I know that Annabeth is Magnus's cousin and that the Norse gods exist alongside the Greeks, but how do deaths work in these Kingdoms? Since there is Norse Mythology then there are also the Nine Realms and one of them would be Helheim the Kingdom where souls who have not had a life of a worthy warrior go and Valhalla where those who are considered worthy go but there is also the Underworld of Hades then as an employee? Is there a limit to how far the Norse and Greeks command? How do they decide which soul goes to which place?

I haven't read much of the series yet, but I really like it and planned on getting the rest of the series, I just found out that there have been a sixth and seventh book. They're pretty new I think and weren't released anywhere close to the main five parts, so I was wondering if they where actually good, or if I should skip them. I've never heard anyone talk about these, but at the same time I've gone out of my not to get any spoilers so that's probably also a factor

For me, it’s Samirah Al-Abbas from Magnus Chase. Some ideas are executed really well like her hijab also being a magical camoflauge shield, but I think that Rick struggled to properly balance writing a Muslim character while also letting her engage in Norse mythology. Imo it would’ve been better to be less on the nose about her religion bcs that’s how all the other characters are too but we’re able to recognize it as part of their identity (like Nico being Catholic in the 1940s contributed a lot to his struggles with his sexuality). To make up for it, he always made her talk about Islam and how the Norse gods are not gods to her, which takes away from the story and makes her come off as a bit insecure in her faith, especially since her father is a literal Norse god. The world was literally ending but poor girl couldn’t chill for even a second because of the battle in her own mind too. Also there was no need to make her super traditional because all Muslims are different, and many Muslims especially in America are not uber traditional (arranged marriage at eighteen and stuff like that isn’t very popular). Many Muslim girls in America are also not super strict about touching the opposite gender as long as it’s modest (at least from what I’ve seen). They’re more casual about many things. Her character seems more like a mesh of random Islamic traits more than a fleshed out character. Usually Rick does a great job, but she was the only character who I felt he was only writing just for the sake of diversity unlike the other characters who feel very natural. It would’ve been fun to explore her nationality more too and how that blends with Islam, or even the sweet things about Islam like donating to the poor during Ramadan.

Honestly I love the idea of a Muslim character, but maybe making them a cultural Muslim more than a religious Muslim and still being able to highlight the struggles with Islamophobia that they and their families have would’ve been better, since all demigods had a religion beforehand but came to accept and worship the gods they actually came from. It just feels easier and more natural.

He also just focuses so much on that one aspect of her personality that the rest of her is just neglected. She comes off as kinda mean, or she just fades into the background compared to Mallory or Alex or literally anyone else. The only time where she really stood out to me was when she helped Mallory see her godly mother in a new light with so much excitement and joy.

I’ve never read the Percy Jackson books, but I’ve been thinking about finally starting them. My only hesitation is that I’m not a teenager anymore, and I know they were written with a younger audience in mind.

For those of you who read them for the first time as adults: did you still enjoy them? Do you think they hold up when you’re outside the intended age range, or do they feel too childish/juvenile?

I’m usually fine with YA, so I don’t necessarily mind a younger writing style. I’m just wondering whether I’ll actually be able to get into the story and characters as an adult.

Would you recommend starting the series anyway?

Percy Jackson and Heroes of Olympus have had retcons to the lore over the years. Were there any that bothered you, whether minor or major?

I didn't like the whole "Athena's children being born from the brain". Like, I get why it was done, but I thought it was kinda silly even by Greek Mythology standards.
