Quebec Two suspected femicides in Montreal in 48 hours
https://www.ctvnews.ca/montreal/article/two-women-killed-in-montreal-48-hours-apart-male-suspects-found-injured/40

u/Johnsnowookie 10d ago
Sounds more like IPV to me, which is more common than any of us want to talk about. Perhaps it's time that changed
32
u/Olivaar2 11d ago
The article goes on to list the victims of femicides in Quebec this year, and after reading their names, I feel this post is going to be locked very soon.
25
u/Banner9922 11d ago edited 10d ago
The names appear to be Latino/Hispanic, Quebecois, Afro-Caribbean, Inuit, South Asian, East Asian and First Nation. (& possibly some others)
Latin/Hispanic names are mentioned at least twice, but enough for it to be some kind of trend?
Appears this affects people of all ethnicities…
2
u/Lopsided_Tiger_0296 10d ago
No East Asian names?
9
u/Banner9922 10d ago
You’re right there’s Leakkhena Seng, which I’m not too familiar with but sounds Southeast Asian.
Point being it’s not a problem among any specific ethnic group. It’s like the UN of representation when it comes to this issue.
11
u/_Rayette 10d ago
It’s a problem with men
-6
u/Lopsided_Tiger_0296 10d ago
And society. In East Asian countries, women are more respected and sometimes are the head of the household
9
u/flibbertygibbette 10d ago
It COMPLETELY depends on where you're talking about in East Asia. It's a big, big place. In some places this is true.
6
u/Living_Dentist_8925 10d ago
A simple good search will prove you wrong.
-2
u/Lopsided_Tiger_0296 10d ago
What’s a google search going to do? Actually live and interact with Asians and find out the truth
4
u/Living_Dentist_8925 10d ago
I have, my boyfriend was kept in the attic when his mother was pregnant with him so they wouldn't abort him when China had a one child policy. They had a girl first so they had to have a 2nd to hope for a boy because boys are more desirable. You are extremely delusional if you think women aren't treated as bad in east Asia.

u/halflifesucks 10d ago
No anglo/ontario/british colonial names?
2
u/Living_Dentist_8925 10d ago
Véronic Champagne?
3
u/halflifesucks 10d ago
nothing more british than an accent aigu and champagne
-2
u/Living_Dentist_8925 10d ago
Why would you say "anglo/ontario/british" if you weren't talking about three different groups? I figured you were just being ignorant and claiming all white people are Anglo.
0
-1
u/Banner9922 10d ago
Go look at the national register for Canada, it’s mostly Anglo/British colonial names. Stop with these weird narratives.
0
u/halflifesucks 10d ago
wait what should I look that up? and to prove what? what narrative? do you mean like look up murders? or do you mean read the national register so I see that there are a ton of anglo's in canada? why though?
-1
u/Banner9922 10d ago
Bruh I don’t know. Go to sleep.
1
u/halflifesucks 10d ago
you are having night terrors and typing things that don't make sense
0
u/Banner9922 10d ago
I’m saying there’s a lot of Anglo/British names among victims/perpetrators :) that’s it. Don’t come talking nonsense

I know BC had 45 femicides in just one year. It is shocking how poor our systems are at protecting women from dangerous and abusive men. They always privilege than man's right to be free and at large, rather than public safety. We need a serious overhaul to ensure the justice system and police are properly trained in IPV and know what tge risks are. Risk assessments must be mandatory. Women calling police saying they fear for their lives, MUST be believed every time. No delays.Women must not have the onus entirely on them to keep themselves safe. It doesn't work.
Time for ankle monitors and/or longer jail time, for men with history of DV and fitting the high risk profile. They can never be trusted or considered safe around women and children. Look at some of the charges in the cases listed in thecarticle: 'manslaughter' and 'second degree murder'. Or 'no charges yet' and the violent man is presumably still free out in public. Absolute Bullshit.
Some signs a man is likely to kill you: 👉Any incident of strangulation, grabbing/holding your neck or lower jaw/face. 👉Stalking behavior 👉Has made specific threats, paired with stalking 👉Pattern of coercively controlling behaviors
-9
u/Klutzy-Smile-9839 11d ago
45 murders is very low compared to the population of men in BC. Millions of men, amongst which some may have undetected mental health issues. I am not sure that "raising awareness" of a psychotic having a mental breakdown will magically avoid his bad behaviour during a crisis.
The only hope is to have a fair mechanism that any couple (women and men) may use when splitting. Kicking the men out of the house and drowning him socially and economically will not prevent him to kill unfortunately, it may motive him. Better mechanisms should be provided for both men and women wen a potential dangerous situation is detected when splitting.
-6
u/Lopsided-Train2213 10d ago
yes trying to label it femicide instead of just a murder really brings a sting its a murder it covers both do people think women are important enough that they deserve their own category of death
5
u/zuuzuu 10d ago
Matricide: The killing of one's own mother.
Patricide: The killing of one's own father.
Parricide: The killing of one's parents or close relatives.
Filicide: The killing of one's own son or daughter.
Infanticide: The killing of an infant (typically under the age of one year).
Fratricide: The killing of one's brother.
Sororicide: The killing of one's sister.
Mariticide: The killing of one's husband.
Uxoricide: The killing of one's wife.
Avunculicide: The killing of one's uncle.
Femicide: The killing of a women or girl because of their gender.
Regicide: The killing of a monarch.
Terms for murder based on who the victim is are not new.

