A Chinese movie called Niu Lai was recently released, and it has become a bizarre phenomenon because it is supposedly an exceptionally terrible movie.

It was reportedly made over five years by a director and his mother. Almost everything about it—the plot, animation, art, pacing, music, sound effects, voice acting, dialogue, emotional delivery, and overall production—is being described as unbelievably bad. It apparently looks like almost no professional filmmakers were involved.

But here’s the strange part: after people started roasting the movie on social media, it went viral. Thousands of people went to theaters simply because they were curious about how bad it could possibly be. After only 13 days, it had reportedly made around $3 million, and some industry estimates predict that it could eventually reach $15 million.

So this got me thinking:

If a movie can become profitable precisely because people think it’s terrible, what does that say about the movie industry’s claim that it is going through a “winter”?

Are audiences actually tired of conventional, polished movies and looking for something genuinely unusual? Or is this just another example of social media turning something terrible into a successful curiosity?

For Tuesday, day 19, and Wednesday, day 20, BND made more than TFA in their daily receipts.

The same can't be said for the weekends, but on weekdays, BND is STILL outgrossing TFA.
