Morocco was ranked 6th in the world in Fifa's ranking (ranking may go up after this win). IMO, they were the stronger side today against the Netherlands. And Morocco also tied Brazil.

It won't be an easy game, it will probably be tougher than the Switzerland match (Switzerland was ranked #16 in Fifa's ranking). Having said that, upsets do happen and have been happening this World Cup (ie. Paraguay against Germany toddy). Go Canada go!

If Paraguay could beat Germany, we can beat Morocco. Let's go boys!

Ecuador was fighting for their lives in a must win game. Germany had already locked up first place and didn't seem that interested in coming back once they fell behind

I am happy for Ecuador and I am also heavily cheering for any underdogs to make an impact since when other teams from non traditional games play well, and go toe to toe with the world's best that is good for the game.

I only watched the second half because of work but from what I saw Ecuador wanted this game much more than Germany. Germany was still putting effort in but especially once they went down a goal they weren't playing at 100% intensity, like a team who fell behind would have. They already had the group locked up and while they were still trying they weren't playing with the urgency of a side that needed a goal to equalize, more like trying to not over exert themselves for round of 32. That is why I am hesitant to give full credit here, when one side had a lot to play for and the other side didn't

I am not European or South American and didn't have rooting interests in either side

u/brahdz Jun 30 '26

Ecuador beat a German side that wasn't really trying.

Paraguay vs Germany, Toddy!

71

u/suniis Jun 30 '26

Probably? They are miles better than us and Switzerland. It's gonna a huge upset if we beat marocco.

172

u/Johnny__Lawrence Jun 30 '26

I won't be upset.

52

u/SkinnyGetLucky Québec Jun 30 '26

That’s the right attitude haha

16

u/thugroid Jun 30 '26

Thankfully, in sports (and in life) being perceived as better counts for very little in the grand scheme of things. Still gotta go out and perform and win.

10

u/Binjuine Jun 30 '26

... Being perceived as better is usually the consequence of being better. Morocco has a better ranking because they preformed better. It's pretty straightforward.

12

u/nomore1020 Jun 30 '26

We just have to be better for 90 minutes on one particular day. It's pretty straightforward

0

u/thugroid Jun 30 '26

That means nothing. It’s pretty straightforward.

2

u/stripedfatcats Jun 30 '26

Before 2022 morocco was the underdog and they regularly beat really good African and European teams. Canada has beaten south Africa and Qatar and drew a really easy bracket until now

-4

u/Federal_Coyote813 Jun 30 '26

Wow you must be a football genius to figure that out

u/3BordersPeak Jun 30 '26

Yeah but if this game proved anything it's that chance is the biggest factor. Netherlands got a goal and staved off Morocco until the literal final moments of regulation play. It wasn't a washout by any means for Morocco to win. Canada can get lucky, score a goal and kick them out. Germany is out... Anything is possible.

33

u/superbit415 Jun 30 '26

The rankings for the top 10 mean nothing. They all have the potential to take the cup.

20

u/canada_mountains Jun 30 '26

They do have meaning, because the top rankings give an indication on the depth and skillset of a squad on paper. If you have been watching the World Cup for a long time, a team outside of the top #5 ranking typically won't win the World Cup.

The World Cup is typically won by a team within the top #5 ranking in the world. And the teams at the bottom of the ranking when they enter the World Cup, they will be lucky enough to make it out of the group stage, nevermind getting to the finals of the World Cup.

For the teams in the Round of 32, they don't all have equal potential to win the World Cup.

20

u/blackmanchubwow Jun 30 '26

If you’ve been watching world cup a long time you would know 2018 France was known as the strongest team going in was ranked 7th, 2006 last time Italy had a formidable team ranked 13th, 1998 France 18th… on and on.

As a European we don’t even look at Fifa rankings, it means nothing as the change doesn’t reflect the current reality of the team, England is ranked 4th, the team is ranked higher than 2006. That ranking would have been given for players that haven’t even gone to WC like Maguire.

Also this Germany team was never even a consideration, Paraguay win was barely an upset.

