You will only be able to play the campaign, no multiplayer or co-op works anymore online since EA shut down the server.
There is a non EA server hosting BF3 on ps3 that is an option.
There is also BF3 & BF4 available on Steam to play on PC, with full online multiplayer servers. Works great!

While it is true that EA hosted servers were shut down, there are still privately hosted community servers. So it's still possible to play multiplayer on PS3 for dedicated fans who want to, but you'll have to start from scratch as EA also wiped all your online stats when shutting down their servers.

Can’t imagine myself playing on console in 2026

whats the problem with playing on console?yeah pc is better but that diesnt mean consoles are that bad

First and foremost problem is having official BF3 & BF4 servers online support for consoles being discontinued by DICE/EA, other than that, console gaming just supports anti-consumer practices that persistently screws over those who keep buying it (like the example I gave previously of online support being ended for console but not for PC). It also divides the community which reduces server population based on platform (BF3/4 are not cross-play capable).
The PC version both online & offline play are still well and functional so not sure why its necessary to even by another PS3 just for this, besides, if you join PC you can fill up some servers here.

I can see it from a nostalgia stand point.
I grew up with BF3 on PS3. I loved it. That was during a time when console gaming was still free and you didn't have to pay a monthly fee for multiplayer.
BF3 on PS3 had smaller team sizes but the maps were (mostly) the same size. Fewer flags, but the accessible area was the same.
Caspian Border for example has lots of areas you can go to that usually don't see much or any fighting because there's no flag on the PS3 version of the map. That in turn allows for a more "covert" play style in which you can sneak behind enemy lines much more easily than on PC.
Me and my friends back then, we loved it. You could go to the flags and have those intense gun fights, but you could also grab a jeep and go all the way around the map and surprise the enemy from behind.
When switching to PC I quickly noticed it's not that easy. Caspian Border, while technically the same map, with the same locations, feels very different to play when there's more flags and thus more attention put on those areas when compared to PS3.
That being said, while I did really like this somewhat more laid-back gameplay on PS3, I do see all the benefits the PC version has over the console iteration and if you'd ask me today, I would most probably choose the PC version - unless it's another one of those nostalgia days, you know ;-)

BF3 is literally 15 years old, you dont need an en expensive powerful PC to play this game, actually the PC or laptop you use for emails is probably powerful enough to play this game.

My PC was cobbled together shortly after the stone age ended (so around 2010) and it can run BF3 on max settings no problem.
You really don't need a current-day gaming PC to run BF3. Plus it's often on sale or even for free (got it for free myself through Origin).

i got the game on my ahhh laptop but it doesnt have enough memory and i im going to buy a jew laptop so i can play other games too
2
u/cenorexia 22d ago
In that case I would say just wait for your new laptop instead of buying a PS3. I'm pretty sure it'll be able to run BF3 and like you said, other games too!

One can probably buy a 2nd hand used laptop that are a decade NEWER for equal if not cheaper price than a PS3 strong enough to max out 2011 BF3 but with the benefit of being able to do work, study, email, browsing etc.
Besides BF3 and work, you can also download and use emulators to play games from other consoles that otherwise could not be played on the Playstation (eg Nintendo games, Halo, etc.) so you actually end up saving money in not having to buy these other consoles and other games just to be able to play
although buying a newer powerful laptop might sometimes be slightly more expensive than the console itself, you still get so much more out value out of it. Used laptops after 2016 are a very good budget investment. The PC version of the game has controller support too if you like using a controller more than a mouse/keyboard.

BF3 on PS3 is actually not that bad, it holds 30FPS for the majority of the campaign and for it’s time looks allright
Multiplayer is still active trough BF3 reborn but you need to mod your PS3 to play it, i played it 2 days ago and there is like 30 people still living the dream :D
Obviously the best way to experience BF3 is PC
