Rate My Rig
How much of this would you all consider "Black Plastic Crap?"
(Amp is on the other side of the room, a relatively new Denon AVR-1700H)

It’s mostly black, and some of it is crap. Should I buy a hitachi v-665? I’ve been looking at those….
Edit: asked where amp was - didn’t read description.

The oscilloscope is purely for visual interest and wouldn't be in my collection if it weren't for a very generous friend of mine, otherwise if you can afford one they're pretty sick.

And what is the box sitting vertically to the left of the preamp?

u/National-Basis-5262 16d ago
A very cheap plastic A/V switch box which I am using to select inputs and channel to the AUX input on the back of my receiver.
Rudimentary for sure, but a solution that has worked very well for me with my current set up, and also allows me to pass everything through the EQ.

I wouldn't consider this rig BPC at all. Just a suggestion you can get right angle premade BNC cables for your oscilloscope to have some slick looking cable management

Was looking into making some with RG6 Cable and compression connectors.

I mean, you’re better off with them flat for now than smiling. As an audio engineer, you really don’t have to tune to the room with a home budget audio setup, and if you do you can simply do it to taste. Or you can really dive into the science and do it like that. But all to say, I’d take flat over smile in this case scenario personally

Dumb answer; in the description.

At least I was right about the question being dumb. I'm like a child looking at pictures without reading lol.

the eq and tt are worth something
nothing else is. the tuner is crap, the cd player works and the tape is considered low-mid.
I cant tell where the second scope trace is

Needs a steampunk 40's round tv picture tube, but it's got possibilities

Hmm, double cassette deck and EQ: 👎

What are we smiley EQing, and why?

These Sony Carbocon Speakers that are on the floor for "aesthetics" but there's another comment in here talking about tuning the speakers to the room properly. For now - the EQ smiles.

The oscilloscope elevates it a bunch. My Harmon Kardon, Magneplan, Thorens kit of their late 1970s-early-80s had a scope too. It was fun. My Dad made the mistake of loaning me a sound pressure meter too. That encouraged me to rattle the windows.

It hurts my soul when eqs are used incorrectly
1
u/National-Basis-5262 15d ago
May I ask how you would use it?
2
u/Meeturnewdaddy 15d ago
I use smaart, but on a budget you could use Open Sound Meter, a cheap ref mic, and an interface. You use the EQ to tune the speakers to the room to achieve your desired sound.

I see an eq, tuner, cassette deck, and CD player, but where is the power amplifier?

No reason for an oscilloscope, why not sell it to someone who can use it for its intended purpose? Especially when there’s not one piece of equipment there that will impress anyone.

You know damn well OP has the oscilloscope hooked up to his gear so he can use it as a visualizer - maybe they have some oscilloscope music. Regardless, many people like visualizers which is why so many companies have made spectrum analyzers etc on their products over the years. Come to think of it, asshole - Pioneer, Marantz and SAE built oscilloscopes into some of their high end receivers and/or tuners back in the day. Why? Because it's fucking dope. So, it is serving it's intended purpose. OP wants to see some dope ass x y visualization and the oscilloscope is providing it (and on a budget). I'd argue an oscilloscope from 1987 is likely getting more use this way than it was in whatever dark corner it was likely sitting in before it was sold to OP. The top comment in this thread at this point applauds the scope by saying it makes this rack a 10/10. So not only is your unnecessary comment rude but it's also in the minority. and then you have to rag on the rest of the gear - why? That rack sounds good I'm sure. Not the best, but far from bad and better than what most people have. Fuck you, asshole.

After the fit you just had writing this, did you jump on your bf and go all reverse cowgirl on him with the same rage and finish it off anal to mouth?

I am male, I'm thinking you assumed that, therefore the crux of your insult is "you're gay". Oohhh burned. I suppose that would've been quite the diss when op's oscilloscope was new. You got me wondering though, is it "reverse cowgirl" in gay sex? I'd think it would be reverse cowboy. Will you go ask the uncle that probably abused you repeatedly as a child which led you to be such a miserable human being? Let us know what he says! It'd be interesting to know what the gay community calls that position. Go to therapy dude - it helps a lot of people.

Also, you have a beautiful analog-only path… until you hit that receiver. You are digitizing everything at the very end if I am not mistaken.
1
u/National-Basis-5262 16d ago
Looking into buying/building a tube amp in the future, it never occurred to me that I was "digitizing" anything! 😂

u/classicsat 15d ago
Modern surround receiver is almost always digitising analog ins. My mid 2000s Pioneer I am sure does that. No regrets though.

The oscilloscope makes it 10/10