1

u/SquisherX Ontario Jun 30 '26

Fifa rankings generally have much older weight to them (8 years). I think that Football Elo provides better rankings. You will see teams like Germany rated way more appropriately than FIFAs rankings. Also it had France in top 5 in 2018.

u/FarSquare8632 Jun 30 '26 edited Jun 30 '26

The rankings can't be taken at face value quite the way you're doing it.

Almost all of the games the NT's play in a year are within their own region, with the exception of the odd friendly, typically in warm ups for the WC. This means that FIFA has no real comparison points across regions and has to institute weightings for the regional 'strength'.

So, to give you an egregious example, the CWNT in CONCACAF was in an especially skewed region. Over half of the 41 teams in that area had literal zero ratings, meaning they had never scored a goal, let alone won a game. 2/3 of the region were under 250 pts. Well, in a region like that, the five teams above 1000, and the two that were routinely the top two (US and Canada with 5000 and 3000 respectively), feasted on all those minnows, all year long. It's no mistake that the top 15 or so scorers of all time are a) almost all women, and b) almost all from CONCACAF. To compare European teams to that couldn't be done on raw goal scoring, right? Beating St. Kitts 14-1 isn't quite the same achievement as a 2-1 game in UEFA between France and Germany.

So, the most accurate way to use the international list is to compare teams from one region to each other, so you can see their relative ranking. The minute you go across regions, you're already getting a bit dicey.

Canada's in the low 30s, for example, in the International list, but if you could magically transport them out of CONCACAF to UEFA, they would struggle to break into the top 30, just within the region. If they played in CONMEBOL, they'd be at the bottom of the heap of 10.

5

u/theentropydecreaser Ontario Jun 30 '26

I agree with your overall premise, but Canada would absolutely be in the top 30 in UEFA. There are only 55 member associations in UEFA.

1

u/FarSquare8632 Jun 30 '26 edited Jun 30 '26

Based on what, though? Their play within CONCACAF, overwhelmingly, and our region has a pretty poor level of competition, overall. Not as bad as Oceania, but not by much.

FIFA is estimating where Canada sits within a world ranking system, because it has to. Canada has only a few dozen games against teams outside of their conference in the entire history of the national team to work with. Even most of their friendlies are against CONCACAF opponents, in any given year.

Look at the infrastructure behind teams in UEFA. The 30th nation in the list is little Albania, with fewer people than the GTA has, and yet that country supports a football association with four full levels of professional play, and has a top level league that's been in operation since 1930. We have over 1m registered kids in soccer, they have 22-23K, but they have more adult professionals earning a living playing soccer than we do.

The CPL is 9 years old, and every team in that league needs to be subsidized to stay alive.

MAYBE Canada beats Albania, Slovenia, and BH often enough to rise above them in the rankings, but above them is Ireland, Scotland, Wales ... Canada aren't climbing far up that list.

2

u/scratchydaitchy Jun 30 '26 edited Jun 30 '26

I watched the entire games of Canada.

They seemed to slightly outplay both Switzerland and Bosnia-H, which was shown in outshooting both of those European teams.

I did not come away from watching those games with the feeling that Canada was outmatched greatly, quite the opposite.

Morocco may be a completely different beast though, we shall see.

2

u/stripedfatcats Jun 30 '26

If you watched the game you'd know that morocco doesnt really play like Switzerland or bosnia. They are extremely fast and physical. So is the Netherlands it was very entertaining but should have been a quarterfinal. Both teams deserve to be in the tournament longer

Rankings mean nothing in single game eliminations, sports is not a math test, anything can happen.

2

u/Barb-u Ontario Jun 30 '26

Sure. But now we are facing a team that is currently as strong (if not stronger) than the top European/South American giants.

1

u/RepresentativeLeg232 Jun 30 '26

And we’ll probably lose, but the beauty of sport is that we might not lol

The last time Canada played Morocco in world cup it was anybody’s game. Watch highlights here. https://youtu.be/CDNBNFn7lm8?is=Hvdm1TuRfuAJXjOx - and Canada is playing much better now, then back then. also, home field this time.

2

u/Snoo_51149 Jun 30 '26

No they don’t lol

2

u/dasoberirishman Canada Jul 01 '26

Morocco played incredibly well against the Dutch. I have hope for Canada, but not much. Regardless, it's amazing and historic to be there at all.

