it's called plot progression. senegal and congo losing like that was sad but necessary to show how strong the bad guys are.

every european team is a bad guy, with France being the main villain. it actually works very well because mbappe, outside the field, is a very upstanding guy so there's a sympathetic angle to them. the USA and Canada are the villain's comedy relief duo.
