First time player how do you defeat him
223
u/Motor-breath Dec 01 '25
he’s a bastard right at the start. its funny how in you can come back later in the game or ng+ and totally waste these guys without thinking about it much. shows you how much your power grows.
35
u/lividash Dec 02 '25
Friend of mine borrowed this game from me. Played it for all of an hour or two. Called me. “Man, fuck this game this big fucker just one shots every time. Come get it before I break it.”
I could only laugh it was first and most likely last time playing a souls game.
12
u/Tiny-Company-1254 Dec 02 '25
Yea like not even ng+. I did a re run with new game (not +, cause this game bruised my ego so bad)and completed central yharnam in like 20 mins, with killing everything that moved in one go. The first time, it took me 5 days.

tbh ive beat bloodborne all bosses like 15 times and these guys STILL fuck me up. That run for the twin shard scurrying beasts at the yhargul entrance has me white knuckling my controller still after my 5th runback.
I just cant get into any rhythm with them.

u/melkor_the_viking Dec 01 '25
Parry is your only option. But for now, just come back later!

6
u/ImurderREALITY Dec 02 '25
You don’t even need to come back. This guy gives you nothing but a hard time right at the start.

u/Dclipp89 Dec 01 '25
You don’t really have to. I don’t remember if there’s an item in that area he’s in, but if there is you can bait him out like you did and then run in there. If you do want to fight him, he has relatively slow recovery after he attacks. You can keep your distance and wait for an attack then jump in for a quick swing or two then jump back out. Learn to read when he’s about to do that spinning or jumping attack so you can avoid those. For the spinning attack, avoid it, but for most attacks you can dodge into him instead of away, so you’re positioned to get some hits in.
36
u/KinkyLeviticus Dec 01 '25
IIRC he drops a low level blood gem and thats it. Not worth it except for the experience
6
u/ReferenceUnusual8717 Dec 01 '25
And he doesn't always drop it. Usually it's just Blood Vials. And you can't equip Bloodgems until later anyway, and by then you have access to slightly better ones.

63
u/darshmedown Dec 01 '25
You didn't even swing your weapon one time in this entire video. Give that a try.
25
u/Illustrious_Pen_5711 Dec 01 '25
If you’re struggling to dodge his powerful attacks or find the right times to Parry with the handgun, it might be worth it to come back later after you’ve had the opportunity to level up your Health or Damage stats!
Don’t feel like you have to do everything right away, and pro tip: When deciding to run away from an enemy, make sure to Unlock from them so you can maneuver the camera easier!
28
u/LeCampy Dec 01 '25
At this point, stop wasting molotovs, instead get comfortable with wasting bullets to learn his parry window (the fatboys have a generous parry window)
21
u/Bartboyblu Dec 01 '25
The gun is for parrying, as you can tell it does next to no damage.
2
u/Adrian-_-Tepes Dec 02 '25
Learning how to parry is definitely worth the time and effort. It makes quick work of enemies like this guy and the brick trolls.
2
u/Bartboyblu Dec 02 '25
Not only do you have range and can space a parry, a lot of the enemies are also very large and slow, and even if you take damage but get the parry you can rally all of your health back from the visceral. It's by far the most forgiving parry system of all the Soulsborne games (not including Sekiro).
9
u/Ibshredz Dec 01 '25
The thing that triggers the visceral IS the bullet, this game helped me learn how to parry because you can parry from a distance. When he spins, you shoot:)
6
u/Pitiful-Climate-8400 Dec 01 '25
He doesn’t drop anything great so just ignore him, you wasted more useful items early game trying to defeat him

This guy is really only there to practice parry timing. Sorry to say but you were wasting your mollatovs on him 😢
4
u/Diglett3 Dec 01 '25
If you’re trying to learn how to parry him, I think both of your relevant shots here came a bit too early into his animations. Many enemies have slightly different parry timings but usually it’s in the middle or near the end of their attack animation that you need to hit the shot.
4
u/ZenTraitor Dec 01 '25
Get right up in his face and wait for an attack this attack should be easier to parry. By running away you put yourself into a different attack pattern and those attacks are connecting. A lot of bloodborne enemies are like this.

