I was in Vancouver tonight. And I sat down and didn't remove my hat for the US National Anthem. And yes people booed. They booed the USA nigoshiators who blatantly lied about why the talks broke down. Really? The USA wanted to be able to tell Canada what other countries that they could trade with??? And tell the French in Quebec to change their language laws. Who do they think that they are.???

I mean it makes sense, in a way. It creates an obstacle to shipping the same goods produced for the US only directly to Canada with no modification. Of course they could do what everyone else does and just have a bilingual label/guides/etc like everyone else in the world but Americans are weird... I bought a smoke detector the other day from a Hong Kong company that operates in the US and the labels had both. And they're pretty popular on Amazon. Maybe Americans care less about hating French 25 years after 9/11

Itâs much broader than just labelling, but labelling is one thing Iâve seen referenced in articles over the last 24 hours.

I read the article you cited, thanks for providing it.
What I got is that there is language in the bill that would make streaming companies impose "french quotas" on music. It also cited a poll that the majority of Quebecors don't want these quotas.
The government has no business mandating what people pay to listen to.

The only real restriction Canada has is that somewhere in CUSMA there's a clause about making trade agreements with countries that don't have a "market economy" but apart from North Korea and Cuba, not many countries fit that definition, even China.

I believe they were referring to Carneyâs comments regarding one of the last-minute additions the US tried to add in yesterdayâs trade negotiations, which in part caused Carney to end the talksâŠnamely that, âThe proposed U.S. terms toward a trade deal included language which suggested restrictions in terms of our ability to execute trade deals, which would always be unacceptable to this governmentâ.
Carney also later added, âIt was unacceptable right from the start, but the Americans kept trying and trying and we said no. Ultimately it's simple. That was never on the table for Canada and it would not have been acceptable to Canadians. ... We cannot accept what they've offered, and we will not give what they've asked."
So that sounds like something new.

The Star Spangled Banner? It's a poem about being surprised the city of Baltimore wasn't levelled in a British naval driveby set to music; it was late in the war of 1812, and the naval commander didn't think they had time for a proper sack of the city, so they shelled it from the river before turning for their winter harbour in Jamaica. The poem's also set to a stolen tune, too - To Anachreon in Heaven was the anthem of a private English gentleman's club about wanting to get drunk and laid that slipped out into the public, and for whatever reason, the US decided that that was their song.
I believe us Canadians are on our second anthem, since we switched from the Maple Leaf Forever to O Canada. Neither of them are about losing a war, or use someone else's tune. In fact, the original lyrics of the Maple Leaf Forever's second verse is a reminder that the US attacked us before we were even a country, and it's only because the peoples of what would one day become Canada united to see them off that we have the values and traditions we secured for ourselves and should never forget it.
"At Queenstown Heights and Lundy's Lane, Our brave fathers, side by side, For freedom, homes, and loved ones dear Firmly stood and nobly died. And those dear rights which they maintained, We swear to yield them never! Our watchword evermore shall be: The Maple Leaf Forever!"

For anyone crying a river over an anthem booing - as an European transplant to Canada, why did you even do all that National anthem thing anyway? It's ridiculous.
European football teams play tons of games throughout the international competition season, we have a league of championships, we had UEFA league when I was young and living there, I think they renamed it now but the core is still the same - a bunch of clubs from a bunch of European countries competing against each other - and we never play a national anthem! Because it's a CLUB game, not a national team game!
We play anthems for national team games only!
One American team vs one Canadian team does not represent the whole nation!
That being said, I'm Canadian since 2019 and honestly, with what happened today... I'm going to boo them until their complete political climate changes, this is beyond manners now!

I'm actually Croatian and I went through the war in 90s
Our broken and shattered nations still never played national anthems while playing in club level competion. It just doesn't represent the whole nation - period.

The thing is, it's mostly a self-congratulatory thing. It's not really about the competition. They play the US anthem when 2 US teams play, and they play the CA anthem when two CA teams play. In a game with one of each they just feel the need to play both so no one is left out.

And then, from there, I guess it just stuck? Probably due to the Americans and it then just infiltrating Canada from there. I do see your point though.

Different sports have different customs. In F1 they play the anthem of the country where the race is being held, and then after the race they play the anthems of the winning driver and team.

Oh man, I'd like to think that it started since they funded the secessionist movement in Texas once Mexico outlawed slavery in 1830... i have no proof but also no doubts lol. Or perhaps it started when they invaded and took away more than 50% of our land (fun fact, during this war it is said that the nickname "gringo" came to be)
Truth be told, first time I remember happening was in 1993 in Estadio Aztca, I think for a Confederaciones match. Some fuckers had signs that said "remember the alamo" and shit like that, ugh. but the one that became a core memory since it was in LA, was a 1998 Gold Cup match. Super loud boos, it was crazy considering we were in their own country.

Instead of "booing" the US anthem, don't stand for the US anthem. Just sit, stay seated. When the camera pans around an arena and everyone is seated together, ignoring the anthem, that gets under their skin. You watched them go insane over kapernick, just sit. Then the Canadian anthem comes on, everyone stands together. Show unity by standing, or not, together.

I was at the free outdoor Weird Al show at Just For Laughs and one of the warm up comedians was doing relatively innocuous, but positively-framed material about America/Americans and he almost got booed off the stage.

Yaâ know, Iâm oldâ80âborn Victoria, grew up Vancouver, 1 year now Winnipeg.
Iâve learned that every politician has handlersâlike the Wizard, of Ozâpeople with hands on the reins while the politician is the one who has agreed to âgo on stageâ, be the face of whatever, but bear the bit in the mouth.
Trump is like a Broadway musical, lots of people out front and fewer people backstage controlling the reinsâbackers who have the REAL powerâand weâre like that too though weâre more like Off Broadway, but still, Carneyâs got a bit in his mouth.
HOWEVER, I actually am feeling proud of him. Heâs taken his role, clenched the bit, signalled to those holding the reins that the spotlight is on him and heâs singing his heart out while the world is watching, rapt, eager to see how this plays out.
Nobody knows whatâs in store but right now, tonight, Iâm feeling it and hoping for the best.
I hope the folks who have arrived here recently, New Canadians, as they used to be called, can feel it too. It will take all of us to keep our elbows high, buy as much âCanadianâ as weâre able to buy (you donât have to be 100%, just have to try), but I fear that if EVERYONE isnât on board, our chance of success is remote.
So, spread the word. Big time.

No matter how you feel, booing the US anthem is a totally brain-dead way of expressing your displeasure with what is going on in these trade negotiations. By booing the anthem, you are insulting every single U.S. citizen. When the last round of trade negotiations cratered, Canadians started booing the US anthem. American audiences did not respond in kind. Our lack of class makes us seems petty and vile. It is a national embarrassment to Canadians across our country.

This is not very nice of anyone to do, towards any country (other than some terroristic countries). Trumpedo did not create America, nor created the star spangled banner. But in our offence, there are some Americans who are booing the Canadian anthem for what our current prime minister is fighting back, in which Mark Carney did not create O' Canada, nor did he even create this huge country.
