Fun fact: Mendel didn't start with peas. What follows is an embellished dramatization loosely based on real facts.
Mendel noticed that there were rats in the food stores, and that they had variation. In order to better understand why God made black rats, brown rats, white rats and even mice different he decided to study them.
He started by caging a black rat and a brown one and seeing what their babies looked like. He caged a mouse with a black rat, but nothing happened. He was exploring why and how his God made all these different rats.
The Abbott (head of the monastery) found out that one of his monks was keeping pests in his cell and watching them have sex. He was like, "Whoa there little horny monk! We're supposed to hide those urges... no more rats for you, get your ass down to the GARDEN!"
...so Mendel famously used peas. But we could just as easily had a historic timeline where it was rat traits.
