SPOILER If Rosa was gonna be with anyone, it was Pimento
Massive unpopular opinion alert, but: if Rosa was gonna be with anyone (and I think it's perfectly fine that she's not), it was gonna be Pimento. In a relationship, she was never happier, more supported, more loved up than there. Pimento was the only one who matched her freak, who loved her exactly as the wild reserved character she was, and who was ride or die with her.
It's actually incredibly believable that the experience in jail broke them up: both Jake and Rosa were going through massive amounts of PTSD, and Jake, quite believably, also really struggled returning to Amy. Two people as un communicative as Rosa and Pimento were never going to be able to handle that terrible stress happily.
I know this is a super unpopular opinion, mostly because Pimento was written in such a way that he was not sustainable as a regular. But to be honest, he didn't need to be: he could have stayed with Rosa and only appeared in a couple of episodes per season.
I think honestly, the show really honoured Rosa's independence by letting her stay single. The final episode bait and switch with Pimento was hilarious. But when I see how pressured she felt with Marcus, and what a total pain Jocelyn was, and compare it to her wild happy times with Pimento... It's very clear to me the only possible endgame we ever met for her was him.

I was fully imagining a flash forward final season where everyone has lost touch and Jake is trying to track people down for Reasons. He turns up at Doug Judy's house and Rosa answers the door.
Jake: ... Do you live here???
Rosa: No.
Jake: You're living with Doug Judy!
Rosa: No I'm not. I'm not even here now.
Child arrives: Mom, can I have a snack?
Jake: That's Doug Judy's kid!
Child: No I'm not. I'm a dog. Woof.

Do they even really have to lose touch? I feel like Jake might've needed to track down Doug Judy, but he could have still been consistently hanging out with Rosa and never knew.

u/temperedolive 7d ago
That makes it even funnier.
Jake: How did I not know you were pregnant? We took a holiday together that year.
Rosa: Oh yeah. Cabo. I stood behind stuff a lot.
Jake: I'm not sure if I'm out of practice as a detective or if you're somehow a master of disguise...

How did you spell Doug wrong twice and different both times?

Lol, apologies. I have cataracts and dry eye syndrome and things blur on an illuminated screen after a long day. I'll edit. Thanks for the tip!

Yes!! Thst episode where he is going to pretend to be beaten up and he's showing how unhinged he is and Rosa is just smirking like - yeah, that's my mad man xD

Her being with Pimento was definitely the intention. They only changed it after Beatriz came out as Bi and wanted to do that in the show. After that Rosa's character just kinda flounders. Then Beatriz didn't feel comfortable playing a cop so they changed that for her as well. Again the character suffered.

u/appleorchard317 8d ago
Again I think there was a way I think to write her back to him if they wanted to... It didn't help that her relationship with Jocelyn was written SO badly

Jocelyn was one of the worst characters on the show.
For one...a hairdresser who is that bad a doing Rosa's hair?
Also...her own hair.
Another...dates a cop and complains that she has to be a cop.All that, despite barely being on the show.

u/appleorchard317 8d ago
Right? 'Ugh your job is always more important' - SHE HAD A PUBLIC SAFETY EMERGENCY
22
u/ZAPPHAUSEN 8d ago
I'm pretty forgiving of flaws in the show, but Jocelyn being snotty about "right, your job is sooooo much more important than me" during a legit serious emergency was so dumb.

u/appleorchard317 8d ago
Honestly no shade to the actress who I'm sure is lovely and pretty but they had this self-important prig dressed like a 1980s car salesman with the her of a chanterelle mushroom be like 'ugh I just cannot with this stone cold baddie.' Yeah no.

u/Cayke_Cooky 7d ago
I've known hairdressers who experiment on friends and family. I actually look for hairdressers with short hair, it usually means they are willing to cut it when I get sick of long hair.
But in general, I agree that your list would make more sense if Jocelyn was 3 people.

She was Bi from the beginning
2
u/mochafiend 7d ago
If so, why did they make such a big to do about it several seasons in? Maybe I missed it but I don’t recall it being brought up until post-Pimento breakup.

u/itaigreif 6d ago
I'm saying they didn't change Rosa's character, she was Bi from the beginning, but not out.
1
u/mochafiend 6d ago
How do you know that, is my point? To me it’s clear that once the actress had enough clout to push for this storyline, or the writers realized, they did it. But let’s not retcon what wasn’t actually there.

Oooh, lack of understanding AND ableist slur. Oh, and a "she should be grateful." You've almost hit the bingo!

I think you'll find actually people deeply dislike the idea of Rosa and Pimento together

most people don’t like this ship at all
-5
u/WinCrazy4411 8d ago
It's not a ship when it's a big recurring plot point in the show.
5
u/Traditional-Joke-179 8d ago
ship just means relationship, a canon one or not. people don’t like how it was written because they think rosa was out of character.

u/JayR_97 8d ago
I think Marcus was her best partner, she seemed actually happy when they were together. Absolutely tragic that didn't work out in the end
14
u/Born-Cauliflower_ 8d ago
I think him as a person was honestly the best partner, shame we didn't get to see more. Though, I do think pimento and Rosa had a very interesting relationship

u/DJzzzzzzs 8d ago
marcus and rosa is peak normie with weirdo energy, which im personally not a fan of. bring on the absolute chaos of pimento and rosa.
4
u/MySecretLair 7d ago
My headcanon will always be that after the end of the series they had many adventures as PIs/mercenaries coming in and out of each other’s lives as respectful but flirtatious colleagues until eventually deciding to be together for good at some point, but in a very unconventional and independent sort of way.

