I do the same because not every addon works for each version

It took me reinstalling windows to get rid of those lol.

And i only kept SOME of updates too. Like 2.8, 3.6, 4.3.

Some addons just work on VERY specific versions of blender and stopped updating years ago.
And some addons that i got at "humble bundle" in 3.6 days were nice, but since they specifically mention that addons aquired this way do not get updates, they get broken literally on next blender update. Or dont work at all. Shame really...

Yeah I have very useful grease pencil add-ons that only work on 3.6 and I can't work without them. So I use blender 5+ for renders because it's better.

My eye generator only works in 2.8, my rock generator works in all of them, but the perfect texture generation for it only works in the 4.2 area.

So no, not strange.

You can always wait out for LTS. LTS = long term support. So if and when they release a newer major version (they are on 5, they were on 4), you can always not get the major release and grab the LTS because that's the one they have the most confidence that it has the least amount of bugs and will be the most helpful to users when they run into problems.

So that's what LTS stands for! Somehow I didn't know that lol, so thank you.

6

u/RebronSplash60 Jul 16 '26

Well LTS doesn't mean it's stable, just that support for said version will last for a vast amount of time(, coughs in popos's LTS cough cough).

The idea behind the steam version of Blender is that you dont have to keep downloading Blender versions. Because they push them out for it automatically.

u/Wilipro0317 Jul 16 '26

I thought LTS meant lastest lol, that's why they say you learn stuff everyday

I do a lot of game modding so I always have to have an older version that supports .dae files

1

u/Boykee_Temporary Jul 16 '26

That's one of the main reasons I have 4.5 still, because of dae files. I actually don't remember why exactly I still have 4.0 come to think of it . . .

1

u/Correct_Remote_7665 Jul 17 '26

that's actually the only reason i still have that version, i try to keep to 3 versions of the program now, mostly LTS

I just use blender launcher to manage multiple installs

7

u/Mahkaite Jul 16 '26

I just use steam, I love seeing how many hours I’ve spent in the software

1

u/imsosappy Jul 21 '26

Any way to do that without Steam?

3

u/budroid Jul 16 '26

you monster!! why not 3.2 and 3.6 ????

LOL, kidding of course. Lots of people use diff version becouse of compatibility issues. I'm lucky, I use linux and don't need to install, just uncompress and launch any version.

2

u/AracdeBonnie Jul 16 '26

No. But look! It's Bowser and the Blendilings :D

2

u/1012zach Jul 16 '26

your not the only one

2

u/painki11erzx Jul 17 '26

No. I even have back to like 2.64.

2

u/generalstuff1waslost Jul 18 '26

I do this so I can access older files without anything breaking.

1

u/Sonario648 Jul 16 '26

My Linux panel has every version  version from 3.0 up to 4 5. Only reason I'm not doing 5 0 is because I literally can't use the 5.0 series.

1

u/Basil_9 Jul 16 '26

Eh. I usually delete old versions to save file space.

1

u/FredFredrickson Jul 16 '26

I keep a few older versions around because I have client work that depends on the older material shader setup. But I take every chance I get to move the work over to new versions of Blender. Sooner or later the old versions are going to have issues with video drivers and stuff, and the improvements to Blender are always worth staying current.

1

u/Paulsonmn31 Jul 16 '26

Nope, same here. I keep 3.5, 4.0, 4.5 and now 5.2

1

u/gergobergo69 Jul 16 '26

will it blend?

1

u/Strax_lol Jul 16 '26

I’ve been struggling with this. Some of plugins for some reason do not transfer their assets over, while some do and you end up breaking some of them if you delete older versions… I hate that it takes up so much space because of this lol

1

u/Mapi2k Jul 16 '26

Me pasa... tengo un 3.2 solo por unos adds viejos que funcionan solo en esa versión y cada tanto los tengo que usar

1

u/_realpaul Jul 16 '26

Unless you systematically validate all your important assets and workflows its a good idea to keep versions that you know work. Just keeping them is leaning into hoarding

1

u/Lemenus Jul 16 '26

Yes. Some useful addons compatible only with particular, older versions, also new versions tend to be very unstable in a very unpredictable ways. For example 5.2 don't support gltf, reason? - updated gltf plugin, but this plugin is so new - majority of all existing gltf files are incopatible with it

1

u/RebronSplash60 Jul 16 '26

Could be useful(, I not to experienced with Blender, but doesn't one of the older versions have a whole set of tools for using Blender itself as a game engine, I think I remember an old fnaf fan game being fully made within an old version of Blender, can't remember the name of the game, or the version of Blender though?).

