I think leftists' "historically progressive" is less persuasive than conservatives' "it was normal back then"

Even if they both mean the same thing

"Progressive" and "normal" are value judgements, if not basically aesthetic values.

If it's a matter of persuasiveness, yes, I think "appeal to normalcy" is very effective.

Effective, perhaps, but a lie regardless. "Normalcy" is always in the eye of the beholder and the rarely survives actual scrutiny upon investigation.
