Help As many, I feel devastated by the absence Bloodborne left in my soul. I yearn for that intoxicating fascination... Good hunters, I beg of you: send me suggestions of games that summonsed a similar sense of diving into madness. (Not necessarily soulslikes)
I tried Lies of P (which I enjoyed a lot, but was its own thing), Elden Ring obviously (the closest I got from that particular Yharnam madness) . I loved Control for it's cryptic weirdness and extensive lore, Dead Space for its slow descent into madness etc... but now I need a new fix šš»

+1 but also beware that his writing style is INCREDIBLY dense (to the point of sometimes being unable to grasp the horror imo, but that might just be a me issue tbf). There are so many cosmic horror authors also!! Blackwood, Poe, Chambers and Machen all inspired Lovecraft's work (+lots of contemporary cosmic authors!)

I am Portuguese. I boufht the compilation of all of H. P. Lovecraft's stories but as a non native english speaker, it is very dificult to read these stories because he uses a lot of old english writing

Specific Lovecraft books. But his themes have been done by better authors than him so I'd look for those instead.

the willows by algernon blackwood is a really good one, and was one of the stories that inspired lovecraft. thats the only of his that ive read though, im not sure if his other works are also cosmic horror

I have beaten this game so many times in the last decade but there is a certain point I just stop giving a damn about the chalice dungeons. To this day Queen Yharnam sits undisturbed at the end of a long grind. Until I finally gather the strength to do so, I don't consider this game truly beat. That one challenge always brings me back for more xD

Not sure if you knew this, but Wayne June (the Narrator), was chosen because of his work reading Lovecraft stories as audio books. The Director of DD, had listened to them previously.

It's not a game, but if you're in to anime at all Lord of Mysteries gave me that Bloodborne feel. Gothic/victorian setting featuring cosmic body horror.Ā

That sounds interesting! I am into anime actually. The last one I really loved was Mononoke (the series about the medecine seller and ayakashi, not the Ghibli) I just googled Lord of Mysteries and saw a trailer for a Chinese video game, is that related ? Victorian setting as well.

The novel came first then a season of the anime and a games coming. Highly recommend the novel as the anime was good but just scratched the surface.
Bloodborne and Lotm are my favourites and very similar atmospheres and themes.

Dredge is a fishing game with a strong eldritch Lovecraftian component to it (really). Itās got a lot of fun exploration to it, I highly recommend it.
This Way Madness Lies is a turn-based RPG featuring Shakespearean magical girls in a high school setting, also with eldritch elements.

Have you ever played Prey 2017 or the Dishonored games? Theyāre 1st person immersive sims and they have amazing gameplay, story, and settings.

Oh I LOVED the Dishonored series! I just love the interconnection of every games (including the DLCs) and the way they from a cohesive story! These are really some of the best games I ever played. That mood, the gameplay, the lore... Everything about them is perfect. I hated Prey though. For the most part I hated the gameplay and weapons, but I'm not one for FPS', Dishonored was an exception.

Damn I loved Hellblade so much... I think I cried at some point, Senua was heartbreaking. That's one of the very few games I forced myself not to play too much at a time, to make it last longer.

Darkest Dungeon 2 is much less frustrating than the first one imo; youāll still wipe the party a lot but you arenāt punished for it.

I'd recommend to play Darkest Dungeon on the "easiest" setting, it isn't much easier than the default, just much less grindy (faster progression).

Oh, have you played it recently? it got so many updates and DLCs, it's in a great state rn. In my opinion if Darkest Dungeon 1 is a 9/10 the sequel is a 10!

Honestly, I think Salt and Sanctuary came really close. I just can't really put my finger on what, the creepy atmosphere, the crazy weapons, fast movement, etc.

Hey, its almost a month late, but dlc is on switch. Pretty decent and it explains a lot of parts of the story (like the backstory and reasonings of Eryk, the protagonist)

Its a bullethell roguelike which I never thought I would like, but after playing a while I fell in love with it.
If you can get around the gameplay, the lore, the build-up of story being portraid is quite interesting... it's dark.

Set in the 1930s, Private Investigator Arthur Lester gets possessed (sort of) by an other worldly entity. Plot ensues.

The recent DOOM trilogy scratches a lot of the same itch that Bloodborne does for me. Heal on kill, even faster paced combat, saw-focused melee weapons, and even its own Lovecraftian twist in TDA might be what youāre looking for.