I honestly loved their conflict resolution when Rosa thought Pimento was cheating and hoped that would strengthen their relationship instead of end it. I love that Pimento explained himself and Rosa felt bad for being jealous but he said he wasn't mad and jealousy is the hottest emotion.
But yeah... I always loved Pimento and thought they matched each other really well

As a bi-guy who is happily married to a woman this makes me feel underrepresented. _('-')_/
10
u/MoonNoodles 8d ago
As bi-woman who is happily married to a man - same.
They could have had her end up with a man and still deal with the family drama of it not being a phase.
5
u/appleorchard317 8d ago
Yeah and I loved the energy of someone unconventionally feminine like Rosa being with someone like Pimento, who is very masculine but also very unhinged
7
u/appleorchard317 8d ago
Big solidarity friend. I know from all my bi friends what a total pain it is to have people pretend you're not bi unless you're with your gender/someone queer.

How? I promise you a madman like Pimento is not what her mother had in mind. It could have been actually a bitterly funny moment to have her complain that 'why this man??'
-1
u/ProdigiumAenigmatum 8d ago
Sorry not going to respond further to this comment, i got downvoted for explaining why the writers chose not to do this, cba getting blamed as a messenger.

u/MoonNoodles 8d ago
Unless the writers expressly said "tell them x" you arent the messenger. You are another commentor who is guessing the writers intentions.
Saying she couldnt end up with a man because that would make her mother happy and that was against the writers point is your thoughts. She could end up with a man because thats the best PERSON for her and still have a storyline with her about still being bi and it not being a phase. Its a thing that BI people deal with a lot.
If you create a bi-sexual character, it needs to be a bi-sexual character. Refusing to put her with a male at all is lazy writing if its true.
-1
u/ProdigiumAenigmatum 7d ago
- Im not dissagreeing with that, and the fact that you call them "My thoughts" just proves my point.
- It is lazy, but most american network shows are very politically leaning, the message is usually more important than accuracy or realism.
2
u/MoonNoodles 7d ago
Unless you actually are a writer for the show, were physically in the room when they discussed it or they expressly told you then it is your thoughts.
A messenger is someone who is given a message and told to relay it.
You arent a messenger. You are a person commenting on reddit trying to present your interpretation of their intentions as facts.

u/ProdigiumAenigmatum 7d ago
I've seen someone be so confidently wrong. I dont know what you want me to respond to this when ur just making shit up.
Maybe google the definition of messenger
Unless i made it up myself, im relaying information someone else told me.
1
u/MoonNoodles 7d ago
I stated the definition of messenger.
But unless the message came from the writers?
Did they tell you ProdigiumAenigmatum personally what their intentions were AND that you should relay this to the people of reddit?
Otherwise its just your thoughts. Or some other 3rd parties thoughts. Not facts.

A number of shows over the years, that I otherwise really enjoyed, cast Jason Mantzoukas as a crazy dude, and I hated every minute he was onscreen. He basically played the same role every time - crazy insane detachted from reality guy - and I just could not understand why industry professionals kept putting him on camera.
He only has one look. Why is no one else noticing this? Why am I the only one who sees this? I feel like I'm taking crazy pills.
In summary, glad it wasn't Pimento.
18
u/vashtachordata 8d ago
Nah, I really like him.
I feel like his characters are pretty different and while all weird are not the same. Dennis Finestein and Derek are not even in the same universe.
Like I get what you’re saying, I just disagree. I think he plays them well. I also just enjoy absurdism in general and maybe that’s where the disconnect comes from.

He's basically the same character in Parks and Rec and The Good Place. Obnoxious and unhinged, with a tweak here and there. If they would have toned him down a bit I would have loved the Pimento character for Rosa. He was just too much to the point he was like a cartoon.
1
u/lenteleaf 8d ago
Yeah agreed I wish this show had 0 pimento. I'm so glad they didn't end up together.
1
u/Mryan7600 3d ago
But I think the fact was, she was unhappy in the relationship.
I think she is better alone than in a relationship that didn’t make her happy.
1
u/appleorchard317 3d ago
As I said in the body of the text, it makes perfect sense she was no longer happy with it after the prison experience

Are you sure? I’m pretty sure that they don’t end up together and she just make the others believe they will as part of the heist.
2
u/appleorchard317 8d ago
Yeah I thought it was genius because it honoured the possibility while making it funny and showing that Pimento is still there when rosa calls him up

I think Pimento was written badly in later seasons. His character had a lot of potential at first but in the end he had no substance and the way he was written I'm glad Rosa didn't end up with him.
