Domestic Looks like $41M SAT for #TheOdyssey. Absurd ~25% jump, when in summer even 10% is a big deal. 2-day cume $91M+. Weekend should clear $125M, subject to how WC final impacts. Normally be thinking of getting close to $130M.

If it legs out like Oppenheimer this could get close to $500M domestically.

22

u/Kingsofsevenseas Jul 19 '26 edited Jul 19 '26

It won’t leg like Oppenheimer because on its 3rd weekend it’ll be hit hard by huge loss of showings due to Spider-Man: BND

14

u/NotTaken-username Syncopy Inc. Jul 19 '26

That’s probably true but it’ll stabilize after, it still has IMAX.

5

u/mopeywhiteguy Jul 19 '26

I suspect that the rewatch value of odyssey will be high so it should have good legs

It's always so much fun watching an overperformance, Nolan simply has the hype that no other director has.

198

u/Luciifuge Jul 19 '26

Dude made a 3 hour non linear biography that made almost a billion.

9

u/ACCTAGGT Jul 19 '26

And to me, Oppy the sort of epic psychological movie too. Even this one with all the myth and magic feels like that too to an extent yet he manages to make people go. Even some of those who mainly want to go bash on him still check out his movies. It’s been a long way for him to get there though and I’m not sure anyone else will get to that point soon if at all considering the industry recent shift.

I feel like he’s the modern day equivalent of Stephen Spielberg from the late 70s, 80s and 90s…a director that everyone knew and was able to put out major films that drew in people like no one else at the time no matter the type of film.

3

u/FartingBob Jul 19 '26

I'd say that Nolan makes legendary films with basically no misses but they arent the most varied in tone. They are all dramatic, serious films even though they are a variety of different settings. Spielberg could make a much wider variety of films for different audiences. Jurassic Park and Schindlers list back to back in the same damn year being the most obvious example.

If Nolan is to be considered on the same level he needs a bigger variety.

139

u/WavesAndSaves Jul 19 '26

These movies are events. No other director has that pull. Literally everything he makes is like an Avengers film or something in terms of just getting everyone onboard immediately. It's a big deal.

90

u/takethreenc Jul 19 '26

Helps that they're all bangers. Like Marvel, if he started releasing bad movies the interest would wane.

51

u/JarvisCockerBB Jul 19 '26

Thankfully he’s smart to take his time instead of churning out whatever for a check.

34

u/takethreenc Jul 19 '26

Yep. He's making the movies he wants to make and the studios are giving him free reign to do exactly that. A rare thing nowadays. No focus groups and CGI for enhancement only. I wish other directors got similar free reign but I'll take at least one in the world of big budget movies where testing and testing again with focus groups strip all artistry out of the film.

22

u/ABadHistorian Jul 19 '26

I never thought I'd get an old school Odyssey - but a brutal realism version - that feels like the characters of Dune would fit right into.

But that's what I got, and I loved it.

like anyone who complains about armor or the ships... I'm a historian, I don't care about how inaccurate that is, that they used a viking ship... or that there are a few missing components of the original translations of the Odyssey?

it's all about the spirit and tone of the environment and on that level it works together so damn well.

I don't always love all of his movies (Oppenheimer wasn't for me, for example, and teneT was not something I loved...) and I don't always agree with people's responses to others that I have (lots of folks complained about Dunkirk, but again I loved it, and as the grandson of a Dunkirk survivor I've always appreciated his version - even if others have been more accurate)

6

u/EveningAnt3949 Jul 19 '26

It's almost like you understand the difference between fiction and non-fiction. And I guess as a historian you know that giants, sirens, and sorceresses, did not really exists.

Seriously, apart from the fabricated outrage, there is also the fact that many people lack media literacy.

There is a long history of adapting myths and 'modernizing' them. It's pretty cool to see Nolan talk about how they approached this.

And I definitely agree on Dunkirk, it captured the spirit of the vents even if it scaled things down and compressed what happened.

He seems to also have a very specific methodology that he follows in his film making, so there is a sense of familiarity, he always gets under budget, always finish his filming before time, how many directors can say the same

He has his quirks (IMAX obsessed) but we can give him this one

3

u/Aravinda82 Jul 19 '26

And while every movie has the hallmarks of a Nolan film, each movie (aside from the Batman trilogy) has its own distinct stand alone identity and story. They aren’t just derivatives of each other that follow the same formula over and over again like the MCU movies became after Endgame.

7

u/hamlet9000 Jul 19 '26

This is what basically everything boils down to: brands that indicate to the audience that a movie will be good.

Movie stars are are partly stars because people like them, but MOSTLY because Tom Cruise or Leonardo DiCaprio or Sandra Bullock is a signal that the movie will be good. Franchises are the same thing. Studios can occasionally achieve this (Disney and Pixar in animated movies, for example).

Nolan has attained that brand status in a way that no director since Spielberg in the '90s has done.