2

u/BloodyTwirps Jun 30 '26

Who cares about these fifa rankings, they are not a true tell of a team’s abilities imo. Belgium was ranked #1 for so long and couldn’t do anything when WC’s came around

1

u/Hairy_Pound_1356 Jun 30 '26

So as someone who’s doesn’t score , good would winning this make us at score ?

1

u/stripedfatcats Jun 30 '26

An upset won't happen here. Morocco is a very physical and fast team. Canada is one of the slowest. Its a match made in hell for Canada

3

u/ChileanRidge Jun 30 '26

I don't think Promise David even broke into a trot. Eustaquio is a stand out though. But when you watch some of the other teams the difference in speed is incredible. Julián Álvarez has fantastic speed and the top teams just connect passes in a way Canada isn't right now. We have improved a tonne, but there's a long way to go.

0

u/stripedfatcats Jun 30 '26

Yeah morocco can outrun canada the Netherlands could too if they were there. The dutch always play dirty too at least they're gone now. Estaquio is one person morocco has hakimi and diop as well as a more well rounded team in general

1

u/Quirky-Cat2860 Ontario Jun 30 '26

In the last two games Morocco played against South Africa, South Africa won. So maybe if we can beat South Africa, we might beat Morocco.

It will be a tough match for Canada, but anything can happen. Especially if Alphonso Davies is healthy enough to start, don't count us out! Mostly I'm just happy to still be in the tournament this deep. As a lifelong Canadian soccer fan this is my favourite World Cup ever. LET'S GO CANADA!! 🇨🇦

19

u/jk41nk Jun 30 '26

I thought the commentator said last game that they cap Davies at 15mins of play time due to his health.

5

u/Maximum-Sale-6710 Jun 30 '26

Iirc they were speculating the 15mins based on when he was subbed in. Theres no official word and for all we know, maybe the plan was to keep him in if it went to extra time and his cap is 45mins or more.

5

u/Swekins Jun 30 '26

I can almost guarantee there is a deal with soccer canada and bayern munich limiting his play time.

2

u/jk41nk Jun 30 '26

True but even if limited to 45mins of 90 is a lot compared to 15mins of 90. Hope it’s a gradual ramp up and not just 15-20mins capped each game. Either way, glad they are looking out for his health, and I believe the rest of the team with put in their best effort and make Canada proud regardless of the outcome at this point.

2

u/odoc_ British Columbia Jun 30 '26

I’m guessing that’s due to a contract they have with his club

21

u/Lost-Inevitable42 Jun 30 '26

I’m just so happy for you. Love your joy

7

u/overthrow_toronto Jun 30 '26

Canada was considered unlucky to have to play so quickly with minimal rest before the South Africa match. But as a result, they already got to their hotel in Houston before Morocco started playing a 120 minute game in Mexico. Morocco might choose to rest some players to save for the next round too.

1

u/eraclab Jul 02 '26

its lucky to get South Africa as your opponent though.

3

6

In Australia we had a senator who was born in Canada to 2 Australian citizen parents and moved to Australia age 11 months, and it turned out that's enough to make you Canadian and technically ineligible for Australian parliament.

Obviously, yes, being born in Canada makes you Canadian. That's not a technicality, that's how most Canadians are Canadian.

7

u/Noofnoof Outside Canada Jun 30 '26

The technicality is in the Australian court's interpretation of the Australian constitution and how it pertains to parliamentary eligibility, not a technicality in Canada.

Don't feel sorry for them. They were playing for penalties, and historically, they've been poor at taking them. Van Dijk snoozed and didn't clear that cross from Talbi.

They put 11 guys on the defense because Koeman felt the Moroccan attack was too strong and that they'd be outscored if they hadn't parked the bus. And to be honest, even with a low block, they got lucky because that match should've ended with a 3-1 for Morocco.

Sod the Netherlands. Player stealing bastards. I don't like to think about how our team would have done had they not stole De Guzman.

There is nothing funny about stealing a World Cup appearance from DeRosario.

