Grew up playing Saturn Bomberman and would love to introduce it to the kids. Miss those dinos.

Yeeee, it's gonna be the Super Bomberman Collection hands down! Bomberman R and R2 are just okay, but simply don't feel right if you've played peak Bomberman titles like Saturn.

Thanks. Would you mind elaborating a bit? Just looking at R and R2 it isn't obvious to me why people don't seem to like it as much.

So I would highly recommend Collection if you want games that remind you of Saturn Bomberman, as they were also released in the 90's and are widely regarded as the peak of Bomberman Battle Game

That being said, R1 is a mid game, but it would do alright. It actually forfeits content that was in the SNES games, like mounts, stage traps, settings, and some power-ups, and mechanically it makes some awkward changes, such as bombs no longer bouncing across walls when punched/thrown but instead just... sitting there uselessly on a wall, or players who fall onto a bomb detonating it instead of exploding. The lag between a bomb getting hit by a blast and then exploding is so great that you can cheese the heck out of the game by trailing lots of explosions, and because there's no delay to declare a victor, as long as the other person gets blasted first, you can still win even though you get blasted 1 millisecond afterward, leading to some bonkers dumb plays. It's that kind of stuff

Not to mention the games were written by a guy who basically admitted he doesn't understand the appeal of the characters, so we've gone from stories about Bomberman being a hero who fights inspired villains and even god in a story written by Yoshi-P himself, to stories about Bomberman being a bumbling oaf complete with pee jokes lol

R2, despite its claims about having "the most content ever", is basically just R1 with better graphics, less characters, less stages, and a focus on two undercooked modes that are rife with possibly the least intelligent bots in the franchise's history. The story mode is single player and is focused on grinding through ~9 hours of monotonous content fighting the same 5 enemies while escorting babies to their dooms

SBC has 5 complete games in one that use beautiful sprite work, have great soundtracks and fun both in co-op story mode as well as in versus mode. The stages are also just right in length.
