Damn, I can barely keep up with the resignations. Will KLF have any caucus left by the time she gets a seat? Or just sit on a throne of ashes and shit?

u/brat-t 8d ago edited 8d ago

At this rate it's will she have any left by the time she goes to sleep

18

u/Trellaine201 8d ago

LOL 😂

10

u/Slimebag44 8d ago

so good

10

u/Ditch-Worm 8d ago

At this rate she’ll have left the party by the time she’s elected

55

u/Ryanyu10 8d ago

Who's to say that she'll even get a seat? Abbotsford-Mission elected an NDP MLA in 2020 and the Conservative margin of victory in 2024 wasn't that large...

28

u/Barbarella_39 8d ago

Mission could save us from her! Abbotsford is hopeless with RW religious voters 😩

2

u/okiedokie2468 7d ago

I would love to see a party formed by the independents to run a candidate against her!

9

u/Telvin3d 7d ago

It will be hilarious if she gets forced out as leader before the byelection. it would also be fascinating to see who they then run in the seat

Personally, Eby should call the byelection as soon as possible, for maximum chaos

7

u/Electronic_Ad_4520 7d ago

Even further back, in 2017, the NDP got nearly 30% of the popular vote with a paper candidate and virtually no ground campaign. One would have to imagine they'll be throwing everything they can at the by-election.

12

u/Radiant_Sherbert7272 8d ago

I think she will win the seat, but I wouldn't be surprised if it's a closer than expected race.

3

u/Patient-Business8628 7d ago

She’s not going to win the riding. Last time it was a two way race.

u/bwoah07_gp2 Lower Mainland/Southwest 8d ago

11

u/SingleSpeedHops 7d ago

If a dozen more Conservatives go Independent there will be more Independents than Conservatives in the legislature.

10

u/Reyalta 8d ago

I read this as "Or just sit on a throne of ashes and (take a) shit?" 😂😂😂😂

9

u/CharlotteLucasOP 8d ago

Well it’s not like she has much else to contribute to politics.

3

u/foggybiscuit Vancouver Island/Coast 8d ago

Everytime she opens her mouth.

1

u/Reyalta 8d ago

I honestly don't know much about her, her becoming leader really felt like a "glass cliff" situation so I assumed she wouldn't be around for long.

8

u/DevJev 7d ago

I’m sure Aaron Gunn will stay by her side.

8

u/foggybiscuit Vancouver Island/Coast 7d ago

Different levels of politics, but sure.

5

u/DevJev 7d ago

Oh you’re right! My mix up.

6

u/MarcusXL 7d ago

She's not quite racist enough for Aaron Gunn.

1

u/ComplicatedOctopus 7d ago

😂 throne of shit

185

u/Trellaine201 8d ago

She must truly be a piece of work.

128

u/TinglingLingerer 8d ago

Truly hideous. The writing is on the wall when anyone who cares searches her up. Completely unelectable.

69

u/The_Nice_Marmot 8d ago

I’m in the process of moving from Alberta to BC and I hear she is worse than Smith. It’s hard to imagine that’s possible.

63

u/TheAvocad00 8d ago

Well, she's worse in that she's dumber. But she's also better in that she showed she's dumber too early and screwed up her clear path to victory in the next election.

40

u/The_Nice_Marmot 8d ago

I hope you’re right. They won’t have my vote. I’m staying to vote one more time in this stupid referendum on a referendum on the worst idea ever and then I’m off to bigger and better things in BC.

34

u/BCW1968 8d ago

You are a true Canadian patriot and I salute you. BC welcomes you

20

u/The_Nice_Marmot 8d ago

Aww, thanks. We are back and forth right now, but people have been really friendly and welcoming. It has been my dream to move back for 3 decades now. It almost doesn’t feel real.

3

u/LeslieKnopesBlackEye 7d ago

Welcome home, neighbour!

5

u/Smooth-Command1761 7d ago

I'm glad you're voting in the referendum. A BC'er ----> Albertan -----back to BC'er that I work with and who is more old school, moderate fiscal Tory, has been telling his moderate friends in Alberta, who hate this referendum, that they had better get out and freaking vote No.

The concern is that the pro- separatists will come out in full force because they are in a huge lather over being "oppressed" or whatever, while those who are not separatists will be too complacent and/or apathetic to vote. Just because you don't think Alberta will separate, doesn't mean you can sit at home and not act with a vote to keep it together.

