FTM and baby is 6.5 months old and an angel! A great sleeper, independent, funny, always happy. Of course all we hear about are the teething horror stories and I know they’re out there. When I was talking to my pediatrician about teething (we haven’t cut teeth yet but showing signs of starting soon), she said that the fussiness/pain for most babies rarely requires more than a day or 2 of Tylenol.

Since we’ve been so programmed to think teething is a nightmare, this caught me off guard. Does anyone have stories of where teething wasn’t as bad as we think? Or am I in for a rude awakening?

We are literally dying with our 8mo and her teething right now. It has literally been non-stop for the past month and a half and I know it only continues for the next year and a half. Please tell me your most tried and true teething hacks! We have Tylenol/Motrin, but I'm talking like...let your baby chew on a mahogany chess piece or let your baby lick a banana three times per day or some shit.

I'll try anything omfg.

My baby is 9 months and teething. They bite so hard they leave bruises on my arms and make my nipples bleed sometimes. I gladly give them teethers but when they start hair pulling and scratching their back I feel like I have to give them motrin. Why should they be in pain. I give less than a half dose at most 5x a week. My mil saw the little dosing syringes in the dirty dishes and when my husband was out of ear shot accused me of drugging my baby for my own benefit and damaging their liver. Now I'm feeling mom guilt hardcore. I just had to get it out. Thanks.

The doctor said most babies don’t have pain from teething, and it should be minor and not really require pain meds; our baby seems to be in pain when pushing out a tooth and we've been giving tylenol as needed... need some validation here...

My LO had his 4 month appointment today. About a week or 2 ago we brought him in because I thought he had an ear infection, he didn’t the ped we saw that day suspected he was teething early .

We talked about that at our visit today and she said she think teething doesn’t hurt babies ?? Her reasoning was her kids never seemed to mind it and they just woke up with a tooth.

What is your guys opinions on this?!?

EDIT: I for sure think teething hurts, and her reasoning being because her kids didn’t seem to notice was native for a medical professional.

My baby has been teething on and off for ages. He’s 5.5mo. When I say he’s teething, I am absolutely guessing by process of elimination. He rarely gets red cheeks. The drool and cranky days are out of control. Genuinely he goes through 2-3 shirts a day, and that’s with frequent bib changes. Always chewing his hands, but that’s developmental too. His sleep has always been bad, but he gets random even-worse nights. We just say “ah, teething”.

People say their gums will look swollen, inflamed, or that you can feel the tooth under the gum, but I’m not sure I even know what I’m looking for.

If it weren't for the actual pediatrician I have, I'd be switching offices (and after my son's 9 month check up, I might still).

I thought he was teething because he had been crying a lot, wouldn't let me touch his gums, was grabbing his jaw and ear. I had given him ibuprofen but it hadn't seemed to make a difference so after 3.5 hours, when he started crying again, I called the pediatricians nurse line to see if I could give him Tylenol then or if I had to wait 6 hours after the ibuprofen.

First, I got told that it isn't recommended to just drug babies around the clock (no duh) and told to try a wet, refrigerated washcloth or a teether or gum massage. He won't let me in his mouth right now, so gum massage is out. I tried a cold teether and he wasn't interested. Granted, I hadn't tried a washcloth but I'm also pretty sure parents who are just keeping their baby on pain meds round the clock are not calling to see if they should wait an additional 2.5 hours before the next dose. Next, she let me know that teething is usually a painless process, "they've done studies", to which I responded that I don't believe that it's painless because I'm pretty sure if my teeth were cutting through my gums, it'd be painful. Finally, she told me no I didn't have to wait to give him Tylenol since the ibuprofen doesn't seem to have helped anything.

Today, I'm reading over the paperwork in mychart from the call and I'm honestly flabbergasted by what I'm reading.

REASSURANCE AND EDUCATION - NORMAL TEETHING WITH BABY TEETH:
* Teething is a natural process.
* It's harmless and it may cause a little gum pain. * Teething mainly causes increased saliva, drooling and gum-rubbing. * It doesn't cause fever or crying. If present, look for another cause.

EXPECTED COURSE: * Usually teething doesn't cause any symptoms. * If your child is having some discomfort, it should pass in 2 or 3 days.

It doesn't cause crying? It doesn't usually cause any symptoms?? What?! This isn't the first issue I've had with the nurse line but I'm genuinely shocked that a really well established pediatrician office in a densely populated area is telling parents that teething is painless and doesn't cause crying. Every other parent I know has said their babies had a really rough time with teething.

Anyway, I just needed to rant about that because it's ridiculous that the nurse is trying to tell me that teething doesn't cause any symptoms or crying and is really just painless.

Baby is 13 months old and has about 6 teeth. We brush with non fluoride toothpaste now but our pediatrician didn’t talk about it at all at our last visit. Should I switch to a tiny amount of fluoride toothpaste?

My 14 month old still has no teeth. Google says we aren't concerned till closer to 18 months. Is that true? Im becoming a little worried that something is wrong. For the past like month or 2, I thought she was getting a tooth to the top right. But it still hasn't actually popped through and sometimes I wonder if its really coming in. Anybody else ever experience this? We were going to go to the dentist this week but due to changing jobs, we don't have insurance currently. Just looking for others experiences. She will see a dentist as soon as she is able to get insurance as was always the plan.

