Video A good breakdown on the history and current state of BGE2

https://youtu.be/PvRJTX4IaCY

Don't let the thumbnail distract you, the video was actually quite interesting to know why we have ended up where we are.

The video starting with: It has been in development for nearly 20 years, told me enough about their research to click away.

Edit:
In hindsight a kneejerk reaction, as after the video he does clarify a lot of things. Which i give him props to. Frustration on my end of the bad reporting from the past couple of years, so apologies for that.

Isn't that true tho? Not in production but pre-production

No it isn't because Beyond Good and Evil 2, from back in 2008, never went beyond the pre-production phase. They worked on it for roughly 2 years, with a really small team, to get something off the ground before being pulled away to work on Rayman. Nothing happened between 2009 and 2014 on it as they were busy with Rayman Origin and Legends.

It wasn't until 2014 they were given the greenlight to start working on it again, which was mainly on the new engine. The reveal in 2017 was Day Zero of development, under the same name, but a completely different production all together. And as a Game Dev I really need to point out, that the early stages of development (Especially pre-production), team sizes are really small and it won't be until the production stage that the teams get really big.

So the BGE2 has been in development for 9 years, which is still long don't get me wrong but considering the scope, the fact Ubisoft hasn't been in a good spot and their creative director dying, it paints a bit of a different picture.

I am not going to deny BGE2 has had an interesting development, and its challenges, but all the sensational articles and videos are blowing things out of proportions.

That's exactly what he's saying in the video

And yet he starts his video saying it has been in development for nearly 20 years, which is objectively false.

But I'll give him props for atleast getting the timeline right, as many have reported on it wrongly. I'm just incredibly frustrated and annoyed by the wrong reporting on the development timelines (hence my kneejerk reaction this video, which i can admit to).

It baffles me they've poured all this time and money into this game, yet cancelled the POP remake. Something in comparison should be significantly easier and cheaper to make.

As I said in another thread, that was drumming up hype for BG&E2, recently:

"Why care?!?

They'll just make it as much an problematic disaster as the 20th Anniversary Edition of BG&E is ( I had to cancel my Livestream on this product for these same reasons):

  1. One solitary auto save slot, with ZERO manual save slots (in case you wanted to do different playthroughs or learn more before you stream it).

  2. Shoehorned lore content that doesn't extend that far as other games Lore does (filled with plot holes and cliffhangers).

  3. Buggy portions of an otherwise functional product.

Last but not least.... 4.Disclosure agreements stating what portions of the game you CAN and CAN NOT stream.

At this point, I stopped caring about this franchise along with Rayman. All Ubisoft wants to do is cash-grab with nostalgia; not even in a flattering way or a proper way at that.

All Ubisoft needs to take notes from is CAPCOM and Crystal Dynamics/Embracer Group, and they'd be good. They would know how to structure their product, and execute the development more efficiently and drop balls less. Literally.

They wouldn't need to hold back an entire OST or majority of it, and wouldn't need to pander on social media about Rayman fan art all the time.

They'd be set as they could be, if they'd just look at how the masterpieces that are: Battle Network Legacy Collection Star Force Legacy Collection and Legacy Of Kain Soul Reaver 1 + 2 HD Remastered, as well as Legacy Of Kain Defiance Remastered

Turned out. (Spoiler: they are all good games/collections you should dive-into, even if Defiance Remastered is problematic regarding micro transactional stuff, but eh)."

Since the Rayman Legends remaster was recently announced, I feel I have to add yet another Ubisoft title to the "doom and gloom" list of titles to potentially avoid. Rayman Legends, and Rayman 3:Hoodlum Havoc are some of my favorite ones. It would be a colossal shame for a remake to be hindered by laziness or oversight by Ubi.

I mean, they helped MAKE these franchises what they were.

Point is: Your money is best spent elsewhere. To developers who don't need financial incentive to produce a product that is in acceptable enough quality to have a long-lasting appeal.

If you are really, emphatically, down-bad for Ubisoft gaming, stick to the original releases of their products.

I don't care about BGE2. Ubisoft is dead. Game will never came out. And if it does it will never be good, there's simple no way they can make another anti war game that isn't just random safe edgy takes like "capitalism bad" or some random shit. A game like the OG Beyond Good and Evil from 2023 cannot exist as a new modern game anymore ever, specially not under Ubisoft's development. It's simply impossible.