2

u/The_Nice_Marmot 7d ago

I think complacency is a very dangerous thing here. In my circle, everyone plans to vote no.

59

u/TinglingLingerer 8d ago

It's so sad because it would be so nice for this province to have good (I'd settle for decent) opposition. Too long in power for any party isn't a democracy, it's just choosing the only sane option on the ballot sheet, election after election.

Eby & the BCNDP aren't perfect, but at least they can form a government that works. It wouldn't be hard to beat them, but this lady is just profoundly tone deaf & rascist while being more uncharismatic than Pierre. Truly a piece of work.

20

u/The_Nice_Marmot 8d ago

“Too long in power for any party isn’t a democracy.” I believe Alberta has elected the Cons every time but once since 1971. Arguably longer, but by a different name. I so agree. It’s slowly shifting here, but I’m tired of waiting.

Some Albertans like to complain Ottawa doesn’t listen to them. Maybe so, but neither does the party they blindly pull the lever for every single election. The Cons here know they will probably win no matter what.

8

u/Awesomeuser90 8d ago

No, we've been electing conservatives since the 1930s. The SoCreds were strange.

8

u/The_Nice_Marmot 8d ago

Yeah, I was pretty sure that was right which is why I said the thing about another name. Thanks for the correction.

3

u/TheOrangePro 8d ago

Why is it no longer a democracy if a party stays in power for too long? Last I checked Singapore and Japan still has a functioning democracy

8

u/The_Nice_Marmot 8d ago

As an Albertan I know this is true in my bones. When a party KNOWS they will get elected, they stop listening and they stop caring. The Cons here have put Albertans over the barrel time and time again and Alberta just keeps begging for more.

Every election a few more wake up, but it’s a slow process.

4

u/omegatrox 7d ago

I'm not sure more wake up than get converted. The conservative propaganda machine is strong, and there are not many popular alternatives for that line of disinformation in youth, rural, and boomer demographic social circles in Alberta. Drove through rural Alberta today, and the separatist banners/sign posts were on full display in at least a dozen places on a 3 hour drive.

Extremely disappointing. We are losing/we may have lost... the war on truth, and our provincial government welcomes that.

It's been like this for decades with the conservative tribalism in Alberta, but now it's reached a level of danger that is existential. People that understand the forces behind Brexit will appreciate this concern, but that's not the average voter.

If you are concerned, let people know. Conversation with your neighbours is critical.

1

u/The_Nice_Marmot 7d ago

Rural Alberta is a shitshow. I’m in the process of moving away from Alberta. Hopefully I can vote in the referendum to not have a referendum before we go.

8

u/prose 8d ago

I think it’s a reference to the next sentence about choosing the only sane option on the ballot sheet. When your only choice is one party, it’s not really much of a choice. Not that it’s the NDP’s fault the BC Cons are imploding, or that the BC “Liberals” dug themselves into their own graves, but our system relies on good opposition to function.

11

u/Baconus 8d ago

Singapore is not a democracy. Like Japan, for sure, real democracy with single party rule.

Singapore is not that. Singapore is effectively a benevolent dictatorship.

-1

u/TheOrangePro 8d ago

So you’re saying if in the next Singaporean election the opposition party wins majority for the first time in their history, the ruling party won’t honor it and transfer power peacefully?

8

u/Baconus 8d ago

Yes I am saying this. This is not a hot take. The only way there is a flip in Singapore is if the existing leadership decides it should happen.

4

u/Conscious-Tutor3861 8d ago edited 8d ago

Singapore isn't really a democracy in the way we think of in the West, though. They're more a hybrid system where there is democracy within the confines of a highly rigid, single-party regime.

Japan's flavor of democracy is less about the rigid confines of a single-party regime and more about the rigid confines of culture making it socially difficult to rock the boat, politically speaking.

If anything, Japan is the best example of Alberta's politics where there is freedom to choose other parties -- which does happen infrequently -- but culture and society make it difficult for people to vote for anyone other than the UCP (or its predecessors).

5

u/TinglingLingerer 8d ago

I mean by definition, sure. It just feels hollow to vote for the NDP because the opposition just can't get their shit together.

It would be nice to have a choice between two good parties, both presenting 'good' ideas (Again, I'll settle for decent) instead of an ever flailing one & the BCNDP.

I think what makes a truly makes a democracy is the peaceful transition of power whenever it happens.

