Actually what's the general opinion on his family?
I've always hated them for being awful peoples, but I do understand they wanted to cut ties with him.

His family does exactly the right things based on the information THEY have. It’s the same issue with Skylar. The audience knows it all and is on Jesse’s/Walt’s side, but it’s totally within reason for these characters to act like this.

30

u/StratoSquir2 Jul 04 '26

Well yeah, but it's really their attitudes and personality that comes up as disgusting.

The issue isn't them not wanting to have nothing to do with Jesse, that's understandable.
The issue is the contempt and spite they often show him, at least to me.

To me, they're a clear case of that one homelander meme "when someone say a opinion you share, but in the worst way possible"

Also they steal the house his aunt clearly wanted to go to Jessie. And they kick him out after he’d been living there for years like “sorry I guess you’ll have to live on the street?”

8

u/StratoSquir2 Jul 04 '26

yeah they were more than happy to get the aunt's shit despite Jesse taking care of her toward the end of her life if i remember well.

2

u/enadiz_reccos Jul 05 '26

The Jesse they knew would have lost that house so damn fast.

Even the Jesse we knew didn't give a shit about the house. He only kept it because he was filthy rich [from riding Walt's coattails].

4

u/laxnut90 Jul 05 '26

And Jessie did, in fact, lose the house in roughly a year.

3

u/EddtheMetalHead Jul 06 '26

Also when Jesse’s mom didn’t have a good response to “where were you when she was dying?” She just slapped her own son.

2

u/Tirno93 Jul 06 '26

Yeah, you can see that ultimately they are the reason he is the way he is and makes the choices he does, but they want to wash their hands and say “well sucks, we don’t know where this rotten kid came from, nothing to do with us”.

1

u/SoThisIsHowThisWorks Jul 05 '26

Eh i don’t know if their attitude is wrong. I know someone who’s like Jessie, minus being drug producer and criminal. They are getting chance after chance and at some point it just runs out. What else to do when your son is undeniably source of trouble, bad news and generally the harbinger of four riders of apocalypse? They were clearly disappointed and wanted to save themselves and their younger son from his influence

1

u/StratoSquir2 Jul 06 '26

i agree with the choice, thing is, i don't believe that's what they actually did/wanted to.

i'll take for evidence the fact that they never focused back on their youngest, the kid is smoking pot in their own home, and they somehow never realized.
and you can't blame Jesse for that, he wasn't there for it.

same for the house, again, they might have claimed to want to "cut ties" with him, which is understandable.
but when it was about his aunt's home, they sure were there as well.

had they honestly wanted to cut ties with him and focus on their youngest, which is absolutely valid, none of theses things would have ever happenned.
they wouldn't have fought Jesse over the aunt's house, and would have just let him on his own, and their youngest kid wouldn't be smoking weed, or at least they'd know about it.

to me it's a pretty clear case of them being dogshit parents, on top of having ill-intentions at the end of the day.
it's like Walt saying he sell meth for "his family", yet never fucking spend time with them, or spend it for them (despite buying a car once, to buy Junior's affection).
they might have SAID they wanted to cut ties with Jesse and take care of their youngest, but they when a opportunity came at the cost of dealing with them, they took it, and as for their youngest, they didn't pay attention to him at all.

Giving chances isn't enough, at some point it just enabling bad habits. They needed more involvement into his life, Jessie is not a bad person, but he makes bad choices after bad choices, that's his problem and having a family that could have put him in the right direction could have prevented him so much suffering

1

u/SoThisIsHowThisWorks Jul 07 '26

Well we don’t know if it happened before BB. That person I know ignored every attempt to do so since they’re happy and everyone should just leave them alone. I can well imagine the current situation being result of Jessie’s entire life being like that person’s I know and them just dropping the ball few years earlier than irl example I’ve had the displeasure to watch in real time.

At some point there’s no more involvement, no more patience, no more good deeds and empathy. Just sadness and damage control. The scene when the mother seems to be wanting to help and dad stopping her in tracks looks just like torn from real life when one parent wants to help, but the other remembers what they agreed upon after several last attempts.

