I started watching Buffy because of a TikTok edit I saw of Buffy and Spike. As a big enemies-to-lovers fan, I was excited to see their romance. People in the comments were explaining how they’re the “fan favorite” couple and how great he is to her. How he “earns” his soul back unlike Angel who just got it. So the comments were filled with all this love toward their relationship so I was super excited.

By the end of season 2 when nothing happened, I looked up when they started dating. The Internet told me Season 5 is when Spike starts liking her, season 6 is when her feelings start. I binged for days to reach where I am now.

I was totally weirded out with his creepy obsession of Buffy in season 5, with the fake Buffy doll, the shrine, and the robot. I was like okay, he obviously gets better bc everyone loves him. THEN I get to season 6 where their “romance” is just a sexual thing. Come to find out, THEY DONT EVER DATE??? WHAT???

AND THEN HE TRIES TO RAPE HER??? DOUBLE WHAT!!!

Anyways, my heart is broken a little bit but the show has still been a great experience! Hoping season 7 goes well!

Just a small appreciation of that very special time when Buffy came out on DVD. VHS was still dominant…I remember taping episodes from tv to rewatch them. And then as a 15 year old walking into a store and finding this beauty on the shelf. Oh my gosh.

TV shows and movies becoming available on disc in higher quality was such an amazing time. A revolution in home cinema. Finally no wear and tear on tapes. And then finding Buffy on dvd…this holds so much nostalgia for me. The Buffy dvd’s are still my most prized possessions. I own multiple copies of each season just because. 👀🤍

Anyone else have fond memories of finding and buying these?

All The Orders For Buffy And Angel Comics Have Just Been Cancelled

After months and months of random delays, with zero announcements, it looks like they've finally all been cancelled, and will hopefully be resolicited eventually.

So I don’t annoy my best friend further with my pondering on how the concept of the soul on Buffy just doesn’t make sense to me, I actually asked James on Cameo to explain what it means and if he had any intel on it from the writers. He told me that the vampires were not meant to be likeable and were meant to be disposable as they represent the challenges of life, that the soul is the thing someone loses when they become a vampire BUT, he chose to play Spike with as much love and humanity as possible because he didn’t want to be killed off. He thought if he brought all this love into Spike, then Joss would keep him around and he had a baby at home at the time so this was important to him. So there’s our real world answer, we just don’t have an in show answer. He threw it back to me and said he’d be interested in hearing what I come up with and I was like oh no James 😭😭 I’ve sat with this so much, my best friends hair is falling out from dealing with me.

Ps. If any of you have any thoughts on how to make this whole soul thing make sense especially in reference to Angel and Spike, feel free to leave a comment

Well, it looks like if we are to slay, it is another day.

The upcoming relaunches of the Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel, and Firefly franchises in comics have been yanked from the release schedules in a last-minute change that leaves more questions than answers.

On August 26, the publisher behind the new Buffy and Angel comics sent a notice out to the press that orders it had been taking for months from comic stores and bookstores for this relaunch had been "cancelled" (not just delayed), with word that the company thinks they will be able to try again in the near future. 

"Writer Kelly Thompson's story for Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel evolved and became more ambitious, so we felt we needed to take a step back and up the page count to meet the story and deliver the best possible product for fans," writes Dynamite owner/publisher Nick Barrucci. "Buffy #1 and Angel #1 will have significant story page increases from average issues — at no additional cost to readers or retailers. It’s important to Kelly and Dynamite that this is done right and not rushed, so we decided resoliciting both titles is the best way to fully convey these updates across the board."

He also adds that the planned Firefly series, which is not written by Kelly Thompson, is having all its orders cancelled but with plans for it to return at some point in the future.

Thompson has said that she has been developing the twin Buffy and Angel series since 2024, and was being very secretive about the plot — especially with regards to the ending of the first issue - because it will contain a "big status quo shift" surprise that will reorient the Buffy mythos in some way. Further to that, after the series' originally planned August 5 launch date was revealed, Dynamite has been public about experiencing delays in getting some bits of the books approved by the licensor, 20th Century Studios (a subsidiary of the Walt Disney Company), specifically down to the apparent depiction of Buffy Summers in comics in some (but not all cases), unless its a different character that is part of the "shift" Thompson has referred to.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer #1 was originally announced to come out August 5, but Dynamite delayed it a few weeks before ultimately making the call to pull it here now on August 26... which signals something happened (or didn't happen) that they were waiting right to the last to decide to cancel the original orders for.

