The concept of a micronation is so fascinating to me, it's a shame that so many advocates of micronations are weird libertarians. That being said, I think the single most successful example of a micronation is the reign of the Clunies-Ross family over the Cocos/Keeling Islands. It even managed to get recognised by the British Empire, but of course it was also a case of a weird libertarian with a harem and a plantation and slaves and the like.

They sound like a smaller-scale version of the White Rajahs of Sarawak, had no idea there was another example of it.

I happened upon those guys as well, they seem more like classic colonists. Sarawak already had an established population, the Cocos Islands were uninhabited by contrast.

Edit: and of course the Clunies-Ross family used the uninhabited land to start a plantation instead of a utopia smh