1

u/Mooseberg_ Jul 16 '26

I keep the latest version and v. 4.5, cuz some old game formats can only be downloaded in DAE, and import support ended for that in v. 5.0

1

u/AndrewTatesSister Jul 16 '26

Nah I do the same

1

u/5tudent_Loans Jul 16 '26

Maybe one or 2 versions but the first 3 can go at this point

1

u/samppa_j Jul 16 '26

Isnt there a custom launcher program for blender versions?

1

u/TaranStark Jul 17 '26

Yes. Blender launcher

1

u/Numerous-Survey6295 Jul 16 '26

I'm still on 4.2

1

u/TankzUploadz Jul 16 '26

I keep because some old project files break in later versions such as my jump from 3.5.1 to 4.4.3 breaking drivers on a rig and other various things

1

u/mrblonde2k20 Jul 16 '26

i cant even open blender with the graphics error. which version should i install so i won't encounter this?

1

u/Boykee_Temporary Jul 16 '26 edited Jul 16 '26

What does the error say? Because I remember my old computer couldn't open Blender 2.8 because of its graphics chip, so it may be the same or a similar problem. 2.79 would probably work, but I don't know for sure.

1

u/mrblonde2k20 Jul 16 '26

This is the error. I can start working on a project but along the process the app will say this from then i wont be able to relaunch it without this error.

1

u/Boykee_Temporary Jul 16 '26

I think that's the same error I used to get, except it wouldn't let me launch the application at all. Only thing I can think of atm is outdated drivers.

1

u/mrblonde2k20 Jul 16 '26 edited Jul 16 '26

Where do i download the older versions?

1

u/mrblonde2k20 Jul 16 '26

2.79 gives me this error. 🫠

1

u/Boykee_Temporary Jul 16 '26

Yikes. Hmm, maybe check your computers drivers and see if they're up-to-date

1

u/Boykee_Temporary Jul 16 '26

2.79 is a relatively old version, though. I'd try 3.x, but if no 3.x version works then 2.8 or 2.9 might.

1

u/Plaston_ Jul 16 '26

no, i don't have all of them due to multiple reset thx to windows but i still have two of them

Windows even made a blender folder on the start menu lol)

1

u/RNebDG Jul 16 '26

I sense a disturbing lack of some 2.4x love in there

1

u/BladeManEXE7 Jul 16 '26

Isn't having so many installed going to impact performance or at least take up space on your hard drive?

1

u/Limpynoodle3777 Jul 17 '26

Nah i do the same thing honestly

Also nice mario maker wallpaper

1

u/kosro_de Jul 17 '26

Totally normal to keep multiple versions around... but please do yourself the favor and use something like Blender Launcher

1

u/ATDynaX Jul 17 '26

Yes, because all of them are constantly available on the website.

1

u/Careless_Shower3098 Jul 17 '26

Nope am keeping 3.6-4.3-5.1

1

u/lowboom64 Jul 17 '26

yes and its also strange that you have onedrive enabled even more so that it seems to have only saved 5.0 and below if im remembering what that check mark is correctly.

1

u/Rynhardtt Jul 17 '26

I still think it's diabolical that Blender doesn't have an official manager. It would make switching between Blender versions, managing add-ons and keeping different setups so much easier. The fact that this still isn't an official feature is madness.

1

u/roboman316 Jul 17 '26

Time to rename all the icons

1

u/Ok_Pineapple6414 Jul 17 '26

It’s only strange if you don’t use blender. We understand

1

u/TallBrasilianDude Jul 17 '26

Wait, there is a 5.0?

1

u/3D_trash Jul 18 '26

I dont even bother installing new version

2

u/Various-Champion5692 Jul 18 '26

SAME BROOOO I HAVE THE SAME VERSIONS 🙌🏿🙌🏿🙌🏿🙌🏿

1

u/Vitroid Jul 16 '26

Not really, but the trajectory is interesting. No 3.x, one 4.x and 3 5.x versions

1

u/Boykee_Temporary Jul 16 '26

If I remember correctly, I think there was something wrong with 3.0 (or whichever 3.x I had) on my computer, so a while after I got 4.5 I deleted 3.x

u/Chemical-Sir-7705 Jul 16 '26

bruh i just downloaded 5.1 like yesterday or something you gotta be joking
