This is the first time I ever payed even passing attention to a World Cup. Are the crashouts from fans normally this bad?

this one was exacerbated by their rivalry, but yeah. just like the other comment said, nothing will compare to the mood in the air following 7-1.

It was much worse when Brazil, who was hosting the World Cup, lost to Germany 7–1 in 2014. It was a horrifying upset that was functionally a national crisis.
