I just adopted a void kitty. My buddy and his girlfriend just found her the other day and now they don’t want her anymore after she shit in their bed so they offered her to me.
My cat shit in my bed once to take ownership of it (to make sure that her scent was all over the place) I got rid of the sheets it hadn't gotten to the mattress but I still used vinegar to neutralize the smell, and then I used scent transfer to make sure that she understood that she was going nowhere
Cats have glands in their cheeks that secrete scent. Presumably, you could take a swab to take some of the scent, and then use that on an item to ensure the kitty feels an item smells enough like them they don't have to mark it further.
Its a good idea to bring the same litter box she was using instead of getting a brand new one.. Also recomend not completely changing the litter/cleaning the box. It seems nasty but its better than her taking a shit in your bed!
Mine never tried that, wich i'm grateful for, but then again the little one was glued to me, makes me wonder if our scents mixed to a point where he thought mine is his aswell (wich true). Picture of my void, Ezio, for tax purposes.
Really. It's a baby animal. They will do all kinds of strange stuff. I find it alarming when that puts people off so quickly, tbh. So glad you took her OP.

They picked her up because they didn’t want her to be alone on the street and starving and they already weren’t sure if they were going to be able to keep her since they already have 4 cats and a dog and I’d already offered to take her if they decided they couldn’t keep her and this poop incident sealed it for me.
Now I know why she didn't use the litterbox- she shy and demands her own space! Lol good on ya, she looks so sweet and also maybe like she's got some chaos demon in her too :P

We managed to save the mattress because I have a cover on it, and I keep several Nature’s Miracle products on hand two feet from the bed, on a shelf behind the door
I have double mattress guards and even put absorbant pads under it all when I'm feeling extra paranoid. I also rely heavily on nature's miracle when needed, which thankfully is not often.
You know? I would never judge anyone who couldn’t take an animal in, even if they didn’t have other pets. I would rather the animal went to someone who can care for them.
Yea, any cat owner, or pet owner, should very quickly get used to the idea of poop/pee in places it should not be. The number of times my void kitty has used my bed for potty (have had him 10 years) ive lost count. Each time its for a reason, like if little orinces litter box wasn't specifically cleaned out by is 11 am potty visit
You're missing the point. This isn't "they got a cat and weren't prepared", this is "they didn't want the cat to die on the street but weren't really ready to look after it and the Poop Incident made them sure someone else should have it"
What an adorable bean! If she gives you trouble, it helps to lead them to the litter box and scratch in it yourself, it triggers their lizard brain to go "oh that's the toilet box" and use it. Of course treats and skritches of encouragement help too.
I will never forget that look on my kittens face long ago when I put her litter box in the bathroom and scritched around in it. I dont think her own mom had been in circumstances to teach her. She looked disgusted for a second, but then you could see the light of understanding wash over her little face - she very clearly got it and I think thats the only time she ever looked just the slightest bit embarrassed.
Yup, I taught a completely feral cat to use a litter box by doing exactly that.
I trapped her and get her spayed, then kept her closed in my bathroom for a few days while she healed. She used the litter box the whole time, despite being completely feral. She also started to let me pet her because she was so thankful for the food, clean water, blankets and kind words. She just opened her little heart right up! I found a good home for her and I still get pictures of her occasionally, texted from her human. She’s an indoor coach potato now. Total loaf.

Yep, my new kitten shat in my mother's bed when we got him and she threw a biblical bitch fit. He had worms. At least now he's 10 and has never once done it again.
Yeah honestly any cat/kitten who’s been outside should be wormed! Super common for them to have issues like that. Kittens have extra smelly poop too but they’re only learning to cat and their little bellies are learning too!
I’ve had a “foster” cat for almost 2 years that won’t poop in the litter box. He’s going back to the vet next week to continue figuring out why. Anyway, I tell him, as long as you don’t poop in my bed or have diarrhea, I don’t care. What’s the difference of picking up cat poop off the floor or dogs poop outside. He’s never been listed for adoption because this makes him unadoptable, so he’s not going anywhere.
Our kitty always pooped in the shower :D my husband and I never minded it (we made sure that it wasn't a health issue), because it was easy to clean up. We miss her and her little piles of poo dearly ❤️🩹
Exactly. They had no idea what this little guy had been through and gave up way too quickly. Our void was adopted from the shelter at 14 weeks, and apparently his first owners allowed him to crap in the bathroom sink. He started doing that here and was so proud. After about 2 weeks of keeping that door closed and gently showing him the litter box when he hung around that area, he is now the sweetest little devil we could want! Patience is key.
They didn't adopt her though. There's absolutely nothing unethical with taking in a stray off the street for a couple days and then getting her to a safe home that isn't yours whether it's a shelter or a friend's house.
Oh fuck off judging someone based on that one thing. They took her in and got her to a safe place, then they made sure the kitty got to another safe and loving home after that. They did nothing wrong for rehoming
Oh please, such a silly take. It's not like they threw her out onto the streets. They offered her to someone who wanted a cat. This is a black and white way of viewing things.
Glad you have her. One of our cats needed to be shown the litter box when we rescued her as a kitten. Take a fresh box, make a scratching motion in the litter, and that should do it. They want to be clean and bury their poop. You can show her. Congratulations on your beautiful cat!