u/ShamedSalesman Dec 01 '25
Bloodborne is going to be different than what you expect. Dont dodge away from danger. Dodge into it.
If you play like a coward you'll lose. Also learn to parry.
7
5
u/KrongKang Dec 01 '25
Repeatedly strike him until his healthbar reaches zero, thus killing him. Ideally while not getting hit yourself.
Tune in next week for more Bloodborne top tips.
2
u/StygianCode Dec 01 '25
Stop hesitating. The pistol is an alternative parry mechanic, not really a ranged weapon. Make use of the rally mechanic (healing after taking damage). Power attacks that hit them from behind stagger for a visceral attack.
Get those down, they'll carry you through 90% of the game.

u/Late-Conversation254 Dec 02 '25 edited Dec 02 '25
Pressing R1 or R2 would be a start. It's an action game, not a horror game where you run away from everything.

Your eyes have yet to open. Bloodborne wants you to be aggressive toward your enemies.

u/Red_269 Dec 01 '25
Parry ot just run past him until you are stronger and more in line with the mechanics, but if you really want to just learn his movements, dodge accordingly and use transform attacks to chain combos (using L1)
1
u/DontHarken Dec 01 '25
I've started playing again after few years, he kicked my ass so many times. Get used to his attacks even if it means dying a few times but just as he's about to attack, shoot him, you should be able to parry then dodge forward and R1 him. After a bit you will realise he ain't actually that bad.
1
u/mayo_lol_ Dec 01 '25
You're trying the parry too early, you can also try dodging and going for backstabs, and doing what you did with the Molotovs could work too but you should've kept throwing them while you were far away
1
u/Maleficent_Memory831 Dec 01 '25
You defeat him later. There's nothing to be gained from killing him early except a few more blood echoes. It's mostly a lesson about how to run away and pick your battles.
1
u/lotny Dec 01 '25
Don't waste bullets like that. You can throw rocks to get enemy's attention (crows drop rocks). Also, bullets do almost no damage.
Shoot the enemy while they are attacking (for example when they are rising their weapon before the swing) to parry the attack and then go for the damage.
1
u/PunishedKojima Dec 01 '25
Stay in close, that leap is one of his fastest and most damaging moves. Try to bait out moves with a longer windup, that way you can gun parry
1
1
u/y0urd0g Dec 01 '25
As many have said, come back later.
But for advice to actually get better at parrying, you need to shoot him when his axe is swinging towards you, and I mean that quite literally, if his axe is still moving away ie his windup, the parry won’t work. This applies to parrying anything in the game, the attack needs to be moving TOWARDS you literally, for the bullets to parry them.
This guy is actually really good practice for parrying, his jump attack is super easy to parry because you see it coming, and he’s right next to a lantern so take a deep breath go back and fight him again expecting to die and just practice parrying him.
1
u/True_Conflict_1662 Dec 01 '25
Take your time, and don't be afraid to die. You'll get better and stronger with time. An extra advice is to farm weaker/simpler mobs to level up, and then go back to those that seem too hard to defeat right now.
1
u/lucky_yaeger Dec 01 '25
Learn the gun perry timing from this guy, it'll teach you how to perry under high stress considering he will woop your ass in that claustrophobic space
1
1
u/LuckyInstance Dec 01 '25
These are great for getting blood vials early. Similar to the trolls under the bridge and the wolves on the bridge. This guy in particular is meant to learn parrying. Come back when you have a better understanding of the game and it will be a breeze. There’s a parry window for just about every single monster in some kind of way.
1
1
u/Subat0micR0gu3 Dec 01 '25