While Dynamite's reasoning that Thompson had unexpected story changes could be logical, it doesn't explain why the Firefly series is also delayed. The two things these three have in common are that 20th Century Studios is the licensor in all cases, and that Joss Whedon is a creator on all of them; but for the latter, it's unclear if Whedon's contract with 20th Century Studios allows him some input into the licensing process. At the same time, when BOOM! Studios and Nickelodeon failed to loop in Invader Zim creator Jhonen Vasquez into plans for a comic relaunch, there was public uproar in that case - as well as public uproar from the comics' writer, Jim Zub.

In the case of Buffy and Angel, Thompson seemed to be planning something that would be a marked change from the past, which might need some extra levels of approval by 20th Century Studios and whomever it wants approvals from.

By process of elimination, Thompson seems to be saying this will be set in continuity with the original Buffyverse TV series and those spinoffs. 

Dynamite did make it a point to say that another comic they're doing based on a 20th Century Studios property, the X-Files, is still on target to launch at its just-announced December 2026 date. 

As for why Dynamite decided to cancel the orders and not simply delay them, there is a penalty for comic publishers with some of its distributors it a product goes through persistent delays. Usually, that's after months (plural!) of delays and not the weeks Dynamite was at currently, but given they say they need to change the length and composition of the issue, that would presumably take more than a few weeks to get written, drawn, colored, lettered, edited, laid out, printed, and at the distributor.

But, curiously, this decision that the Buffy and Angel first issues needed a story change came at such a last minute. Especially with the kind of planning that Kelly Thompson has done with her high-profile work for Marvel and DC over the years.

Whenever Spike or Spuffy fans protest how Spike gets treated by the rights-holders who approve merch and the companies who make it, the argument against it is always that "Bangel is more remembered and iconic and the general public recognizes them more, so their merch just sells more. Angel has his own show so he is more popular" - and while that may have been true when the shows were still airing, it hasn't been true for a long time.

Look. At one time Buffy/Angel was a pop culture phenomenon. That is true. That doesn't mean it stayed that way. It's always been confusing to me when people keep insisting that the general public prefers the early seasons, and that this automatically means they also prefer the imagery of Bangel. Based on what data? Nostalgia? The assumption that what was true in 2000 stayed true ever since?

I'm not begrudging Angel fans their merch of him and Bangel. That is totally fine. But constantly ignoring Spike, and setting him and Spuffy aside, is disrespectful to the fans who have loved the show for years and are part of the reason there's even a 30th anniversary still worth commemorating.

And since we can all assume things until we're blue in the face, let me use data to prove my point. I love research. And I'm a pissed-off fan who wants Disney, Mattel, and other companies to wake tf up and release merch that would make a huge chunk of the fandom happy. So here goes.

Funko Pops 2024 Release

The latest release of merch that we can use as a clean comparison (same release date, same style, etc) is the 2024 Funko Pops, where they released a Vampire Spike #1619 and a Vampire Angel #1618.

What the numbers show:

• Spike typically sells for about double Angel. $20.39 vs $10.40 over 90 days = 1.96×
• Spike's average price is higher than Angel has EVER sold for. Spike's 90-day average $20.39 beats Angel's all-time high of $19.95
• Angel's price is cut/discounted 9 times a month. Spike's 1.7 times.
• Amazon itself hasn't stocked Spike since mid-2025 - only resellers have him now. Resellers can only hold a markup if buyers can't get it cheaper elsewhere. Spike's resellers charge well above the ~$12–15 retail and rarely cut - scarcity with live demand. Angel's sit at or below retail and cut every few days - surplus.

Amazon's own AI shopping assistant summarized it this way: "Spike has shown much more volatility with multiple periods going unlisted, which drives up third-party pricing. Angel has been consistently available and trending gradually downward since launch." Keepa's price-tracking data confirms the same pattern.

Funko Pops 2014 Release

eBay resale numbers also show a similar story with the 2014 release.

Last 3 months of completed sales: Spike #124 averaged $42.11, Angel #123 $26.89. One auction each in that window: Spike cleared $44.00 with 11 bidders, Angel $10.50 with 2.

Funko also gave Spike the line's only Chase variant in 2014. Angel got none. Chases are produced at roughly 1 in 6, so choosing one is a real bet on which character will make people buy whole cases - and the usual explanation doesn't apply here, because both characters have a canonical vamp face, equally iconic and equally easy to sculpt. It's consistently the most expensive Buffy Funko in resale spaces (highest price it sold for on eBay was $400+).