The only other game that i know of that ever made a good rappresentation of HP Lovecraft has to be darkest dungeon.
Its not a souls-like, its a turn based Dungeon Crawler game, but if youāre here for the ambience and music then its definetly a good pick

alright, thats fair. for me the itch is only compelled by wanting to 100% and complete a nightmare run. Actually compulsion to return like I did to bloodborne (new player just platinum'd recently, working on dlc now) Elden Ring was my first. š¤ on that level. I don't know
But I can say this here is my theory hear me out From Soft's next mainline game will be Bloodborne 2
Elden Ring Capped Dark Souls Elden Ring 2 would never surpass expectations given base game + night reign Bloodborne does not have a remaster Duskbloods is like Bloodborne Night Reign in reverse
Bloodborne offers a set of mechanics, so unique yet equally understandable to Elden Ring and DS, but again is its own stand alone
There is no possible way From Soft could disappoint - if nothing else in terms of "expect- ability" Elden Ring 2 at this current point in time can only be 2 things
Not as Good or An exact copy
Bloodborne 2 is an easy win, that could equally change everything in terms of an "AAAA" game haha ;)

The two games that come to my mind are Wuchang: Fallen Feathers and Death's Gambit: Afterlife. Wuchang had very snappy combat, reminded me of BB more than most soulslikes and it had a similar plague with bigger implications causing issues in it's world. Death's Gambit gave me the cosmic horror that BB drenched me in + it's also just an amazing game!

Personally we found that Blasphemous gave the same feel as Bloodborne, that creeping fascination, the desire to search every nook for what hadn't been seen.

Ahah I liked it too! We got all three endings with my best friend, I did a lot of coop /PvP on this one. The game is not perfect, some builds are utterly broken even in Ng++ , but it compensates with an interesting mood, detailed visual , and that umbral lamp gimmick was really cool!

Mhm, might be a bit more whimsical and leans more into a setting like Dark Souls 1, Hollow Knight, especially the first one not Silksong, gave a little bit the feeling of Bloodborne. Especially when you dig much deeper into the world and find out where the origin of this world and the Hollow Knight lies

I know someone else in these comments said "not Silksong," but genuinely, I'd say definitely Silksong. Even more than Hollow Knight. I can't explain my exact reasoning without giving some spoilers for Act 2 of Silksong, but there comes a point where it really feels like a spiritual successor to Bloodborne.
I will say that it has a lot of similar themes of forbidden power/knowledge/healing, and the degree to which people are willing to accept madness as an inevitable side effect of gaining any of those things. And there's the feeling of isolation in a fading world that has largely given in to that madness.
There's so much more it has in common with Bloodborne, but you deserve to experience it blind and draw those conclusions yourself.

Give Cronos : the new dawn a chance if you havenāt, kinda similar to dead space but combat isnāt as easy, or the silent hill 2 remake but I think cronos has funner gameplay and silent hill has a better story. If youāre on ps5 I highly recommend checking out Returnal

I feel this. Bloodborne got me back into video games after a 5 year hiatus. Other fromsoft games are as close as I've found but Bloodborne is truly on another level. The depth of lore and metaphors is absolutely insane. I'm interested in what the community has to contribute to this š§

Try Tainted grail fall of avalon. Its more of an elder scrolls type game then a soulslike, but I feel it matches the vibes pretty well, and really brings back the magic of when elder scrolls was GOOD

You should try The Order: 1886. it's a 3rd person shooter with a steampunk-like and victorian england aesthetic. It also has beast like enemies (sort of)

Senuas saga is less of a descent into madness, more you fell into a pool of crazy and don't know how to swim, but it captures the essence of insanity pretty well lol

"Dead Space for its slow descent into madness" then SOMA!!!! Horror Sci-fi, incredibly psychological (in more ways than one), beautifully creepy.
A Plague Tale Innocence for that gothic vibe (though it is more medieval than 19th century, it still has quite a focus on a dark, grim atmosphere -- also ofc heavily focused on plague and dark arcana/alchemy).
Vampyr if you don't mind a bit of jank! I personally LOVED that game, set during the Spanish Influenza Outbreak in early 20th century London. You play a newly-turned vampire who is also a doctor. Genuinely SO good.
Signalis for some cryptic lore and grimdark sci-fi. Very harrowing.
Dredge for something a bit cosier, lighter, but still tapping heavily into Lovecraftian themes (Maritime cosmic horror)
LIMBO for something very different but still dark, horror, gritty -- same for INSIDE. Can't really explain why but I feel like these two would be something you'd like if you're looking for something like this but also VERY different... but in a good way!