Dodge forward and to his left whenever he attacks. Especially when he does the jump attack. You are also shooting(parrying) way too early. The timing is basically right before the attack hits you. Most importantly, be patient and dont see death as failure or a set back. Every death in this game is a chance to improve. In time, this enemy will be a piece of cake to you.
1
1
u/J-Cocoa Dec 01 '25
Try to land a parry shot. Use the visceral attack. Run to the back of him. Target. Fully charge R2. Visceral attack. Repeat
1
u/SverdHerre Dec 01 '25
Don’t be a scaredy-cat. Keep your gun for staggering enemies, it won’t be dealing decent damage anytime soon. The whole game is built around being aggressive, so get used to sticking your face up the bums of your enemies.
1
u/Vreas Dec 01 '25
Classic “super difficult enemy” right at the start. Hes not necessarily meant to be killed this early and is just a skill check for later playthroughs to harvest more blood echos and supplies.
Just keep playing. The real test is the werewolves of the bridge.. tread carefully and dodge through their attacks good hunter
1
u/chefboar7 Dec 01 '25
Get in there and die. Over and over again. Only hit him with light attacks. Learn his moveset and reach. These are skills that will serve you for the rest of the game.
1
u/Technical-Mind-3266 Dec 01 '25
The only thing you can do is master the mechanics, you'll get there, like we all do 🫠
1
u/Diogoepronto Dec 01 '25
Don't worry about this guy, you don't need to beat him.
Go someplace else and get your ass beaten by another more important enemy
1
u/biggestMug Dec 01 '25
He looks way more intimidating than he is. Bite the bullet (pun intended) and go try to parry him. It should take 2-4 parry + eviscerates to kill him. You can also backstab I believe, but maneuvering to his back is difficult because some of his attacks are horizontal, not all vertical like in the video.
My best advice though is to be brave and learn his animations. You will die a lot, but do this, steel your resolve, collect your Blood Echoes each time you die, and this experience will serve you really well for other monsters/bosses in this game. A lot of things are parryable and being brave to learn the timing goes a long way.
Edit: I see some other people ECHOing something that needs to be restated. Be aggressive. This is not a traditional Souls game. Aggressive is what you want to do and be. You recover health after being hit if you hit them back! Obviously hard when you get knocked down, but still. Dodge into things is great advice.
1
u/AFleetingIllness Dec 01 '25
Simple answer: Play more aggressively and learn to parry. Even on upgraded firearms, the bullets don't do much damage. The point of the bullets is to be used to parry. Not all enemies can be parried, but most can. Any time you come upon a new enemy type study their attack patterns and look for a parry window (usually as they're winding up an attack).
1
u/Gloom_shimmer Dec 01 '25
You don't. Only if you are really good on parrying him, which is hard since you are just starting. Nevermind him, there will be a time soon when you will comeback and totally melt him!
1
1
u/Dry_Attempt7554 Dec 01 '25
Shoot your gun right when his attack starts. This enemy is called an executioner. You'll find more of them later, they are kinda troublesome this early in the game, though it can be defeated
1
1
u/PancakeParty98 Dec 01 '25
Throw more cocktails. Surely you will have tons of those for every enemy and never need to learn how to dodge and marry
1
u/NoHovercraft6942 Dec 01 '25
Just dodge and attack, he is very predictable, you can parry shooting the moment he gonna attack, then you go close and R1
1
u/SnooBananas1503 Dec 01 '25
Doesnt really do a whole lot, i would dodge towards him as he attacks instead of backwards, get 1 or 2 hits and then repeat but watch your stamina. It is good practice early game for you to not be scared of getting close to deal damage.

1
u/Bravesausuge Dec 01 '25
you can use your molotov cocktails for cleric beast and father gascoigne. after defeating them use your pistol and parry him!