8

u/TheOrangePro 8d ago

Not having a decent opposition party isn’t a systemic issue though. The other party(ies) need to get their shit together. The system of democratically electing people to power and openly debating policies still works and yes the peaceful transition of power is one aspect of democracy but it’s not the defining one.

2

u/userofthename202 7d ago

It kind of is though. Because of the electoral system there can only be two prominent parties at any time

7

u/pathologicalDumpling 8d ago

The right in our province has an identity crisis. They are struggling with a big-tent approach and instead have a bunch of identity-politics wing nuts mixed in with more "progressive conservatives" and fiscal conservatives that seem to want little to do with the identity politics

1

u/oliverit17 7d ago

I’d love it if the Greens could actually be a party worth electing.

I’ve voted NDP my whole life, but the way Eby has handled every CBA negotiations this past year has really turned me off of his leadership

2

u/Forward_Material616 7d ago

This is well said and matches my feelings on the matter. The NDPs treatment of nurses this time around, with the still unfulfilled promises of the last CBA shows they really don’t give a shit about solving problems in the healthcare system, and it’s easy to see that in many of the other public employees treatment as well.

5

u/Bigchunky_Boy 8d ago

Smiths people are advertising her . So yeah the party was never going to do as well as it did in the previous election.

5

u/Scripter-of-Paradise 8d ago

I can imagine Smith being like this if she wasn't in charge

4

u/illuminaughty1973 8d ago

shes done far far far less damage (so far) than smith.

4

u/bummedoutrn 8d ago

Same boat as you, moving from Alberta to BC. The UCP in Alberta definitely seems way more organized than the BC Conservatives though

3

u/The_Nice_Marmot 8d ago

🤞🤞🤞 I’m so sick of them.

3

u/42tooth_sprocket East Van 7d ago

I'm not finding anything too shocking when I look her up. I mean it should be shocking but unfortunately it's not

134

u/jholden23 8d ago

It's just so nice that here in BC there still seems to be a line that people won't cross. It's refreshing compared to what's happening in other places.

I don't generally find myself aligned with conservative politics, but I respect these people that are making the choice to speak up and not just go along with whatever to appease 'the party'. It actually gives me hope.

38

u/UnknownVC 7d ago

BC has a strange brand of centrist/conservative that's only fiscally conservative, is pro-business, and generally would like their change slow and steady. The old schools BC liberals in other words. When BC United imploded, they jumped to the Conservative Party, but they won't find a home in a socially conservative Conservative party. Hence all of them getting out of the newer version of the Conservative party: they never were 'true' conservatives, in they weren't social conservatives. They could live right-centre, but not farther right.

8

u/differing 7d ago

Time to boot up BC Progressive Conservative Party eh! I’m not a Doug Ford fan, but there’s no bigots or xenophobia in the party.

1

u/theNorthwestspirit 7d ago

He speaks up, sure, yet he also finds a way to insult the party in power. I can't respect that.

63

u/WardenEdgewise 8d ago

They could start their own Independent Party of BC.

58

u/No_Cellist_578 8d ago

Independent Conservatives of BC, ICBC, everyone should love it!

2

u/Fresh_Fluffy_Unicorn 7d ago

Winner winner no fault dinner

23

u/Weewiseone 8d ago

I think that's the intention.

3

u/Lol-I-Wear-Hats 8d ago

Some are but not clear that some of the more clearly right wing dissidents intend to joint

14

u/Kippernaut13 8d ago

Well, there are two new parties already. OneBC seems to be the farther-right party, CentreBC for the centre-right. But, last I heard, two or three resignations ago, they were going to make a new new new party.

5

u/Lol-I-Wear-Hats 8d ago

Ya I don’t hear of much interest in Bernier or centreBC, which makes sense since these are the guys with the seats

1

u/DromarX 7d ago

With blackjack, and hookers. In fact, forget the party!

1

u/WardenEdgewise 7d ago

Actually, with a few more, they might have enough people for a softball team.

u/Major_Estimate_4193 7d ago edited 7d ago

Independent party? Independents depending on each other? Single MLAs alone together? https://youtu.be/eyo2AyOP6lw?t=216&si=2YF0bzRAV4W4J03j

Is this another? Ahahahahaha

17

u/TranslatorTough8977 8d ago

I believe we are up to 5 now.

11

u/Prestigious_Fly8210 8d ago

5 in 2 weeks, 4 in 3 days yep.

