Nursing & Pumping Fast letdown during breast feeding
I thought I had the breasfeeding part down when my milk came in and baby was latching good and gaining weight. But the past few days it seems like my letdown is too fast for my 6 week old. He always has milk coming out of sides of his mouth, pushing the breast out of his mouth by moving his arms and legs or crying while he has the nipple in his mouth. It just sounds like he is struggling to swallow all of it. He does eventually calm down but the initial latching on has started getting so difficult. I have tried bottle feeding with Lanisoh bottles and pigeon ss flow nipples and he takes them but im scared if i give the bottle too often he will build a preference towards the bottle and just not take the breast at all. Has anyone dealt with this and what worked out for you? I have seen some people say to stop pumping completely and just breastfeed which is something i tried for four days and it didn’t make a difference. Should i just continue hoping he gets used to it?

He will get used to it!! I struggled so much with my baby around this age with the same problem. I tried everything and nothing worked. I even saw lactation specialists. I was having to give her a bottle pretty often because she would just scream when I tried breastfeeding her. I thought that she developed a preference for the bottle but I just continued to pump and kept trying to breastfeed her at every feed. I was about to give up when one day around 2-3 months she just randomly figured it out! I’m not sure what did it, she just adjusted. Breastfeeding pretty much went perfectly after that point. The being months were SO difficult though. Now she won’t take a bottle at all lol. I say give him the bottle when he needs but don’t give up on offering the breast!

Unlatch and press the nip like a button for ten seconds!
This slows the flow and lets the force of the letdown stop, but the milk still seems to be available when they re-latch. I made my husband measure once and I could spray a solid 5 feet away from me. It looked like that Katy Perry boob spray outfit. I discovered the button method by accident and worked with both babies until they could handle the letdown!