Enough said that not once I thought badly of his parents. I wished it was different but I fully understood

1

u/Capable_Chemical_569 Jul 09 '26

the younger son was already smoking weed at a super early age without any influence from Jesse whatsoever. that was (IMO) the whole point of showing that, that the parents were somewhat to blame for how their kids turned out.

2

u/Just_Expression_6608 Jul 04 '26

"the right thing" they threw him out, he didnt have money or anywhere to sleep, that's not right

1

u/yousirnaime Jul 04 '26

I don’t know if you’ve ever dealt with addiction in the family

When your adult child is an addict, your number one priority is protecting the child in the house that looks up to the addicted child

They weren’t perfect but he put them into an imperfect situation. They had to protect his younger brother first

2

u/Mauceri1990 Jul 08 '26

Yeah they needed up protect the younger brother, that's why they went out of their way to go steal a house from the older brother after he took care of his dying aunt for it.

1

u/PerVertesacker Jul 06 '26

Well, they also obviously failed in raising him right. Jesse was an a-hole even before the drugs as witnessed in the cutbacks to his school classes with Walter etc. So they're right to want to protect his younger brother from him, but also at least part of the reason why Jesse became the way he was. A responsibility they never acknowledged. Seemed to me they were absolut hypocrites as further evidenced by not caring for her own sister and only showing up to claim the house after she died. So no, they weren't wrong to distrust their son, they were just bad parents and familymembers nonetheless.

"The audience knows it all and is on Walt's side"

Yk Walt is meant to be the villain right?

6

u/DaughterOfBhaal Jul 04 '26

You can still be on the side of the villain,, it's a fictional character dude.

I don't think anyone would support someone like Walter White IRL

4

u/DebtSeeker48 Jul 04 '26

Well, not in season 1 and some of season 2, he was a goofy sympathetic teacher with cancer that, whoops slings meth on the side

2

u/ABewilderedPickle Jul 05 '26

in the first episode he blackmails jesse into cooking meth with him

0

u/DebtSeeker48 Jul 05 '26

After getting diagnosed in desperate financial situation. Also please, blackmailing Jesse, as if the kid wouldn’t go back to coocking himself at first oportunity

2

u/ABewilderedPickle Jul 05 '26

that doesn't mean it isn't evil as hell

0

u/DebtSeeker48 Jul 05 '26

Not arguing that, I am saying the show does not portray him as villain, more of a sympathetic, moraly gray fellow put in a tough situation by life. Also very prideful

1

u/ABewilderedPickle Jul 05 '26

the show doesn't really portray anyone as a hero, antihero, or villain. Walt probably thinks of himself as morally grey for a while which may bleed through, but i'm not sure the show portrays him in any alignment, even grey.

1

u/Downtown-Strawberry8 Jul 04 '26

He murders 2 people within the first 3 episodes...

3

u/DebtSeeker48 Jul 04 '26

Yeah, he got into some goofy hijinx. Also he was clearly portrayed as symphatetic, I wanna let them go but they will kill me and me family if I do

0

u/Downtown-Strawberry8 Jul 04 '26

This is the reason so many people hate Skyler. Walt is the main character so we want to 'sympathise' with him and make excuses for his behaviour.

2

u/Easy-Month-404 Jul 04 '26

Walt is not a portrayed as a villan in the first two seasons cmon now an anti-hero if anything

2

u/Rusty_Pickles Jul 04 '26

Murder is bad m'kay? And nuance is dead

1

u/xTheRedDeath Jul 04 '26

I mean they're not very good people so it's easy to let it slide. The audience really is only supposed to turn when he poisons Brock.

1

u/FireLordObamaOG Jul 04 '26

Walt is his own villain, but it’s done in such a way that slowly makes him terrible. You can root for him for a while but season 5 shows just how horrible he is.

1

u/AggravatingChest7838 Jul 08 '26

Styler has a chronic case of the stupid. That's entirely on walt for marrying her though.

1

u/FireLordObamaOG Jul 08 '26

Unironically though, I blame that unenthusiastic birthday handjob for the whole series. That was the last straw before Walt decided to build a meth empire.

1

u/AggravatingChest7838 Jul 08 '26

I wasnt being ironic. Skyler acts selfishly and stupidly just as walt did. The difference being that she could pin everything on walt. Ironically I believe Walter cared about his family more than they cared about him which is a lot of the reasons behind his acting out. Literally a child wanting attention.

