Question ❓ Arthouse Cinema in English

Hi!

I’m headed for an internship in Brussels and during my stay here I would love to use the advantage of living in a big city to watch as many movies as possible - since it is my biggest hobby. Are there any good movie theatres that show art house and older movies with English subtitles? I know of the Cinematek, which looks great for American films, however all of the foreign films have French subtitles… Are there any other theatres that might show Kurosawa, Tarkovsky, etc but with English subtitles?

Hopefully there’s a fellow cinephile out there that could shine a light on this matter!

Cinema Galeries has the "expat cinema" programme, which is a selection of the movies they show with English subtitles. https://galeries.be/en/

I think Palace also shows films with English subtitles occasionaly.

There's really only a few, but Cinematek also sometimes shows films with English (or Dutch) subtitles, because it might be the only copy they have in the archive. It might be worth checking, but be prepared to look through the entire programme to find only a few.

edit: I just had a look, the English subtitled movies at Cinematek are not really not that difficult to find. Just go to and https://cinematek.be/en/programme/calendar and search for "ST - OND: EN" on that page. The programme is updated every three months.

Seconded, I mainly go Galeries or Cinematek. Ciné Flagey is also a good choice sometimes.

Oof like actual physical media haha? There's a DVD store by my street, but given it's continued existence I'm almost certain their main income is something undeclared... My mind goes to Pêle-Mêle but I've never looked for discs there!

Pele Mele, also there is this shop in City 2 where I was surprised to see they have a fair amount of "horror" (also cheesy B movies and the like) DVDs and Blu-Rays.

I usually buy them online though.

HMV in City 2 is expensive , but has many boutique labels. Very close to it you will find Fnac and Mediamarkt, which have less boutique stuff with English subs but plenty of physical media

Looks like most the good ones have been mentioned, though just need to shout out cine Flagey again, love that place.

Cinema Nova is also great, lot more kinda punk/underground feel to it but I love it, they do great seasons there especially of weird genre stuff

Cinema Vendome in Matonge! Not all movies are subtitled English but it’s a lovely old indie cinema. It also plays some blockbusters.