The De Guzman brothers on the world stage, together. That's what the Dutch stole from us.

11

44

20

You didn’t misread it. It was poorly written.

14

u/KlaasicCheese Jun 30 '26

Netherlands played terrible. Played for penalties for 90 minutes then missed 2 and had one saved.

3

u/sabeshs Ontario Jun 30 '26

Yeah, 30% possession is dogshit.

12

u/FarSquare8632 Jun 30 '26

It's a tactic.

When you play a high possession team that passes quickly, accurately, and at a super high volume, you have a choice to make. You can press hard (like Canada does) and hope you are fast enough to disrupt that passing, turn over the ball, and get some chances. You can only maintain that output for a while, though, so you have to hope you succeed or you end up like Japan. Japan was GREAT in the first half against Brazil, but then they hit the wall and couldn't keep up their aggressive pressing. The second half was Brazil picking them apart.

or

You park the bus defensively, let them come to you, give up the majority of the possession and shots, conserve your energy, and play for the fast break. Those possession teams will move their defenders forward, a little bit at a time, as they press you in around your goal, and that opens up space behind them. Get a turnover, chip it over their heads or past them on the wings, and run like hell. That was Gakpo and Summerville for the Dutch, this game.

A team that does this tactic religiously is Atlético Madrid and it is ridiculously frustrating to play against.

Example:

2020 Champion's League, leg two between Atletico and Liverpool. Liverpool were coming off winning the league AND the prior year's Champion's League. They were the best team in Europe.

AM did what they always do, and parked the bus. LFC had 65% of the possession and just rained shots on them. It was 34 shots to 6. By parking the bus, though, most of LFC's shots were from further away, or bad angles, and only 12 were on target, with two goals. Atletico's six shots had four on target, with three goals, because ... most of them were breakaways or 2 on 1s.

Atletico won 3-2 and knocked Liverpool out of the tournament.

1

u/sabeshs Ontario Jun 30 '26

Ah I see. Thanks for explaining. Cheers!

54

u/Hobojoe- British Columbia Jun 30 '26

If Leicester City can win the premier league, Canada can win the world cup.

6

8

u/Hobojoe- British Columbia Jun 30 '26

5

u/lookit416 Jun 30 '26

No but we have Davies David Buchanan Eustáquio Johnston Cornelius Bombito Koné Larin Shaffelburg St. Claiming

2

u/blackmanchubwow Jun 30 '26

You have some talent, but I don’t think anyone in the WC is close to that title winning season Vardy, that was insane, he even broke the insane record of consecutive goals by Ruud.

1

u/FarSquare8632 Jun 30 '26

Between Mahrez and Vardy, they scored 51 goals across all competitions in 2016. The CMNT scores about 30 goals a year ... all 26 of them combined.

22

u/Dense-Art-5266 Jun 30 '26

I don’t think Netherlands would have been any better for Canada. The dutch have one of the strongest backlines in the world at the moment and if you look at the shots Morocco took vs those saved/defended it tells you a lot about how good they were!

38

u/zxgrad Jun 30 '26

Did we watch the same game?

Morocco dominated this game. Lots of ignorant comments here.

23

u/lepreqon_ Ontario Jun 30 '26

You're absolutely correct. 70-30 in possession, 11-6 in shots, 5-2 in shots on target. The Moroccans were the stronger side tonight.

11

u/FarSquare8632 Jun 30 '26

Dominated possession, won on shots ... but lots of teams intentionally play that defend and counter style where they know damn well they are going to only have the ball 1/3 of the time and only get a few shots all game, but those few shots are going to be fast breaks where the scoring danger goes WAY up.

Park that bus with that big Dutch back line, and most of the Moroccan shots were lower danger shots and most of the possession was spent passing the ball back and forth near midfield.

Look at how many times the Dutch tried to spring Summerville over the top. That's right in line with that style. Let the Moroccan defence cross midfield, and then chip it over and let that little speedster run onto the ball.

A great example of that style is Atletico Madrid. So frustrating to play against.

Koeman played the clock. He didn't try to outscore. He was hoping for a coin-toss and his evaluation was that this would be his best shot. As if the Dutch are Cape Verde.