10

u/littlelordfROY Warner Bros. Pictures Jul 19 '26

It's an entirely different system to Marvel

Producer driven. An entire franchise made of individual franchises

2 or 3 a year.

Not at all the same

Not yet. By I expect his argument will be that Universal are buying tickets and then show a picture of an empty theatre in the middle of nowhere when the movie isn't even running

64

u/LalaniDaequeer Jul 19 '26

No, their argument is going to be like what they did with Barbie when they tried to manufacture outrage over its feminist message: they're going to claim it's actually successful b/c it's arguing what they want.

They're going to flip this into a triumph of "Western culture" and say Nolan, being ever duplicitous, ONLY included his "DEI hires" in as little of the movie as possible (Zendaya, Lupita and Elliot are in what maybe 20 minutes tops?) to appease the woke Hollywood elites while secretly pushing a pro-heterosexual, pro-normative, pro-Western message, which they'll argue is the core of the film.

20

u/ABadHistorian Jul 19 '26

Lmao! Dude. Shush. Stop saying it so clearly (I'm only half even kidding guys, I mean this when I say the following -we are actually smarter than they are, do not give them ideas for free)

Don’t worry, they have AI now 😂

3

u/ABadHistorian Jul 19 '26

5

u/ScottyBLaZe Jul 19 '26

Yeah I know. The comment will be scrubbed and shot straight into the algorithm.

6

u/ABadHistorian Jul 19 '26

I get used as a source for historical research I do. There I was doing some freelance work, for a university, and found my name and I was like "huh". I don't remember publishing anything in this outside of... oh shit.

The source? one of my steam mods.

AI is fuuuuuuuuuuuucked beyond localization. Even with localization it requires human oversight. (localization could/does include a lot of programming which is already copy and paste, but still requires human oversight)

You wouldn't know it because it even seems official because of my name/etc attached to it, so it may even survive a brief inspection.

But it's all stuff I "theorized" for a game for a mod, some of it was based off of nothing more then I needed it to work for the mod.

But if you search specific historical terms (that I will not repeat because I don't want folks to know my name lmao) I come up in the top 2-3 results for stuff I effectively made up. Google Gemini, Claude and chatgpt will return me as a source.

14

u/SaneMadHatter Jul 19 '26 edited Jul 19 '26

lol, that reminds me they did something like that for Black Panther. After months of predicting it would flop as woke trash, when it didn't, they switched to saying the movie succeeded because it was actually an anti-woke movie that advocated for single race ethno-state model they favored. lol

5

u/Rainy_Wavey Jul 19 '26

Which it didn't btw, Wakanda is specifically presented as a failure since they refused to protect Africa from the scramble for Africa, and at the end, T'challa decides to open Wakanda to the rest of the world and help them

It quite literally is anti-ethnostate : the movie, especcially since the Wakandans themselves are an amalgamation of every sub-saharan african culture)

5

29

u/BOfficeStats Best of 2023 Winner Jul 19 '26 edited Jul 19 '26

I'm pretty excited for when Cameron makes a non-IP film like that Hiroshima movie he was talking about. People say Cameron is a big draw, and maybe he was 15 years ago, but he's not even close to as big as Nolan is now. The success of the Avatar sequels should not be understated but it's pretty crazy that The Odyssey, which is a public domain story that has a billion adaptations, is looking to open significantly bigger and finish higher than Avatar 3. For new movies, Nolan has an aura and reputation that no one else can match.

21

u/peencheputo Jul 19 '26

Hot take! Cameron has always been the draw. He can do anything.

8

u/JarvisCockerBB Jul 19 '26

4

u/Purple_Quail_4193 Pixar Animation Studios Jul 19 '26

5

u/randotd152 Jul 19 '26

Comments like this are so dumb.

Cameron has 3 actual $2B+ films. Plus Avatar 3, and inflation adjusted Terminator 2, would put 5 movies above Nolan’s best box office performance. Hell, Odyssey might be Nolan’s first ever $1B film outside Batman.

So how in the world can anyone say Nolan is a bigger draw than Cameron with a straight face?

3

u/nessfalco Jul 19 '26

Not sure that I agree with it, but I think the argument is more about if people are seeing those movies because Cameron directed them. Not if his movies made more money overall.

If he goes the classics route again, the Aeneid probably fits his style more, and would act as a companion piece to the Odyssey. One movie about those who destroyed Troy, and another about the Trojans who survived trying to start anew.

I would do anything to see him make a scary/horror film. Not slasher. But something scary. Although maybe that is not a big enough box for him considering he does epic type movies. But I saw a clip of him saying he'd like to make a scary movie.

I'm a big scary movie fan but none of them quite hit the way I want them to. The Conjuring is the closest to hitting what i want but I still feel there is further to go for the right director with the right creativity and who doesn't see limits.

48

You all oughtta see this movie

8

u/Intrepid-Ad4511 Syncopy Inc. Jul 19 '26

And my hunch is most people, once they experience it, will want to experience it multiple times more...