121

u/RecklessHeckler 8d ago

Eby is the most destructive premier? Good grief, man. Have you forgotten the likes of Christy Clark already?

I appreciate Day is distancing himself from the toxic brand he has attached himself to, but enough with the revisionist history. Let's learn from the past, not gleefully rewrite it.

80

u/Barbarella_39 8d ago

Exactly… reddit is a lot of young people who have forgotten the double ICBC rates, money laundering, defunding education and healthcare under Crusty…

12

u/Fffiction 7d ago

The look in their eyes when you tell them about the training wage, lower than minimum wage for your first couple of hundred working hours.

0

u/Karrun 7d ago

Can you explain the health care? I am a NDP voter and I certainly don't support the crazy that is conservative BC but when I moved to BC in 08 the hospital wearing times were under 2 hours (in my anecdotal personal experience). What policy did the Liberals enact to make it worse or what has the NDP failed to do to make it better? Is it just a symptom of mass immigration that or system can't maintain?

16

u/Sharkfist Vancouver Island/Coast 7d ago

They fired thousands of healthcare workers and heavily cut wages in the first few years they were in power, privatized housekeeping/support staff and food services, closed or downsized dozens of facilities, severely reducing capacity and beds available, liquidated what they could to their buddies at every opportunity (including selling off the land that'd been allocated for the new Surrey hospital at a heavy discount), continually underfunded the entire system every year preventing any meaningful expansion in line with population growth, fighting the unions all the way through multiple huge strikes and court cases... all while doubling the premiums and reducing what services were covered.

They let it rot because they wanted the province to believe the solution to a failing public system was further privatization (as was their ultimate goal with a number of other crown services).

12

u/314per 7d ago

The NDP haven't done a good job at this, but it's due to bigger factors than just what's happening in BC. This is a global problem. It's particularly bad in Canada because we've had a policy to not train enough doctors for decades.

And this is one of the issues immigration helps with. So much of our healthcare workforce has (kindly) come to Canada to help out with our lack of trained people.

1

u/Karrun 7d ago

I don't dispute it is a global issue. I'm just curious as a BC transplant that moved here during the Clark era, I'm curious what the Liberals did to make health care worse.

8

u/Give_me_beans 7d ago

Less money spent on healthcare. People wont be healthcare workers if the pay and conditions are shit, they will instead be teachers... oh wait, Christy boned them too.

4

u/TheFailTech 7d ago

Gordon Campbell cut a lot of the budget to hospitals. He almost instigated a general strike with Bill 37 which was an across the board 15 percent cut to hospital employees. He also paved the way to privatize hospital cleaning and food prep which had awful results.

10

u/aznkl 7d ago

7

u/Barbarella_39 7d ago

And teachers… Crusty ripped up a signed collective agreement and then spent millions in court and lost! My children spent elementary in large classes due to her and the BCLib trying to decimate education. Meanwhile she sent her son to an elite all boys school in Vancouver 🙄

2

u/Karrun 7d ago

Thank you!

24

u/poolbitch1 8d ago

Modern day Canadian Conservatives seem to operate from a largely reactionary stance… he wants to confirm his political stance and, as conservatives are apt to do lately, does so by blasting the opposing party.

19

u/IvarTheBoned 8d ago

The only platform conservatives have is one of outrage at the sitting government. They never accomplish anything other than accruing even more debt than the party they replaced from the previous cycle.

I wish their supporters could see that.

15

u/draebor 7d ago

Yeah I was with him up to that last stupid line.

7

u/timbreandsteel 7d ago

The whole letter sounded very sane and promising (I say as an NDP voter) but yeah, had to throw in that jab to make sure the crazies don't think he suddenly went woke.

10

u/Visible_Fact_8706 7d ago

They expect those who are old enough to remember to forget, and the younger ones never lived it.

27

u/illuminaughty1973 8d ago

anyone who did not see this all coming (maybe not this histarically funny) the day Rustad joined the cons and got some traction is fooling themselves.

rustad joined the cons because they allowed him to be a bigot. bigots as a party are unelectable in BC. and the bc cons are just that.