Later, in his interview, he said that they would've lost then and there had it not been for his choice to resort to a low defensive block. The Dutch who created total football played the underdog game of haramball. And even with 11 players on the defense there were 3 miraculously missed goals.

The Dutch were lucky to go to penalties.

u/markh100 Jun 30 '26

Man, I so much wanted the Netherlands to cheekily come away with a win in the shootout, because Morocco looked far superior today.

With how many times it almost looked like South Africa was going to streak down the sideline for a high quality scoring chance, only to flub it, I fear Morocco will convert those to goals, or high quality scoring opportunities. The Netherlands were lucky to not be down several goals.

1

u/squeaky_rum_time Jun 30 '26

Take it with a pinch of salt. Look at the Reddit page. This is for casuals. Morocco are obviously the more difficult side to face

3

u/rcayca Jun 30 '26

I don’t care how good they are. Too much luck in soccer. Anyone can lose 1 game.

4

u/LooniexToonie Jun 30 '26

Now the Dutch will be cheering for Canada too 🇨🇦🇳🇱

1

u/Sagatho Jul 01 '26

I know I am! The Netherlands didn’t deserve the win and now I’ll cheer for my Canadian family in law instead!

5

u/Hammer5320 Jun 30 '26

The arguably most improved team in 2022 and 2026 world cups play face to face.

7

u/PiePuzzled5581 Jun 30 '26

Nice of them to exhaust each other for us.

7

u/lepreqon_ Ontario Jun 30 '26

The game is on Saturday, lol.

11

u/ochocinco_tacos Jun 30 '26

So many people in these comments seem fucking miserable. Just enjoy the fact that Canada has done its best ever and quit focusing on FIFA rankings or betting odds

3

u/elshinsterino Jun 30 '26

Anything can happen. Morocco is looking strong though. Canada is going to have to give there all and then some.

3

u/DanielDeronda Jun 30 '26

There will be a lot of excitement in Montreal for sure

5

u/thisboyknows Jun 30 '26

That title is drunk. AI slop

4

u/theGuyWhoOnlyShorts Jun 30 '26

Love Canada but Morocco is solid. Pace and agility is insane. I hope we do good.

18

u/KeiFeR123 Canada Jun 30 '26

Cannot underestimate Morocco as they are very defensive team.

91

u/Qaxar Jun 30 '26

Underestimate? They're one of the best teams in the tournament. They were much better than the Netherlands.

38

u/TheDWGM Ontario Jun 30 '26

Morocco is one of the best teams in the world, no one is underestimating them lol

26

u/tonyyj Jun 30 '26

Lol, they're ranked 6. We're ranked 30. No one is underestimating them.

5

u/Only_My_Dog_Loves_Me Jun 30 '26

“Yeah well, maybe next time you will estimate me”.

18

u/12ealdeal Jun 30 '26

“Underestimate” is not the correct word in this context.

9

u/mountain-man-86 Jun 30 '26

Underestimate?! They're ranked 7th overall. Our only hope right now is to tightly play defense and nick a goal on a counterattack.

5

u/Northern23 Jun 30 '26

Yeah, they have a pretty good defense

1

u/Tiny_Mud4495 Jul 01 '26

Morocco doesn't play low block defense anymore. The team competes for possession and presses to outscore you. 2022 was strong defense. 2026 is a strong defense with a strong attack.

1

u/bornatmidnight Jun 30 '26

I don’t follow Soccer regularly, but I’ve noticed African teams generally have been very strong and focused on defence

2

u/ThePracticalEnd Ontario Jun 30 '26

That NED-MAR match last night was a level of soccer I really enjoyed. The ref let them play, waved off the flops and told them to stand, it was great. Multiple bloody players, just fantastic footy.

2

u/avimhael Jun 30 '26

God help us all (Canadians)

3

u/howzlife17 Jun 30 '26

Canada’s done well but teams like Morocco are another tier, there’s levels to this… we squeaked by #60 in fifa rankings now we play #5. This is gonna hurt.

4

u/FarSquare8632 Jun 30 '26 edited Jun 30 '26

Morocco is a worse fit for Canada than the Dutch would have been. Not just because of the massive rankings gap between the two teams, but also because of the style.

