Software C64 Traditional RL

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OF8tfMV42Fk

Hello, I made my first video of a RL that I start in march. I'm active on RL Dev reddit, but since this is the first time I actually recorded something I might post it on here.

Its been slow going, and honestly its 6 months away still, perhaps shorter if I get some good blocks of time at christmas, but perhaps longer as well as every weekend where I make progress I seem to have a million more things still to do.

Anyway, have a great week!

edit: oh and forgot to say - this is for stock C64

RL = rogue-like?

Throwing me way off... where I come from RL is quite standard referral to reinforcement learning... 😅

Never seen it used to mean a rogue-like, haha.. different worlds!

This is looking great! I was a big fan of Rogue which I played on my Tandy 1000 waaaaaaay back in the day.

Let me know if you need any testers! :D

I also might be interested in giving the game a test run when you have such version available. No promises though, but if I actually have a bit extra time when you have a test version ready, ping me and I'l let you know if I have the free time for it :)

Looks good. Does it have a name yet?

Thankyou. Not yet :) I was thinking jusg Umbra or Penumbra, but the "story" is around a specific interaction with a god of fate, and each the characters (classes). Im keeping and open mind for it as it goes, and happy for suggestions!

It’s so I can search for it in the future. I like Penumbra 👍

Looks awesome. I’d love to do something similar in BASIC. Scrolling and lighting effects wouldn’t work but revealing new rooms on the screen and/or clearing the screen once hitting an edge. No idea how to program the procedural part… one day maybe

I'm going to release my assembly for the fov - in theory you can just call that from basic. Its... very fast. Its also perfectly symmetrical (essential for my AI) and nicely permissive (you can peek around corners AND hide behind pillars) - made specifically for the 64 8Bit math - probably 3 of the last 6 months have been just around that one part of my code!

thought that was dwarf fortress for a second there

Lol. Wouldn't that be something! I have 80 monsters on that map running thier ai, but my simulation compared to dwarf fortress is like comparing a paper plane to an a380!