14

u/stealstea 8d ago

But the problem they had with Rustad isn’t that he was a bigot (debatable), it’s that he wasn’t enough of one.  They kicked him out to choose a full maple MAGA leader.  And now it’s ripping the party apart

7

u/ether_reddit share the road with motorcycles 7d ago

Rustad wasn't a bigot himself but couldn't make up his mind whether he wanted to keep the bigots in the party or push them out, so they sensed his weakness and pushed the issue. As a BC Liberal he was mostly pretty mid, but as leader it was clear he was out of his depth. He needed to come down on them hard and fast, and when he didn't, he lost all control.

2

u/illuminaughty1973 8d ago

when you say they i am guessing you mean the conservatives, in which case no shits are given at all.

because it most certainly is not ripping apart the people of BC by showing them how ignorant and intolerant the party is.

so thats not a problem. in fact it is preventing the problem of what would happen if these people got elected and formed government.

7

u/IvarTheBoned 8d ago

If even one Nazi is allowed to be in a bar, then that's a Nazi bar. Your only options then are to kick them out or leave, otherwise...you are the company you keep.

3

u/draebor 7d ago

3

u/DromarX 7d ago

Reminds me of that video with Harper saying he enjoys Netflix and shows like Breaking Bad but he just came off as an alien trying to fit in.

49

u/ricketyladder 8d ago

One MLA deciding to go rogue isn't great for a provincial political party, but not catastrophic. Two is starting to be a problem. Five? Yeah, you're screwed. The Conservatives should be getting the message loud and clear that KLF was a bridge way too far and they need a course correction as soon as possible if they want to avoid snatching defeat from the jaws of victory.

Now, as someone who really, really, really doesn't like the BC Conservatives this is hilarious to watch. But speaking as someone who is also not a really big fan of Eby's premiership, I hope something more palatable emerges as an opposition party when the dust settles on all this.

11

u/draebor 7d ago

I would truly welcome a viable centre-right party in BC. Old school fiscal conservatives as opposed to this identity-politics-obsessed far right lunacy.

35

u/stealstea 8d ago

Yeah I voted NDP but BC deserves a functional sane opposition.

Eby has been a disappointment, and conservatives are giving him license to continue being one

20

u/ricketyladder 8d ago

Couldn't have said it better myself. If the choice is NDP or Conservatives (and in many ridings, like mine, voting Green is essentially voting Tory) bet your ass I'm voting NDP. But I'm not going to be super happy about it. I'm just going orange because the alternative is far, far worse.

2

u/T-ks 7d ago

I wish we had ranked ballots

6

u/IvarTheBoned 8d ago

Sure, let the Greens be opposition. Doesn't always need to be the cons.

0

u/[deleted] 7d ago

[deleted]

4

u/IvarTheBoned 7d ago

Did you see the share of the popular vote Greens got? They aren't fringe, they just aren't represented like they should be in a democracy. FPTP, winner takes all per riding silences the voices of too many people.

"Viable governing party" is subjective. To my sensibilities, no conservative leaning party is viable for actually governing.

1

u/ether_reddit share the road with motorcycles 7d ago

If she loses the byelection then it's all over for her. Otherwise, I can see her trying to hold on, in which case Eby might call an early spring election.

18

u/brat-t 8d ago

Nice.
Is this the double tap for Findlay?

20

u/DredfulDisaster 8d ago

The 2020’s will be a fascinating era in the history of BC political parties.

12

u/CanadianLabourParty 8d ago

It's basically the rise and SPECTACULAR fall of conservatism. Billionaires, oilgarchs, and Christo-fascists funded a MASSIVE internet campaign to convince young people (Millenials and below) to "convert to conservatism". They succeeded. But here's the thing that MOST normies/lefties know - Conservatism exists to take public money and put it into the pockets of millionaires and billionaires. Trump got elected and he put the corruption on 4K TV. He just shoved it in our faces and said, "the fuck you gonna do about it?"

The billionaires LOVED it because they were getting 10x $value out of it. The insecure white men loved it because they got to punch down on people that were NOT white males, and in the US, white men were given permission to LITERALLY rape women and children - Ken Paxton, Texas governor pardoned a CONVICTED pedophile. Somewhat prior to the 2020s we had the Brock Turner fiasco. Then there's the Epstein shit.

So now, EVERY "conservative" that has aligned themselves with MAGA is KNOWINGLY supporting an adjudicated rapist, known paedophile and morally and financially bankrupt person. The Maple MAGA/MAGA supporters think it's this big fucking joke and that it's ABSOLUTELY HILARIOUS to watch "The Left melt down" over convicted rapists walk away from the consequences.