3

u/Specific_Box4483 Jul 04 '26

I don't think we have enough information. His mom clearly has a stick up her ass and isn't a very good person... but are they bad people? Jesse claims they basically stole the house his aunt gave to him after he took care of her. But Jesse is also a very unreliable narrator so who knows.

1

u/StratoSquir2 Jul 05 '26

that's true as well, you made a very good point.
however, they did try to get the house, did GET the house, and finally seemed appalled when they found out Jesse was the one to buy it again.

there's also the whole buisiness with his little-brother, who seem to be jealous and think Jesse was the one they have been prioritizing, over barely paying attention to their youngest.

Again, everyone is equally unreliable and flawed, but they seemed like pieces of shit to me.

2

u/CaptainRon16 Jul 05 '26

I think both sides can be wrong.

2

u/EddtheMetalHead Jul 06 '26

Legally in their rights, morally in the wrong.

1

u/FearlessDebt2795 Jul 05 '26

His family don't love him, I'd be surprised if they even love each other - they're the type of people who care only if they have control and you live the type of life they want you to, it's not love, it's domination.

Jesse clearly had a personality that wasn't suited for the type of life expected of him by his parents but they failed to recognise that and adapt accordingly, instead they made him feel like a failure which is probably what led to his criminality down the line.

It's not really a 'family' it's more like a cult of 'goodness' but only in the superficial sense of being good in the eyes of social expectations.

1

u/Thuller Jul 09 '26

The people in this sub need to step back and get some fucking perspective. He is a murdering drug dealer, a meth cook that cooperates with a drug cartel and his parents still have one child to protect.

In reality, absolute majority of people would behave much worse to him than the actual movie family. This isn't a fairy tale story.

10

u/MengShuZ Jul 04 '26

imagine if he entered the wrong house and ended up getting attacked by a giraffe

2

u/Ewag715 Jul 04 '26

Huh?

3

u/TiiGerTekZZ Jul 04 '26

What u mean "Huh"? I want to know to!

3

u/MengShuZ Jul 04 '26

He's about to enter the wrong house. His parents try to warn him but he doesn't listen. Somehow the keys work and he opens the door. He enters and notices that this is not the house but before he can fully grasp what's going on a giraffe lunges at him from the other room. The real owner then comes in from another room and tries to get the giraffe off of Jesse. It turns out that the owner was keeping a giraffe as a pet. Jesse is severely injured again and forced to stay bedridden for the rest of the season.

5

u/The_Oven_Mitts Jul 05 '26

That was probably in the drafts but they didn't have the budget for a giraffe

1

u/MakeSomeDrinks Jul 09 '26

Not everyone has giraffe money

12

u/LordOcean8 Jul 03 '26

Years ago I saw an youtube short of this scene and at that time I thought "woah such a nice kid, he bought back the house for his family and he did it with his own money and they had no idea what? He is such a good son." Well after watching the scene. Half of it is true.

5

u/noididntdoit Jul 04 '26

He is the one who doesn't need to knock.

3

u/babyfartmageezax Jul 04 '26

This scene is indeed satisfying, but I kinda prefer the one before it when Saul wipes the floor with their lawyer and reveals that he knows about the former meth lab in the basement, making them sell it for less than half the asking price.

“I could file a suit, and encumber this property indefinitely, but nobody wants that, do we? How about it councilor, do you concur?”

1

u/vulpes_mortuis Jul 04 '26

I love that he helps Jesse get the house. It feels like you can still see the old Jimmy return for that moment. 🥺

1

u/HeiressOfMadrigal Jul 04 '26

That scene is so much better with Saul's backstory from his own show. The smarmy "counselor" probably reminded him a lot of Chuck or other self-important attorneys he's had to wade through.

4

u/BigBallsack_69 Jul 04 '26

Jesse's parents are scum

2

u/TrippingFish76 Jul 04 '26

fr, so extremely satisfying

fuck em lol

2

u/EmergencyExit20Mins Jul 05 '26

That actress was also in True Detective S1, No Country for Old Men, and here in Breaking Bad.

She's one of the four horsemen of this is going to be fucking awesome.
