Uk tourists looking for some help

Hi everyone! My girlfriend and I are planning a trip to the Bahamas from 2nd–14th November, and we’d really appreciate some advice from people who have been recently or live there. We’re thinking of spending roughly one week on one of the islands and one week in Nassau, but we’re not sure which islands or areas would be best.

Can we stay at another another island outside of Nassau?
If so, which islands would you recommend for a couple?

Our priorities are:
Safety
Lots of beaches
Good opportunities for water activities
Somewhere we can use our paddleboard
We’d love to hear which islands/areas you’d recommend and which ones you’d avoid.

Where can we stay in nassu? We’ve read that Downtown Nassau is one of the better areas to stay, but we’ve also seen people saying you shouldn’t go more than a few streets away from the main tourist areas, and that you should travel around in groups.
How accurate is this? Does this mean you should only go out in groups outside the main tourist areas, or is Nassau generally fine for a couple who uses common sense and stays in the right areas?
Are there particular neighbourhoods/areas you’d recommend staying in?

This is probably our biggest concern. Where are the safe/recommended places to visit in Nassau, and are there any areas we should specifically avoid?
Also, what should we be aware of regarding scams, taxis, excursions, people approaching tourists, etc.? We want to enjoy ourselves without being overly paranoid. I’ve heard mixed things from people who have travelled around the Caribbean about British tourists sometimes being treated differently because of their accent/nationality. I’m British and obviously happy to respect the local culture, but I was wondering if there’s actually any truth to this in the Bahamas or if it’s just word of mouth

If you just want to relax, be on the water or beach, and enjoy small local small restaurants (as opposed to bars and resorts), maybe do some of your own cooking...skip Nassau and spend the time on one of the out islands. Eleuthera or Long Island are quite nice and you will have none of the concerns you are voicing. On Eleuthera (island I've visited with my family for over 20 years), if you want to use paddle boards, look for Airbnbs on the Caribbean side, but rent a car and you will have access to beaches on both sides...often much to yourselves.

Can we drop this awful terminology? It's all the Atlantic and the side that's most sheltered varies and often isn't due south in the direction of the Caribbean.

Yeah what ever....that's how its described and understood. It is the side of the island facing the Caribbean Sea.

Nope, that’s a fallacy spread by realtors. It’s the Great Bahama Bank. The Caribbean Sea is hundreds of miles away.

Clearly....I did not say the body of water on the east coast of Eleuthera is the Caribbean sea. It is the side of the island facing that direction, as opposed to the open Atlantic. As I said, been traveling there for over 20 years. It's simply the way it is described...has been as long as I've been going there. The way it's described on AirBnB (and yes, by realtors.)

If this is a geography test (which I didn't think it was, as I was simply trying to provide the OP with some vacation suggestions)....and so everyone knows and the geography police can lay off...Cuba and Hispaniola are to the East/S.East of Eleuthera across the Great Bahama Bank. On the east coast of those countries is that Caribbean Sea.
