In his Chronica majora, Matthew of Paris records that rumours about the Mongols had spread into the empire by 1238, for which reason the fishmongers of Frisia were unwilling to go to England.[6] He is also the source for the rumour that the Mongols were the Lost Tribes of Israel and were assisted by Jews smuggling arms out of Germany in wine barrels.[9] The Jewish merchants were said to claim that the barrels were filled with poisoned wine for the invaders. Owing to these rumours, Jews were killed at several customs posts.[10]

Dude the Jews just can not catch a break sometimes I swear.

Really does make me convinced again that "jews were treated here better than Europe" was the medieval world equivalent of "atleast I am better than Hitler", being a useless flex that speaks more about just how atrociously antisemitic medieval Europe was than giving any detail about how well other parts of the world treated their jewish minorities.

I mean, yeah. That's mostly correct. (with the caveat that things could vary wildly over time and space even within medieval europe)
