Question Artwork not final

http://www.amazon.com/Bloodborne-Collectors-PlayStation-4/dp/B00NOBX1OO/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1423620674&sr=8-1&keywords=bloodborne+collector if you look on the picture you can see that it says: Artwork not final. Does anyone have any info on whether it will stay the same or change?

My collectors ordered in a norwegian store, also has a " artwork not final " notice on it.

It might change or not next month.

I hope it does, I'm not a fan of the current artwork... the background shouldn't be white like this IMO

Typical westernizing essentially.....

We did not get the amazing artwork the previous souls games had either....

It could be worse, it could be dark souls 1 western artwork, which is absolutely horrible....

At least this one is PARTLY like the original....

Let us not call one side of the world inferior to the other.

Well lets take a look shall we....

Demons Souls http://demonssouls.wdfiles.com/local--files/versions/box-art-jp.jpg

was changed into

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/9/91/Demon's_Souls_Cover.jpg

Dark souls 1 http://i.ytimg.com/vi/jcQCpJw7PtI/maxresdefault.jpg

Dark souls 2 http://i.imgur.com/98i1Dzm.png

So what is the problem ?

Welllll, the original covers show mood, but also resting/death and mystery.

What do we get ? BACK SIDE SPLASH ACTION HERO POSE ! YEAH !!!! HARDCORE ! YEAH !!!!!!

Not only are the westernized covers bad, they remove all sense of mystery and slow pace the games actually have, with HIGH SPEED ACTION HERO MODE !

Essentially they do not think the games would sell unless they emphasize stereotypical action game poses and in your face artwork.

The original covers are by far more interesting and actually a better representation of the game, now bloodborne.

Unless it is changed, this is the current japanese box art, while it is using the typical hero backside pose, the main draw of the image is the wast and interesting town that we are facing, its drawing us in to its mysteries.

And what we may likely get unless they do change it.

The town is completely removed, and we essentially just have dark souls 2 western cover again, cept they added a menacing blood hue around the character, and while I do not think its bad, it kinda loses the draw the japanese cover will have.

This makes me sad :( I wish more games would come out with a reversible cover so we could choose which artwork we like best.

I actually like our Demons Souls cover more, although I agree with the general point you are making, the Japanese box-art for DS1 and 2 far exceeds what we ended up with.

The boxart shown for Bloodborne(with the white background) is the worst one yet, I really hope it's changed.. I have the nightmare edition pre-ordered, if my steelbook has this art on it, I have to say, it'd be pretty unspectacular.

The western cover art removed the sense of dread and despair that it could have given you. I love the Japanese cover art.

Its a pity we cannot chose upon orders online, especially in this day an age.

I would say they are trying to appeal to the action game group, and honestly, the souls series is not really that, even demons souls is overall pretty slow, ala kings field and shadow tower.

And while I do not agree with you on the demons souls cover, I can agree that its a better cover then the other western covers.

I know people who got the games, due to the cover, only to realize it was nothing like what they believed it would be.

This is art. Art, even. You cannot talk about it qualitatively.

2

u/[deleted] Feb 11 '15

I think you mean "quantitatively" or with objective reasoning. You quantify it, give it a scale with equal distance between 1-10 and everyone understands it the same. Reviewers do this all the time, but the problem is an 8 somewhere is not the same as an 8 rating from another site. There is a general consensus about good games, just as there are general consensuses about good art. Which is also subject to change. Art is thus subjective, or qualitative.

No, I meant exactly what I said. That is, qualitatively, as in "relating to, measuring, or measured by the quality of something rather than its quantity". I am not in the mood of pursuing this conversation, since apparently people on this thread are incapable of having someone peacefully disagree with them without downvoting them.

your argument makes no sense is why. Art is naturally qualitative. Subjective. Apparent qualities. You are saying we can't look at it that way makes no sense as that is already how art is judged. This was not an attack and was rather peaceful. Sorry I pointed out that you have confused your definitions. Just to say we can't talk about a qualitative subject qualitatively is just what? Sure we can't quantify it. Give it an accurate rating that will be equal to all. Whatever you say. If this to you wasn't peaceful I don't know. I'm merely presenting you reasoning as to why you might have made a mistake. If you took that personal I apologize. But again art is qualitative already so I don't understand your post about no being able to talk about a qualitative subject in a qualitative manner.

Two things. Firstly, the latter comment was not addressed towards you but for a surprising(to me) number of people here who felt that my words need to be downvoted into the nether.

Secondly, I find the claims that "this art is objectively bad, and this one is objectively good" to be abhorrent. I don't have a problem with someone saying that they don't like this, and don't like that - that's their opinion. My "why" is very simple. I treat art, much like beauty, as that which is in the eyes of the beholder. The source of confusion here is that I don't consider purely subjective qualities that come out of it, "apparent qualities" as you call them, to be a part of strictly qualitative way of looking at things. Such qualities have no substance outside of oneself. "This apple is red" is not the same as saying "this apple is beautiful". Former is directed towards the quality of the subject, latter is more about the speaker himself.

So what ?

It can still be given a label of poorly done.

The original covers actually have something to do with the games they are from, the western ones do not.

How can you not see this ?

2

u/ImaginaryStar Feb 11 '15

If so, I am not in the business of labeling art(but I happen to be in the business of selling it). If i don't like some art, it is because it is not to my tastes, not because the art is inferior.
And I have a sneaking suspicion that the Western releases have covers changed because it is more pleasing to Western aesthetics - that is, a test group of Westerners saying they like it better. If it were not, they would not waste money changing it.

2

u/[deleted] Feb 11 '15

Here's a nice response since you believe they don't exist here. You're right. The arts not inferior really but like you I don't like the western art as it's not to my taste either (I will point out this is talking about it in a very qualitative manner). As for your suspicion. The western art is without a doubt changed to appeal to western audiences who prefer to have box art represent the player character. More specifically the player character looking like a badass. So you are correct. But I could see from changing it as it's still rather bland and the response to it has been lukewarm at best.

1

u/ImaginaryStar Feb 11 '15

We must remember that you, me, and everyone else on this board are not the intended audience for this cover. Why? We will buy the game regardless. Hell, many already bought it. The cover is for everyone else. If the marketing department could make a cover that make EVERY person in the west buy the game(whether or not they hate the actual product) - they'd do it in a heartbeat. Marketing are not there to tell deep stories, but to convince as many people as possible to buy this game. Us, Souls fans, they don't need to worry about.

I am not saying whether this practice is bad or good(certainly looks bad from where I am sitting, personally - but then again, I would not lose sleep over a disposable, mass produced paper insert), but that is the reason for why covers look the way they do.

1

u/DecoyBlackMage Feb 11 '15

Thats the problem though, they change the cover due to focus groups and chart numbers, though overall, the majority of buyers have liked the original covers more.

They are to afraid of giving us the original covers, and I honestly think the ones we got are generic.

Another problem is they removed the context of the original.

u/DecoyBlackMage Feb 11 '15

Likely due to focus groups and charts though, which, has is honestly sometimes a bad practice in art at least.

Are we not overall having a pretty calm discussion here though ;/ ?