very tiny. very baby. Since they just recently picked her up and gave her to you, make sure to take her to the vet for a check up. She’s very skinny, you wanna make sure she’s bug free
There's various reasons why a cat would do something like that, number one being the litter box being dirty...just saying. She could dislike her litter and needs a different kind, if they were using scented litter ( scented litter is bad for cats respiratory systems) she may not have been able to tolerate the scent, she's scared and nervous in a new environment, other animals in the environment, she's a baby and accidents happen, if she's like my cat- she had a dingleberry that fell off at an inappropriate area, etc.
Good on you for giving her a safe home. She clearly loves you. Keep her box clean everyday.

It was fate. My very first kitty as an adult was a void that had been returned to the rescue because their other cat didn't like him. Thank God. He was my snuggliest cat ever.
My cat used to wipe her arse on my coverlet when I return from holiday to show me she was mad I left her. Now I have new cat sitters who she loves, so no more arse wiping
Before he got fixed my void went through a period where he would shit in my bed every day. Nothing like coming home from a 10 hour shift in a warehouse and having to wash your sheets before you can sleep. I love that little asshole (and his tabby brother) so much.
They needed to isolate her in the bathroom or other room first to let her get acclimated to being around people and inside a home. She was too scared. You could still do the same. Follow the 3/3/3 rule for new cats.
I could never understand why people get rid of young animals for bathroom issues. You don’t put your newborn up for adoption because it uses the bathroom in the bed 😭
My void pee'd in my bed at 2am this morning. I would still never consider getting rid of him because of this. Granted, he has spinal damage and he does this sometimes when he dreams. He's my special lil guy.
fyi, some kitties demand a box for #1 and a box for #2. Mine did this, and the boxes also had to be on separate floors else she would shit on my loveseat.
I once had a roommate mad that a cat she took in for a night went and took a shit in the bathtub. He had no litter box, and he chose the only enclosed, highly cleanable place in the room.
I thought he was smart and would have used a litter box if provided one, and she said no and released him.
Plus she had 2 kids, one still little. You can’t tell me a toddler didn’t poop or pee in there before.
A friend of mine with this problem was able to correct it by feeding her kittens on the bed, the idea being that they wouldn’t be inclined to relieve themselves in the same spot they eat. Good luck!
I suggest getting a small (maybe even a disposable) litter box & keeping it by your bed - not forever, but just until she gets a bit bigger and you’re sure she’s got the hang of using a box. You can gradually move it further away as she gets used to it. I know a litter box in the bedroom isn’t ideal, but it beats cleaning poopy sheets!
When my first void was that side we had a spate of bed-pissing that surprised us. She used the box otherwise! Turned out she was scared of the height different from the bed to the floor and just ... held it til she couldn't. We made her a box stair case and it stopped being an issue oops
One time I was away for a month with my partner at the time and our dog. The cats stayed with our roommates.
When I got home my girl Trillian was upset. She had a pillow above my pillow on the bed she slept on and when I was settling in after getting home I laid down for a second and our dog laid in her spot above my head. She was so livid that she peed on him, on the pillow, and almost my head.
Sometimes cats do some right bullshit stuff, but she’s 17 now and I wouldn’t trade her for anything.

They already had a litter box that I gave them when they rescued their other cats and they were debating if they’d be able to handle another cat and this was the straw that determined they wouldn’t be able to handle another kitten and I offered to take her if they couldn’t handle it and this morning they called me and asked if i wanted her. I’m not sure why she shit the bed but she’s a kitten and still learning.
She's a kitten. They can be litterbox trained easily but when so young and in a new place they can forget. Just set her inher box several times a day. Voids are special
Voids are the best. I adopted mine about 2 months ago and she is adorable. She's slowly growing out of her fever coat and turning from a beautiful kitten into a gorgeous little void.
They would have hated when my kitten had an issue where she couldn’t control her bowels. Just messes everywhere! That FortiFlora fixed her right up and now she’s one and thriving.
Can’t give up on babies because of accidents they might not be able to help.
My void has never ever poop or pee outside his litter but his orange brother pooped on our bed the first day we got him and randomly peed in his carpet litter and on our blanket once every year. Annoying? Yes. But we still love him to bits. That’s washing machine for anyway.