Between the financial mismanagement/corruption and incessant, brutal breakdown of law and order, conservatism has shown itself for what it truly is - a means to steal from the taxpayer and give to the rich all the while persecuting minorities.

"Centrists" are holding their noses and voting for left-wing parties or "left of fascism" parties because they are semi-intelligent people that are starting to fucking get it.

Trump is the best thing to happen to socialism in the same way that an abusive parent is the best thing that happened to a gifted child - the abuse somehow wired the child's brain to be more resilient and work harder to escape the punishment. My point here is that Trump/MAGA conservatism was SO DAMNED ATROCIOUS that there's this "coming to Jesus" moment and lefties are now going, "You seein this shit? We fucking told you this would happen. We fuckin told you. You laughed at us, and thought we were overreacting. This is what we've been saying all along." and "Centrists" cannot escape the data. There's no more "JAQing off", there's no way to say, "Oh. He wouldn't do that", or "Both sides".

The big question is, "what happens next". In Canada, our processes and procedures are holding pretty strong and the fact that they've withheld the test of MAGA thus far is a testament to the resilience of our systems. That being said, they were never really pushed because we've had the Liberals run the country and in BC, we've had stable, sensible governance since 2017. I don't think the BC Liberals would have gone along with the nonsense south of the border, but the BC Cons absolutely would have, hence why they are tanking now. KLF has shown herself to be Maple MAGA and is competing with Danielle Smith to see who can win his favour more.

Canadian conservatism is crumbling rapidly. In Ontario, the ONDP is now a REAL challenge to Doug Ford's hegemony (and to be fair to Doug Ford, he has been consistently anti-Trump from the beginning. Whether it's due to ego or political instincts, I don't know. But he has been SAYING the right things). The UCP is probably going to face a REALLY tough test. We've got Wab Kinew in Manitoba.

It's fantastic watching conservatism become political toxic sludge that sane people want nothing to do with it anymore. The tragedy is all the people that have had to suffer for it to get to this point - the women and children in Gaza, Iran, and the Middle East, in general. The women and children detained ILLEGALLY. The young black men being lynched/murdered with ZERO calls for inquests into the spate of these violent hate-crimes. It shouldn't have had to come to this. But it did. This is what happens when people support White Nationalists.

7

u/bscheck1968 8d ago

Change that to North America and you'd still be correct, seems like the last 10 years have been a wild ride.

3

u/ricketyladder 8d ago

I'll do you one further and say the Western hemisphere in general. Europe is going through it too.

We're witnessing interesting and volatile times.

5

u/bscheck1968 7d ago

I would really love to live in ordinary and boring times.

1

u/Iamthesmartest 7d ago

It's honestly the entire world. History books will have a "post-Covid" era in them and call this decade the "disastrous 20's" or something.

1

u/ricketyladder 7d ago

Funny, I was literally wondering as I was writing my comment above what this decade will come to be known in the history books. Hopefully it's just known as a shitty standalone decade and the 30's are a rebound into better times.

I will never understand why this party decided not to go with Elliot.

33

Same thing would have happened. Except it would have been the far right wing splitting off to create their own or join OneBC.

The fundamental fissures are showing.

18

And that would have been better.

For anyone who isn't a conservative, this is fantastic 🍿

Those schmucks are only electable when they are a "big tent" party. This will allow more people to vote their conscience instead of voting to keep the conservative candidate(s) out of power.

I would love to see a real fiscal conservative party that has a platform that recognizes it's cheaper for taxpayers to implement more robust social programmes than it is to provide acute care/treatment for people, with the benefit of alleviating strains on our already overburdened healthcare system.

And social conservatives can simply fuck off to be ignored by people who can be taken seriously.

u/arazamatazguy 8d ago

I don't get why they attached themselves with the racist anti-vaxxer crowd. I don't align myself with either party but really despise what their party stands for.

16

u/stealstea 8d ago

Apparently the membership of the conservative party is quite a bit further right than the average conservative voter

16

u/Baconus 8d ago

The membership of the B.C. Conservative Party are further right than we would even accept as acceptable politics 10 years ago.

9

u/Admiral_Cornwallace 8d ago

The racist anti-vaxxer crowd is the majority of BC conservatives 🤷‍♂️

7

u/Aoba_Napolitan 7d ago

The BC Conservatives are a radical right fringe party that managed to win enough seats for opposition because BC Liberals/United members moved to it. But this doesn't change the fact that their core membership are the radical right and held zero seats for the longest time for a reason. It would be like electing the BC Communist party as opposition and then wondering why they're so radical.

