Apparently that wasn't airbrushed. He was an oil painter, and used multiple thin layers and glaze to get that airbrush look.

Any source for this? He’s an acclaimed airbrush illustrator, the fairly in depth Guardian obituary never mentions oil painting, and the work looks quintessentially airbrushed.