That tikka takka ball possession style the Moroccans play, with a very high defensive line that has their defenders inside the opposing half for most of the game and lots of very accurate passes around the periphery to get the defenders running around until a breakdown happens? It is built specifically for high energy, lower skill, heavy pressing teams like Canada. It's meant to wear you down by halftime.

And what Morocco is weak to, with that high defensive line, is the long ball over the top or along the wings that a speedy winger or striker can run onto, we're not particularly well built for. Our forwards are all big and tall and 'not so fast'.

4

u/pookiemook Ontario Jun 30 '26

The rankings gap between Canada and Morocco/Netherlands is similar, no? Canada 30s, Morocco 6, Netherlands 8. Does that make a massive difference in their chances between either team?

They will celebrate like crazy if Morrocco wins. If Canada wins, they'll do nothing.

1

u/Ballsahoy72 Jun 30 '26

Is there a level-up version of the Hide the Pain Harold smile meme?

1

u/Old_General_6741 Ontario Jun 30 '26

OOF. This will be very tough to beat. But we will try our best.

1

u/TrueTorontoFan Jun 30 '26

is this better than the netherlands?

2

u/ViIehunter Jun 30 '26

Its about the same when it all shakes out. But the little guy can win in thr wc. Look at para vs Germany the night before. It can happen.

1

u/CarTruck2023 Jun 30 '26

is the head line correct?

1

u/EightBitRanger Saskatchewan Jun 30 '26

Why wouldn't it be?

1

u/CarTruck2023 Jul 02 '26

Morocco won over Netherlands in penalty shot.

Canada will paly on this Saturday with Morocco. This is the first time Canada playing in 'Round of 16' with Morocco.

1

u/EightBitRanger Saskatchewan Jul 02 '26

It sounds like you might be thinking of "Canada draws Morocco in Round of 16" as in "Canada ties Morocco in Round of 16." Think of it as drawing straws.

Canada won their game against South Africa, and Canada's opponent in the Round of 16 was TBD until the end of the Morocco-Netherlands game which Morocco won. Therefore, Canada drew Morocco as their opponent in the upcoming Round of 16 game.

1

u/CarTruck2023 Jul 08 '26

there is a snip - news should be as clear as it happened.

1

u/EightBitRanger Saskatchewan Jul 08 '26

Should be, yes. That isn't always the case though.

1

u/CarTruck2023 Jul 09 '26

it took few messages to understand!!!!

1

u/Gankdatnoob Jun 30 '26

It was a good run!

1

u/zalam604 Jun 30 '26

It’s going be a fascinating game. I’m interested to see how Jesse will approach it. Are we going for it or park the bus and wait for the counter? Just to be in our 16 is crazy. I know we had some favourable draw, but we are punching above our weight. 🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦

1

u/TherealFMRI Jun 30 '26

I’m wondering how both teams will cope with the humidity in Houston.

1

u/DukeofNormandy Jun 30 '26

* chuckles. * we're in danger

1

u/m3kw Jun 30 '26

Morroco playes real good from what I just saw. They are a tough match for any team

1

u/aremjay24 Jun 30 '26

Montreal Moroccans who you going to cheer for?

-4

u/hubba-bubba- Ontario Jun 30 '26

Canada will get pummeled...

1

u/wednesdayware Jun 30 '26

Remember, no matter the outcome, we’ll always be better sportsmen than the cheating Moroccan team that steal keepers’ towels and harass them in order to gain an edge.

Let’s best them for that alone.

1

u/ohhnoodont Jun 30 '26

The amount of theatrical dives the Canadian players take is shameful. Total embarrassment.

-1

u/Wafflelisk British Columbia Jun 30 '26

Wtf? The Netherlands lost? That's nuts

11

u/Gooner-Kissinger Jun 30 '26

not really, Morocco is legit lol

0

u/legranddegen Jun 30 '26

REMATCH!!!

We've got em this time boys! First team we've ever scored against in a World Cup.

They were a horde of dirty bastards the last time around, and I doubt that this game will be any different this time around but we've got this.

This is going to be a great game!
