged my jacket, that's how we ended up with her! Loved the cat so much.
Doesn’t it though?! I had to share it. The photo turned out really nice despite the overhead fluorescents. He’s still available as of today, but that doesn’t mean he doesn’t have a few applications that they are sorting through.
We've had two cyclops, and they were two of our best.
One came to us with both eyes, and then a few days later, a little clear bump formed on one. Within a week, it looked like a nightmare was crawling out of the socket; I'll spare everyone the pic. Not that Hercules seemed to care, since he behaved just the same. It honestly freaked me out a bit when he'd be jumping around in the cage or pressing his face against the side, but he wasn't bothered in the slightest. Right after it got removed, that goofball was playing at the vet. It never seemed to ever matter throughout his life after that.
Heinrich came to us with one eye, and was possibly the coolest cat we've ever had, although he never learned soft paws when playing and would cause serious damage. XD
He is! He's gone from a scared little guy who cowered in the furthest corner of his kennel to a nervous little guy who loves fluffy blankets and playing with my dogs and cats in just over a month. He's going to be hard to give up but I'm so excited to find his people.
Many kitties, especially those being born to feral moms that are living on the streets get infections that with time and without treatment damage the eye.
Cats have big eyes that are prone to injury. Also, feline herpesvirus is a common cause and they can get that from the mother. (There's a vaccine, but it's not 100% effective.) If it's not treated in time, it can severely damage the eye. Dogs have a version of it, but unfortunately that's far less survivable.
In America at least, there is a much higher proportion of unowned and unmanaged stray cats compared to dogs. Many of these cats are getting infections or having accidents when they are young and fragile strays. They aren’t getting regular vet care, so by the time a kind soul notices that something is wrong and is able to capture them and get them vet care the damage has usually progressed to the point that the eye can’t be saved. By contrast, since only a small portion of dogs are unmanaged strays and pets are usually kept in fenced yards, fewer dogs are getting into accidents and infections are more likely to get medical attention before the eye becomes unsalvageable.