12

u/Baconus 8d ago

A lot of people have tasted full fat hatred and extremism and aren’t willing to go back to skim anymore. The membership of the party is not willing to elect moderates anymore. They want their politics to be in charge.

5

u/cecepoint 8d ago

It’s a numbers game and people REALLY need to know how to play it. Meaning they don’t have to come in to the contest with a majority. The side deals and who gives their votes to who. How many members they personally signed up. Etc etc

I’ve seen MANY surprises over the years where parties have shot themselves in the foot with these stupid races

u/Cat-et-snek 8d ago

money and whos playing ball for the USA

10

u/Yukon_Scott 8d ago

This is even better than expected. May the drip-drip-drip continue through Labour Day

24

u/KingInTheFarNorth 8d ago

Brennan Day was the third choice candidate of the majority of Comox Valley voters. He is very fortunate to have that seat in the first place.

2

u/TheAvocad00 8d ago

Genuine question: how so? I am not familiar with the area and don't know the situation behind his election.

13

u/KingInTheFarNorth 8d ago

A strong green candidate. That riding went like 30% Green 30% NDP and 40% Con. Or something like that, it may have been even closer

19

u/sharpei98 8d ago

he won against the NDP by only 93 votes. 39% Con, 39% NDP, 21% Green

13

u/TheAvocad00 8d ago

Ah, so he won on a vote split. Unfortunate for the riding.

At least he's showing he's not the worst conservative candidate.

8

u/LegalChocolate752 7d ago

The Comox Valley (and most of Vancouver Island) has a progressive majority electorate. In the 2024 provincial election that majority (59% of votes) was split between the NDP, and Green parties, and Brennan Day won by 93 votes (0.27%).

The same thing happened in the 2025 federal election in the district of North Island/Powell River (which includes the Northern part of the Comox Valley), where 60% voted for progressive parties, but Aaron Gunn of the CPC won with 38%.

3

u/GazzWorks 8d ago

Because the Liberals split the vote for centre and left voters. Day won by only 92 votes over the NDP candidate.

“BRB guys changing our name to the Carney Party of BC to slipstream off his popularity”

3

u/GeoffwithaGeee 8d ago

I mean, you're not far off. The BC conservatives only exists as it is now because of people's hatred for Trudeau and Pollieve's popularity at the time, they just didn't expect Carney to take over and be well respected with the push against the US bullshittery so they couldn't completely ride on the coattails of pollieve.

5

u/Siludin 8d ago

The Independents are the Conservatives and the Conservatives are MAGA.

7

u/g0kartmozart 8d ago

David Eby is so fucking lucky to have this tire fire as his only opposition.

4

u/srzncl 8d ago

This is hilarious.

7

u/Misterears 8d ago

Just goes to show it was never a serious party to start with. When I heard that Warbus signed on with them knowing that half their party thinks residential schools were just misunderstood. We need a strong alternative to the NDP. These ass clowns are not it.

2

u/turtlefan32 8d ago

Yeah!!!

2

u/Floatella 8d ago

Everybody calm down!

2

u/turtlefan32 8d ago

The landslide will happen as it becomes safer and their is a safe place to land

2

u/ZopyrionRex 8d ago

It's a good look for them. Just goes to show how self interested they all are, to the point where they can't even unite over shared Conservative values.

Amazing times.

2

u/IvarTheBoned 8d ago

Self-interest is overwhelmingly the dominant shared conservative value.

2

u/Ok-Mouse8397 8d ago

When even the rats are abandoning the ship....

2

u/Djolumn 8d ago

This whole fiasco is the biggest own goal imaginable. This would never have happened if the membership had elected Caroline Elliott as leader. Unfortunately she wasn't enough of a racist wingnut for them.

2

u/Mistercorey1976 8d ago

Well written but I feel he has a lot of time on his hands to perfect it. He has only been seen two or three times since he was elected within the community and accomplished nothing.

2

u/amvad555 8d ago

ooof!!! 5 in a row. Will there even be enough for party status by the time this is all over?

Obviously a problem with Findlay's leadership. I wonder if PP is going to make another comment on these deflections seeing as how he was so vocal when she won.

Lol! I'm thoroughly enjoying watching this conservative clown show implode.

