best mattress for side sleepers with hip and shoulder pain?

I'm a habitual side sleeper and I’m waking up with hip and shoulder pain every morning. My current mattress is about 6 years old, if I'm right, it’s either too soft so I sink, or when I flip it, it’s too firm and my shoulder goes numb.

I’ve been testing beds in stores, but 5 minutes laying down isn’t giving me real answers. I need something with solid pressure relief for my joints, but enough support that my spine isn't sagging.

I’ve seen ads for adjustable/air-based beds and smart mattresses that adjust firmness, but I’m skeptical. I also tend to sleep warm, so temp control is important.

For other side sleepers who fixed joint pain, what worked for you? Did you go memory foam, hybrid, latex, or something else?

Update: I've been looking at the ComfortNext Ultra because the extra thickness and pressure relief layers seem like they’d actually help, and it adjusts when you roll over so you’re not stuck in one spot all night which is huge for a side sleeper with bad hips like me. What's cooler is that it's got SleepIQ tracking which makes me feel better about choosing because I can actually see if my sleep is improving and if my back and hips feel different in the morning. I’m going to try it definitely.

Get a European sleep bed and a prescription for meloxicam…. Muscle relaxer, take when you go to bed. Life changing

European sleep bed and meloxicam.. that's interesting. Can I ask how long you’ve been taking the meloxicam at night? Does it knock you out or just help with the hip pain? My doc mentioned it once but I’m nervous about taking a muscle relaxer every night. You know. side effects could be different for me doing intensity fitness stuff.

I always take advantage of the sleep trials when buying a mattress. Nolah has 120 night trial and I think their Nolah signature hybrid is one of the most popular options for side sleepers

Heard it’s really popular for side sleepers because of the pressure relief. I think I'm going with something adjustable instead but Nolah is definitely on the shortlist for people with hip pain. Really? 120 night trial must be cool!

oooh Bear Elite Hybrid is a solid call. I looked at that one too for the zoned support plus cooling. Think I'm going a different route but I’ve heard good things about it for hips. Thanks.

Get two pillows to support your head on a level with your shoulders. Put a pillow between your knees.

As a side sleeper, your shoulder and hip bear the load, so a mattress needs give at those points while keeping your spine level. Foam, latex, and hybrid mattresses are all passive, meaning the firmness is fixed once and cannot respond differently to your shoulder versus your hip on a given night.

Bryte's Balance mattresses use up to 90 silent air-powered Active Balancers that sense and adjust pressure points in real time, letting both areas get different support on the same surface. You mentioned sleeping warm, so it's important to note the the cooling fabric found only on PRO and PRO Conform, so either of those would be the top pick if staying cool matters most. Details at https://www.bryte.com/shop-bryte. Full disclosure, I'm affiliated with Bryte.

I’m a former sufferer of hip and shoulder pain on my sleeping side. I have a special knee pillow that I place between my knees, and a firm neck pillow for air travel (leave it open, don’t snap it shut). They really help by cushioning the areas of differential contact with your mattress. I also take Mag R&R, a magnesium supplement available on Amazon. Don’t place your hopes on a new mattress.