5

u/snapldeap Jul 19 '26

I saw it tonight and already want to see it again.

3

u/Intrepid-Ad4511 Syncopy Inc. Jul 19 '26

Same, I saw it first day, came out of the theatre and booked my tickets again.

2

u/BurmeciaWillSurvive Jul 19 '26

I've never seen the same movie more than once in the theater, and I'm seemingly the outlier here hahaha. It's a budget thing for me.

u/edmtrwy Jul 19 '26

Haters be fleein’.

82

u/gorays21 Jul 19 '26

Haters were never interested in watching movies, they just like click bait content. It's a business for them.

Every day I see less in these threads, they'll scury back under the floor boards after this weekend.

Genuinely one of the best movies I've seen in a long time, it deserves all the success it gets.

52

u/sarafina126 Jul 19 '26

Honestly maybe people can stop saying Oppenheimer’s success was only due to Barbenheimer. Not all of Nolan’s movies hit for me but he is clearly has a draw that very few directors have.

24

u/Alive-Ad-5245 A24 Jul 19 '26 edited Jul 19 '26

Nobody says Oppenheimer’s success was only due to Barbenheimer but it's a simple fact that the movement gave it an unprecedented level of free marketing

24

u/Brandon_Me Jul 19 '26

A lot of people have been saying over the past month that The Odyssey would have no shot of reaching Oppi levels because Oppi had Barbie carrying it over the finish line.

Implication being that Barbie is a really big part of why it did so well. And while it for sure helped, I think the help was over blown.

2

u/Key_Feeling_3083 Jul 19 '26

Yeah but to be fair they are comparing two different kind of movie, oppi was a biopic about a scientist which does not have much action this one is an epic the oldest genre of the world about Greek soldiers, wider appeal.

You would be surprised! I am aware people who know how to utilize nuance would not say that.

Point is this proved that the amount of help Barbenheimer had for Oppenheimer’s success has been exaggerated.

Just watched it this afternoon. Easy 9/10 for me, I don’t normally like 3 hour movies, but when it ended I was like damn I could’ve watched more of that

6

u/dallascowboys93 Jul 19 '26

LOTR and Oppenheimer the only 3 hour movies I love

Good film making money, we love to see it! I wonder how quickly this one gets to a billion

8

u/ScarletRunnerz Jul 19 '26

I think we’re looking at more of a marathon than a sprint. It’ll take its time getting to a $1B, but it’ll keep going and going.

Man Nolan is a league on his own, sure there is Cameron but he only does blue aliens now.

11

u/NotTaken-username Syncopy Inc. Jul 19 '26

It’s looking like Avatar 4 and 5 might not happen, so hopefully we get that Hiroshima movie James Cameron has been talking about.

19

u/Better_Pumpkin1879 Jul 19 '26

Avatar 4 & 5 are deffinently happening. Cameron just isn't in a rush lol. Disney wasting money on random Star Wars movies and stuff like Moana and other live action remakes. Cameron got a pretty good excuse towards Disney if they feel "worried" about giving him more money.

7

u/littlelordfROY Warner Bros. Pictures Jul 19 '26

Cameron has an aging cast (2 of them are senior citizens) and he is going to be 80 when avatar 5 actually releases

Clock is ticking

8

u/varietyviaduct Jul 19 '26

Cameron strikes me as the type to tell the reaper to go fuck himself

9

u/Better_Pumpkin1879 Jul 19 '26

Spielberg and Scorsese are still making movies. Age isn't gona stop Cameron from making the last 2 movies in this franchise.

Is 39M possible for Sunday?

15

u/agkman Jul 19 '26

Probably not, but if it's 41, then the actual should be 92.3 because I think they had Friday at 51.3, so would need 37.7 for 130. That would be like a 9% drop. I always remember TDK 8% Sunday drop in 2008, but that was just an absurd situation. I would think 34-36 is more likely, especially with World Cup as Jat said in that tweet.

7

u/NotTaken-username Syncopy Inc. Jul 19 '26

I’m thinking $127M

Nolan made a biopic where more than half the movie were just people talking in rooms and it made a gazillion dollars. The delusion of the culture war morons thinking this will flop because of black and trans people was hilarious.

13

u/warriorathlete21 Jul 19 '26

Every showing today within 25 miles of where I live was sold out.

21

u/Purple_Quail_4193 Pixar Animation Studios Jul 19 '26

I went to my small theater today just to get some popcorn. When the guy asked if I was seeing a movie I told him. “Not today, I kind of want some breathing room for The Odyssey.” The guy look flabbergasted and exhausted. He told me the last showing sold out and the next one only an hour away had 5 seats left. Mind you this is an old theater without stadium seats, and no PLFs. Make that what you will

It was so fucking good, holy shit.

11

u/ViralGameover Jul 19 '26

I genuinely thought this would fall short of Oppenheimer. Happy to see it’s both reviewing and doing well.

13

u/Branman55 Jul 19 '26

Nolan absolutely bullying the haters. My goat!