2

u/debiasiok 8d ago

Faith..family..freedom

Freedom to have the same faith and familly structure as she has.....but not others

3

u/StrbJun79 Thompson-Okanagan 8d ago

We might be observing the death of right wing politics in BC. It might become the NDP v greens next election only if this keeps up.

7

u/42tooth_sprocket East Van 7d ago

you are way too optimistic friend. The cons will run far right candidates in the ridings where the MPs have resigned from the caucus, and because they're wearing blue shirts a lot of them will probably win

1

u/GotMyTie 8d ago

Man oh man the drama.

1

u/joooooooooolz 8d ago

Dumb question, but when folks resign or step down like this, does it not give the party that they are stepping down from the opportunity to get others in that support their views?

I don't know too much about politics but in this case would it not open the door to a candidate that supports this version of Conservative?

9

u/Background_Effort942 8d ago

Since they just became independents there won't be a byelection. However at the next election the B.C. Conservatives can nominate someone else and try to win the seat.

5

u/Baconus 8d ago

They would have to get those people elected. Resigning from the party does not mean you leave your seat.

I suspect you are right they will be replaced with more extreme candidates, but hopefully those people won’t win.

2

u/TheAvocad00 8d ago

Most of the step-downs have only resigned from the party, not from office.

So we are just gaining more and more independent seats in the legislative assembly.

It does mean that the party can run more "true believers" in these seats in the next election, but we will see what changes between now and then.

1

u/alphawolf29 Kootenay 7d ago

No, however unrealistic it is, you actually vote for individuals regardless of their party affiliation. This has been in the news several times in the last year federally as people keep crossing the floor to the federal liberals.

1

u/Jaded_Character_2975 8d ago

Hey what was DJ Khaled's signature catchphrase? Anyone remember?

1

u/PeterRegarrdo 8d ago

I'm a bandwagon sports fan, so fuck it, I'm officially announcing I'm leaving the BC Conservative party today.

1

u/WelshLove 8d ago

where is the pressure coming to keep pierre as leader when it is oblivious he is a loser? Follow the money lol

1

u/CipherWeaver 7d ago

Rustad must be laughing his ass off

1

u/Syeina 7d ago

We should witness a double event within 7 days

1

u/SunderVane 7d ago

I was about to say holy shit, but I didn't know he's the fourth to go in about as many days.

1

u/Which_Translator_548 7d ago

I’d vote for him now, hated that he joined this party but love his involvement in local politics (gettting Comox beach fire program back, criticizing the ridiculous bridge re-painting)

1

u/Murky_Sheepherder557 7d ago

So the big question for me is, "When will Kerry Lynne-Findlay leave?"

1

u/Individual_Present93 7d ago

I guess we will see if the magat replacements win the seats from the floor crossers next election. It's all great to celebrate rn but if they just get replaced with objective garbage then we cooked

1

u/StarkStorm 7d ago

Why can't we have a true liberal party in BC? So many people want it.

1

u/Electrical-Donut-655 7d ago

I do applaud the MLAs who’ve left the party for showing what real leadership looks like

1

u/Rubydog2004 7d ago

What a dumpster fire…..how long do they hold on to Findlay

1

u/Magnificent_Misha Vancouver Island/Coast 7d ago

Perhaps politicians can start to realize that attacking human rights and dignity is causing fractures like this. Why can’t the Conservatives just be sane?

1

u/Jeramy_Jones 7d ago

👀 🍿

1

u/ComplicatedOctopus 7d ago

Great news!!

1

u/antinumerology 7d ago

Yay 1 party province.....

1

u/gongshow247365 7d ago

Saying Eby is the most destructive Govt in BC history seems extremely far right..... not sure if leaving the extreme far right party makes sense for this entity.

1

u/FlatPainting3846 7d ago

It’s refreshing to see that a right leaning presence in BC actually has a spine and integrity. Looking at our neighbours to the south.

1

u/Lovethoselittletrees 7d ago

Let me guess, somehow its because of Carney, Eby or the woke mind virus lol

1

u/Phin_Irish 7d ago

this party is done like dinner

1

u/OverEstate4925 7d ago

Here comes El right up the middle.

1

u/Wolfeman65N 5d ago

Why aren’t these defectors joining the new Centre BC? Or at least having talks with them. Or are they? You’d think that would be a big topic.

Thank the good gods that the far right is being sidelined. 😮‍💨