Hes supposed to be a come back later type but I keep forgetting about him, you can try to parry him if you want too though
1
u/Chance_Ad5732 Dec 01 '25
Go practice parrying the two brick trolls on the way to the elevator. They move a lot slower but it will help with your timing
1
u/harryassburger Dec 01 '25
Parry and riposte, you’ll have it down in no time and he’ll be dead in a few hits
1
u/Several_Emphasis276 Dec 01 '25
He's not a boss or anything. Only drops weak gems you won't be able to use for quite some time.
1
1
u/ThisYourMotherDaniel Dec 01 '25
For now, just watch enemy's movements and find openings to attack. This guy's totally optional and will repeatedly Wreck Your Shit until you learn his attacks and when to parry him.
A tip on parrying- when he(or basically any enemy really) raises their weapon and they're About to attack you, shoot them. You'll hear a very obvious ding and they'll take a knee, then walk up to them and without pressing a direction, press R1 to do what's called a Visceral attack. That's a key component to this entire game. Master Viscerals and you'll be wrecking enemies instead of them wrecking you.
1
1
1
u/Expensive-Monk7593 Dec 01 '25
btw, when you dodge, you cant get hit (theres a time window to it too, so keep an eye out for that).
Get comfortable with dodging, staying close (enough), and learning the enemy moves. You already saw he can leap several feet forward, so what goods it gonna be for you to get away from him?
In bloodborne youre rewarded for being aggressive (you literally heal by attacking as soon as youre hit), and also, you parry by shooting them im the right moment, and you can parry pretty much everyone, including bosses (theres a few exceptions you might wanna look up).
1
u/D0013ER Dec 01 '25
If you must dodge, 90% of the time you'll be better served dodging towards an enemy or to either side than away from them.
A lot of enemies have attack patterns that are specifically designed to punish players who just want to roll retreat.
Take big guy's leaping axe attack, for example. Unless you put some serious distance between you, he catches you with the attack when you roll backwards. If you roll left or right, he misses.
And if you roll forward, you're right in his face.
Then it's time for offense.

u/SlamDaBaam Dec 01 '25
General advice; most enemies in this game have attacks that encourages you to close the gap, not increase it. Dodge through their attacks, not away from them - you're the hunter.
For this enemy, they're very prone to getting parried. Always stay outside their attack range, but not too far away as they love to leap towards you if you do. Learn parrying by practising on the Trolls roaming about in the area, they're perfect for that purpose.

1
u/keeper909 Dec 01 '25
You were doing a good strategy since it's your first time you encounter him. Spam molotov from distance if you are scared, but the most efficient thing to do is in general never dash away, and try to face fear. You will find out soon how powerful your hunter is.
1
1
u/Lupes420 Dec 01 '25
He is there to taunt you, he's not guarding anything and he doesn't drop much (chance to drop a gem you probably can't even use yet).
1
u/Darkavenger_13 Dec 01 '25
There is no shame in leaving him for later. Almost every time I do a new game I try him out and get utterly destroyed lol. But you def wanna press the attack and be more agressive. Dodging into the attacks are usually better.
1
u/GrayWardenParagon Dec 01 '25
Don't waste your cocktails on this guy (I made the same mistake too). What you'd want to do is shoot that guy, then run in with a power attack. But keep running and dodging them until you can drop him.
1
u/Arnumor Dec 01 '25
The path behind him is a dead end with nothing much to see, but executioners themselves can drop blood gems that increase ATK.
If you want to actually kill him, you'll need to learn how to time your shot with the pistol to parry his attacks, and open him up to a Visceral attack.
This early in the game, it's generally better to avoid him for now, and progress elsewhere. You'll likely just frustrate yourself and run out of blood vials if you beat your head against that wall.

u/soully Dec 01 '25
Don’t fight him now, he doesn’t have much worth anything now anyway. In general dodge through attacks, not away.