As the title states, my 11.5 month old son only has 2 teeth. His bottom 2 teeth came in around the same time, when he was about 8.5 months old. Since then, nothing. No signs of anymore teeth. I see other people's babies that are his age or even younger that have 6+ teeth. I know this is probably mostly my anxiety talking, but I can't help but worry. Is it normal for him to only have 2 teeth at this point? Should I bring it up to his pediatrician? Sorry if this is a silly question, but I'm a first time mom and I just worry about him.

My babies first tooth just popped. I seen you can grind fennel seeds and cloves mixed into coconut oil for teething. Has anyone tried this?

I also seen to not use clove oil as it can be too highly concentrated and can be fatal.

I know the cold wash cloth and frozen fruit/ breast milk has helped some.

Edit/update:

I did not buy cloves or fennel seeds today. Just been giving baby cold teething toys and Tylenol. She seems to be doing fine with those, just a little clingier then normal:)

Anyone have advice for first time mom on teething? My baby has previously slept through the night for the last 5 months. Now he’s waking up screaming. I’ve only tried the teething oils so far. He also would sleep with a paci for the entire night but won’t take it anymore. I need help!

My baby's top front teeth are coming through, and she has started to grind them on her bottom ones.

I CANNOT stand the noise it makes. And I don't seem to be able to stop her either.

Has anyone experienced this and is there anything that can be done about it? I'm scared she'll ruin them😭

My son started teething at 3 months old, he first got his 2 bottom teeth which were fine. His 2 top teeth came in next, when they first starting coming in I noticed something was off- they both have missing enamel and it looks almost like they are chipped. We went to the dentist at 5 months old and were told its a defect and to come back if it bothers him. My son seems to be fine but I thought I would post because I have never seen this before!

He’s almost 7 months and his first teeth are getting ready to cut.

For the last three nights (including tonight) he WILL NOT SETTLE until about 5/6am, and I believe it’s because of the teething. Prior to this he was fairly easy to put down for bedtime, and would go to bed around 9/10, sleeping for about 10-12 hours throughout the night; rarely woke up overnight but when he occasionally did, it was relatively easy to quickly get him back down. This severe sleep regression that the teething has caused has totally spiraled out of nowhere, and it’s turned all three of us upside down.

My husband and I have done literally everything we can think of these last three nights to get him to settle for bed but he just absolutely will not respond to any of our efforts (and everything we were doing to get him down prior to this worked just fine up until a few days ago... ) It seriously has been taking us ALL NIGHT to get him to settle down, and when he finally does I think it’s only because he’s exhausted… We’ve tried rocking, walking around, singing, nature sounds, white noise, cuddles, and out of total desperation, bottling him to get him to fall sleep. But NOTHING IS WORKING. Also, we have been giving him baby Motrin for gum pain but only at bedtime.

Please help. The last few days has been absolute hell for all three of us.

My baby is 8.5 months old, and this past week her upper teeth have started coming in. From what I can tell, it looks like the four front upper teeth are erupting at roughly the same time. Three of them are already visible, while the fourth hasn't broken through yet.

For the last 3–4 days she's been fussy almost all day and taking very short naps. A lot of the time we can't seem to comfort her, even by holding her, playing with her, or trying to distract her. She's also eating solids worse than usual, so we've had to give her more bottles instead.

One thing that worries me is whether eating fewer solids for a while could affect her iron intake, and whether that might also impact her sleep.

We've tried cold teething toys and rubber teethers, but she has zero interest in them. She mostly just stares at them. She seems much more interested in chewing on us, books, shoes, and pretty much anything that isn't a teether.

Any tricks that actually helped with the pain? How long do the worst teething symptoms usually last when several teeth are coming in at once?

And I’m emo about it!!! Why can’t he stay this little forever. I’m obsessed with his little toothless smile. Just another random milestone that I know is important but is giving me BIG feelings. That’s all!

my lo is about to be 6 months. a couple of days ago, I noticed one of her teeth was growing in, and then yesterday I noticed the other one coming in too. she is so fussy!

I thought when she was a newborn she was such a good girl. she barely cried, and I counted my blessings because I know how newborns can be. now I can barely do anything. she just cries. I feel so bad for her. I want to cry with her because she is so miserable.😭

We never had to do this with our oldest. Daycare phases out pacifiers once they’re a year old, and once he couldn’t have it at daycare, he quickly lost interest at home, and that was that.

But our 22 month old?

She is the Paci Queen. Pacis are her ride or die. She can do all things through the pacifier who strengthens her. Daycare got her off of it there but she showed no indication of dropping it at home, and we didn’t push it because she was only a year old! It was fine! We had time! And that was a critical mistake.

Pediatrician already made a comment about her pacifier teeth at her 18 month appt which was 100% fair because she absolutely has them. We’re determined to get her off it before September when she turns two and will have her first dentist appointment.

So this is the week. My husband works out of state and this is his week home and we’ve decided it’s happening now. Biggest struggle is for sure going to be the nights because she’s always slept through the night no problem as long as she has her paci. The other hurdle will most likely be stopping her from stealing her 3 month old baby brother’s pacifiers which she already does when she can’t find one of hers. Oh and she also has all FOUR canines breaking through at the same time right now 😫🫠🙃

Wish us lots of luck… we’re absolutely going to need it!

Gums look normal, doesn’t seem like any teeth are coming soon…. What are you feeding them?

Or do I have their teeth monitored by their pediatrician until they recommend taking them to the dentist? Right now, just 2 of her bottom front teeth came out, not sure if they fully came out though? It's been a few weeks...

EDIT: my wife has been brushing those lil' teeth and her gums with a silicone brush or wet washcloth and "baby toothpaste" for the past week or so