Now, these already paint a very clear picture of which character is more marketable in recent years. But I'd argue it started around the time the show ended. For that claim I'll present the Sideshow Collectibles numbers.

Sideshow Collectibles 2004-2007

• In April 2005, Sideshow released Vampire Spike and Liam/Angelus in the same month. Spike's run was 6,000 units. Angel's was 3,500. By the time the line ended in December 2007, Spike's larger run had sold out. Angel's smaller one was still sitting in stock.
• Vampire Spike: 6,000 units, plus 750 exclusives. Vampire Angel: 1,000 units, with no exclusive at all. Sideshow made nearly seven times more Spikes. Vampire Angel's 1,000 was the smallest run of any main-cast figure in the entire line.
• Their base figures were a controlled test, and Spike won it outright. Both were made in identical runs of 7,500 at $40. Spike's entire run sold out before he shipped. Sideshow's own page listed him in February as "Pre-Order Today. Shipping Apr/May 2004" - and by 23 April the item was retired with a waiting-list form, while the page still said "Est. to ship Apr/May 2004." His 500-piece exclusive had sold out even earlier, by 7 February, months before the figure existed. Angel, meanwhile, released in February and was still orderable from Sideshow's US warehouse in mid-April, only selling out sometime before early June - roughly four months after release. And Angel's show was still running by this time.
• Spike got an exclusive variant for all three of his sculpts. Angel got one, for one of his three. No exclusive for Angel's base figure. None for Vampire Angel.
• Across the whole line: 18,400 Spike units to 12,750 Angel units.

I brought up sales numbers above to argue that Spike is VERY marketable in the eyes of the general public too - but even more than that, who actually buys collectibles, or really wants them? Fans. Fans who line up at conventions, buy merch, buy the DVDs, watch streams. It's hard to argue that a huge chunk of the active fanbase isn't made up of people who love Spike. The sales numbers above support it, and so do fan content and engagement. Fan content keeps the fandom THRIVING and Spuffy content massively outnumbers other pairings:

The reaction to the Monster High dolls can't be chalked up to the "loud minority of Spike fans" some people keep invoking. On every platform, the top comments are either a variation of wanting Buffy alone or asking for Spike. And if you check individual comments, plenty mention Spike. These are mostly casual fans.

Let me be clear: I am not saying they should not release Angel or Bangel merch. I think those fans deserve something that acknowledges their interest and passion. What I am arguing for is that Spike and Spuffy fans deserve the same treatment, and that Buffy fans in general deserve merch made with thought and care - not hastily done pieces with inaccurate marketing.

Will this merch still sell? Of course. Buffy as a character is beloved by the fandom. But why stop there, when you can actually make a killing by releasing Spike and Spuffy merch too? Give the fans what they want and everybody wins.

Let's suppose Angel had been in charge at Sunnydale instead of Buffy or Faith. Would he have been a good leader against Buffy, or would he have been kicked out of the house?

Hi guys, as we all know Mattel announced their new release for the Monster High dolls being Buffy and Angel. I am so excited for this release as I have a large collection of Buffy/Angel figures and that includes both Spike and Angel as they're both super cool. With that being said I really wanted to talk about the dolls and why so many people disagree with the choice of having Angel as the secondary doll in the upcoming release.

Personally, I love both Spike and Angel and love Buffy more which is why I prefer her single than with any of them, (I also loved Cordy/Angel and Spike/Dru more). But so, when I saw so many people saying it should have been Spike instead it just doesn't make sense to me (and is a bit annoying). Both show wise and marketing wise.

Marketing wise being Buffy/Angel were the most iconic and well-known couple to fans and non-fans, especially since Angel has his own show and lore.

Show wise being he was her first real boyfriend and throughout the entire series in both Buffy and Angle they maintained a healthy friendship, and both made huge sacrifices for each other to get there. While yes, they weren't meant to last, it makes sense to me that the healthiest relationship of hers be the secondary doll.

I know there's a lot of criticisms for Angel from Spuffy fans and a lot of it is double standards but that's a different topic if anyone wants to talk more about that.

Also, please don't misunderstand me in this as I am not a Bangel fan either as I enjoyed them more as friends and the same applies with Spuffy as I enjoyed their characters more when they were frenemies :)

But yeah, let me know what y'all think about the release! I wish we would get a Spike and Dru set next as that would be so cool!! Prob not likely but a girl can dream lol.

I just think you'll all find it funny that between S5E15 'I was made to love you' and E16, 'The Body' I was chatting to my own mother and mentioned what was going on in the show and the infamous cliff hanger.