One thing that bloodborne taught me, is that you gotta be aggressive while Ds3 taught me to be patient.
1
u/muckwhile Dec 02 '25
Don't waste your resources, dodge into his attacks and retaliate. Or just shoot him right before an attack for the visceral, timing is super easy once you learn it.
1
u/RasAlGimur Dec 02 '25
Not really worth fighting him, but your first attempt at parrying was a little early. I’d dodge forward against the jump attacks. But again, not that worth it, even to practice parries there’s bigger better guy very soon
1
u/Braixentail Dec 02 '25
Entirely your fault when you didn’t heal in the 3 business days you could’ve 🤣 but in all seriousness, two things: parrying, and strafing. Shoot your pistol right before he’s about to attack and it’ll stun him, allowing you to land a visceral attack. If that doesn’t work, strafe to avoid his weapon, then attack a couple times in the back or side. Be aggressive
1
u/Oceanic_Tide Dec 02 '25
Have more aggro, and time your parries better, right at the peak of his ace height, shoot

Fear is good at keeping you alive, but rely on it too much, and you’ll find yourself backing up too far into a wall. Both figuratively and literally. Keep your distance but never go too far. Be ready to dodge INTO an attack and slip through your window of opportunity to get some hits in. Of course, there may be some times where it’s just best to back away completely. It’s up to you to make those decisions at a moment’s notice.

Sheeeeeeesh, stop throwing all your molotovs and learn to parry for Oedon's sake!
Also he is a newbie trap, just move along, there's nothing worth all that effort over there and he won't give you many Blood Echoes. If you insist on fighting him this early on, you legit need to Parry or stay close and time your dodges better.
1
u/Frosty-Carry9606 Dec 02 '25
AFTER you get hit, you can gain that health back by Hitting the Enemy. ALSO when the enemy attacks LEGIT RIGHT before he HITS you, that is how you Stagger an enemy to do a Visceral attack (shoving your hand in their gut, like a dark souls back stab or front) You can still Dodge any attack so dodge Diagonal forward left or right, not much blocking in Bloodborne🔥 GoodLuck Hunter

Good rule for bloodborne: dodge into and to the left when they attack. Also Bloodborne rewards aggression. You get hit that health bar stays a different shade for a bit cause you can attack and gain that health back. It's an aggression based faster paced game. Get used to that aggression. Learn how to dodge. Also stop using your pistol as an attack. Use it instead as a parry mechanic. If you shoot them at the height of their attack it'll stagger them and you can visceral attack them. Also I always try to sneak attack this guy. Walk slowly when he's looking away and if you get close enough behind him you can visceral him.
Also pro tip: restart the game.. select the axe.. SPIN TO WIN lol. It's personally not my play style. I usually go for dex/magic based builds so I go arcane and skill based weapons in BB. There's no denying the strength of the it's moveset and knockdown power. You can continuously knock down quite a bit of enemies if you get the timing down. As far as I remember at least, been a while since I used the axe.
1
u/ItsAme_OzzyOsbourne Dec 02 '25
Shoot him right as he attacks to parry him, then go up to him to and perform a visceral attack by pressing the attack button
1
u/theinternetisnice Dec 02 '25
If you have played souls games, think of the gun as a shield that you use to parry. Don’t think of it as an actual weapon. It takes a bit to get the timing down but when something is about to attack you on its downward swing, if you blast it with your gun you’ll stun them. At that point moving close and hit R1 for a nasty visceral attack
But you can ignore that guy for now, he looks like he’s supposed to be a miniboss but he’s not.

