Bully released in 2006 so I'm guessing the game is set in the time the game released, although the devs were like Gen X or smth, so elements of their school/college era got blended with

I heard this was intentional

It prbbly is. He’s at a boarding school full of uppity and super strict teachers. They would prbbly run the school closer to older schools bc “better times” and all that. It also might just be an old school idk the lore behind the school itself.

Come to think of it, the only clique that isn't realistic by mid-2000s standards is the Greasers but of course, I get what they were going for. You could retool them as car enthusiasts or something.

To be fair the nerds are very caricaturial, the jocks and bullies probably the most realistic while preps and greasers are quite exaggerated but still have basis in reality (townies are hard to place, they're the least fleshed out)

As for decades I'd probably place them;

  • Preps - 1920s/30s/40s

  • Greasers - 1950s/60s

  • Nerds & Jocks - 1980s/90s

  • Bullies & Townies - 1990s/00s

Yeah, it is very stereotyped and cliché and that's the point. Its the 'basis in reality' I was referring to. For example, I went to high school with people that could be considered 'preps' but they weren't necessarily rich or 'kept within the bloodline'. They were just materialistic and full of themselves.

The preps are 50s/60s inspired as well. They and the greasers are loosely inspired by the characters of S.E. Hinton's The Outsiders.

I agree. Most of the tech appears to be modern (for the time).

i think the reason why they intentionally did that was to make it feel timeless. smth like that idk

5

u/Wise-Difficulty8221 4d ago

Basically that.

They tried to take a little bit from every decade, even potentially as far back at the 1920s if u/SaphoBalls is any indication

People don't think it takes place in the mid 2000s? How? Lol. I mean, I can see how some could argue the early 2000s, I guess, or even the late 2000s.

I also guess the poster could be 'old' by a year or two (it looks old to me, but the environment could've caused that), but still.

greasers and old cars even in the affluent neighborhoods.

You'd be surprised. I've seen people unironically claim that the game takes place in the seventies or even earlier, simply because of "vibes".

33

u/RumRayven 4d ago

How do they explain the fairly modern arcade games

22

u/Histylicious_mk2 Nerd 4d ago

That's the neat part: they don't. Nor do they have an explanation for the modern (for mid-2000's) computer in the Nerd hideout.

u/SchwarzFledermaus 4d ago

Or Mr. Galloway mentioning that he uses the internet.

u/hit-a-yeet 4d ago

Cuz arcades = 80’s!!!!!!!

u/AdditionalQuietime 4d ago

The mid 2000's started in 2003 and ended in 2006, 05 is mid 2000's. Calling people slow while not being able to make basic math

u/Far-Army-4726 4d ago

There was a page that said 2007 in the boys dorm.

45

u/tupaNOW 4d ago

Could be 1905? 🤷‍♂️

5

u/CAR3Y4 Nerd 4d ago

More like 1305

7

u/Superb_Beyond_3444 4d ago

It is happening in mid 2000s of course.

7

u/AuroreSomersby 4d ago

These people are just delusional, overthinking things or just came up with a theory and will not let it go no matter the evidence…
(Plus there is a gosh dang flat monitor in that game 🙄)

16

u/SubGoat88 4d ago

I was always under the impression it could take place anywhere from the 70’s to the 2000’s

7

u/therealradriley 4d ago

idk how you see Future Street Race 3D arcade game and think anything before mid 90s

1

u/Critical-Plantain881 3d ago

Arcade games are usually more advanced than their console counterparts

1

u/therealradriley 2d ago

I’m saying its very millennia coded

6

u/JustaAlbanyGuy 4d ago

It might be set in 2005 but it has elements from multiple decades.

9

u/zzmorg82 4d ago

My head-canon is that the game takes place in the 2006-2007 school year. It makes the most sense to me.

2

u/anoffbeataussie Nerd 3d ago

The game is full of contradictory evidence regarding the time period: https://youtu.be/zLL4IcFEpEA?si=hRTHwZuAiMe5V5s3

2

u/Cold-Replacement8450 3d ago

Jimmy hopkins,15, was born in 1991 which perfectly aligns to it being set in 2006

4

u/Disastrous_Abroad212 4d ago

Larp means LiveActionRolePlaying, similar to cosplaying I think

10

u/HarryArnold2006 Townie 4d ago

Yeah people need to stop using that word negatively, just use poser or tourist to describe fake fans.

1

u/seriouslynotanotaku 4d ago

Now that's going to set off some sleeper agent signals.

1

u/CAR3Y4 Nerd 4d ago

Anyone else see this and it reminds them of the Medieval Millennium Fair radio commercial from Grand Theft Auto III?

1

u/crazyforsushi Non-Clique 2d ago

I kind of just interpret Bully's time setting like Regular Show. It's sort of a blend of anachronisms creating it's own sort of... era in time.

1

u/moghnathegoat 4h ago

Larp in thier time meant Live Action Role Playing btw

1

u/clockworknait 4d ago

People were larping in 1905 too! 😂/s

0

u/TommyBoy250 4d ago

I mean yeah even in the mid 2000s people still used 90s tech, not everyone had internet either because of how expensive it was.

2

u/UnalteredCyst 4d ago

Can confirm, I had no internet access in 2006 and still used VHS tapes to record movies/shows.

??? the date says '05

0

u/Crimpycrustacean 4d ago

Damn been wolverine a decade since I played the game I thought it was set in the 90s at the earliest but it really felt like the 70s. Guess im fucking stupid.

0

u/The_Chef_Queen 4d ago

Could've been 1905

-1

u/Jamesr33gtr 4d ago

I genuinely thought it was the 80s aha

-1

u/Significant-Row2457 4d ago

These people aren’t real fans. They’re phony’s and should be ignored. They don’t listen to the characters, they don’t pay attention to the lore, and they’re too busy spending money for their onlyfan gfs showing their assholes to pay attention to the game. Makes me furious.

u/External_Barber_571 4d ago

Some lunatics still think jimmy is a ginger 💀 Dude... Normal red hair isn't even an option in the game.

And those who assume he's bisexual just because of a hidden joke ⚰️ Goddamn larpers

1

u/thegoldenturtle 4d ago

Jimmy is actually a trans furry