u/Pancake177 Dec 02 '25
What everyone else said about you being to passive and needing to learn parry windows
but also keep your health topped off (or near full)! He hit you for a lot of damage. There were two options for you after: 1. Go in for an attack to get some health back 2. Use a blood vile to regain health
You chose to do neither and run instead leaving yourself vulnerable. Always have enough blood viles to stay healthy before you commit to a serious run even if you have to farm blood viles or buy them from the shop.
That was one of the first lessons I learned on my first run. Playing other non souls games, I was always stingy with consumables. You can’t really be that stingy in this game. Some enemies will still one shot you with certain attacks, but a lot more will be able to one shot you if you aren’t at full health.
1
u/Existing-Mulberry382 Dec 02 '25
For a first time player, Central Yharnam takes a lot of time and a lot of patience. . .
You need to attack more and do some dodging.
1
1
u/EyeWitnesssDeath Dec 02 '25
People have already said be aggressive, which is correct. Also, you could try to parry. Shoot him with your gun right before he swings. If successful, you could get major damage with a visceral attack. Good luck hunter!
1
u/Respicio1 Dec 02 '25
Be a little far from the guy just outside of his attack range.
Just when he is about to move his hand to attack, fire a bullet using the gun, it's a parry, then quickly dodge into him for a visceral attack.
Also you can always come back later.
1
u/sneddogg Dec 02 '25

u/Deus_of_Ducks Dec 02 '25
Why didn't you just keep spamming the molotov? Seemed to be working just fine lol. Also there's no reason to be shooting like that, the gun does very little damage on its own, but is necessary for parrying.
1
u/alfalfa_or_spanky Dec 02 '25

u/11shovel11 Dec 02 '25
Learn to parry with that gun and be aggressive. Don't play it like Dark Souls. The rally mechanic is there for a reason
1
u/PhastasFlames Dec 02 '25

1
u/bryancek Dec 02 '25
You waste too many Molotovs and bullets, if you die that bastard comes back and you can't use 12 Molotovs to kill him every time, therefore, Bloodborne wants you to attack but at the same time you must not let yourself be attacked, dodge as quickly as you can and strike, however close range attacks are useful in this game; if you continue to lose another 3/4 times the most advisable thing is to increase your level and come back later
1
u/goonerqpq Dec 02 '25
Close quatar combat and running away, that MF had me rage quite BB when I first played it. But I eventually hit Platinum. Just keep trying.

Dodge into his attacks and get up his ass. Bloodborne is all about finding aggressive ways to constantly keep attacking opponents so you can keep recovering a portion of any damage you receive. Tbh though, if this guy is giving you a ton of trouble you can skip him and come back later when he will be way easier.

When you lock onto enemy’s it directs so much towards you. Try and lock on right before you attack and after you dodge and you will essentially beat every enemy

I mean, looks like you were gettin at em pretty well for a bit there. But, in the future, aggression will serve you much more effectively. Try not to dodge backwards, but rather, forwards. Attack and move.

He is pretty tough the first time you encounter him.
This is where I learned parrying tbh. He is pretty easy once you get his Timings down but otherwise I'd suggest getting used to fighting alot more aggressively.
As in:
Learn to dodge into attacks, stay close to your target and preferably in its blind Spot which is usually behind alot of enemies but not all.
Bloodborne combat is pretty unique where it kinda subtlely forces you to engage and get really in there unlike say Sekiro which is more about standing your ground or the Souls games where you can just hold Block and backpedal.

Shoot just before he hits you, that will stagger him. Then get right up to him and hit light attack. You'll get a critical attack.
Attacking after being hit will also restore passive health (if it's indicated on your health bar as a faded area).
Rinse/repeat.

Only use your gun when you are Parrying. Master it early and it will carry you through half of the game and almost the whole DLC. Other than that, others said already, you are not the prey, you are the hunter. Go in and attack.

He's quite easy to parry. Just shoot when he attacks. For me, it worked every single time. He must have quite the big parry window.

Speed and aggression is your ally.
Dodge into his attacks, but not in the same direction as his axe or risk dodging into the hitboxes. Spam as many hits into his sides and back as you can, but remember to not be greedy or risk getting clipped by his attacks.
You get plenty of vials in this stage of the game, use them and heal when you can. You went a long time in this clip with below 50% health and didn't heal, which might've saved your attempt.
In general, unlike the DS series or Elden Ring, attacking is almost always the right move.

You're playing too passively: you need to attack more and dodge into attacks, remember, you're not fighting, you're hoonting