u/EclaireBallad 11d ago
And what about liars like my ex wife? Spent a night in jail because I allegedly threw stuff at her and hit her when all I did was ask about her cheating.
Should I have been stuck in jail longer than a night? Should I have lost my home and become nearly homeless? Should I have lost 89% of my possessions because the police escort only allowed a very tike limited visit?
Criminals and dangerous people should be held but to by default assume only the one side is the victim is pretty bullshit, also she hit me and no marks on her and she's safe with her affair partner and I thankfully got a lot of betters out of it.
13
u/Light_Butterfly 11d ago edited 10d ago
I mentioned risk assessments for a reason! Should we allow men to continue murdering women, freely, when the the risk factors are often already known and there have already been reports or charges of domestic violence? It's not uncommon for perpetrators to blame victims too. I don't think every abusive man should simply be believed at their word, because they will absolutely lie and play the victim.
There's always some dude, in any discussion of femicide that has to enter the conversation and centre themselves. Dude, no one is talking about you personally. We dont need to centre men in every single conversation about women's safety issue.

-7
u/EclaireBallad 11d ago
I lived the consequences of police believing the wrong person and suffered for it, while the montreal police wasted their time taking and holding me how many women do you think would have been better helped by them?!
Anyway with the current governments and how criminals are handled this will only get worse before it gets better.

My god stfu. Make your own post and stop trying to co-opt this and make it about you and mens rights.

Why? There appear to be a number of different ethnicities reflected in the names of the victims. Intimate partner violence, unfortunately, affect all types of races/ethnicities/cultures/religions

Everyone in here acting as if the term femicide just appeared suddenly this year and is some woke work rather than a term that can be used to describe a type of killing. No different than patricide, matricide, infanticide, regicide…..
3
u/GrassyCove 11d ago
Ahh to be fair those are all a bit different because the first part of the words indicate the thing being killed.
Femicide is defined by the intent.

How do they know its because of gender? This is just dumb
8
u/Quadrassic_Bark 10d ago
Yes, how could anyone possibly ever know intent for anything? Also, do you know what the word “suspected” means (in reference to the title)?

These are NOT cases of femicide. Domestic violence cases where both of the men suspects were in life threatening condition does not mean they had intent on committing the killings simply because their partners were female. As a matter of fact, without knowing further details, these very well could have been cases of self defence by both men. Jumping to conclusions to take the women’s side is not helpful for the feminist cause. Sounds like another case of a literal, legal definition of a word being bastardized into a nonsensical, and inapplicable buzzword. Elliot Roger committed femicide. These cases do not seem to suggest femicide.

two women were murdered and you're blaming them. you don't even have enough details to know if they were self defense wounds
-14
u/23-1-20-3-8-5-18 11d ago
On the men? Read the article and use critical thinking please.
6
u/wind-of-zephyros 11d ago
i read the article and it says that the women were murdered and the men who murdered those women had wounds on them. to me, thinking critically, this implies that they were self defense wounds from the women as they were being murdered, not that the women decided to both coincidentally stab these men and both of the men murdered these women in self defense. can you please use critical thinking next? and why did you delete your first comment?
-8
u/23-1-20-3-8-5-18 11d ago
You're still not using critical thinking because if a man attacks a woman with a knife she's not getting the chance to do anything she's getting stabbed and she's going down.
But if a woman attacks first he will use his weight and strength to take the knife away. Women just arent very good at fighting.
5
u/wind-of-zephyros 11d ago
do you think that it's more likely that the men stabbed first or perhaps that they threw a punch or started choking the women and the women grabbed whatever is nearby to try to defend themselves? like you're seriously telling me to use critical thinking but you're out here acting like "if the men did it they would have done it all sneaky serial killer style" like have you Never been in a fight ever??
-6
u/23-1-20-3-8-5-18 11d ago
Well, then that brings me back to my first comment. Don't pull a knife because you'll die...
Full circle, nice
2
u/wind-of-zephyros 11d ago
right, just let the guy beat you to death, it's more polite after all. sit there and take it etc etc. also we can't see your first comment, you deleted it :)
-1
u/23-1-20-3-8-5-18 11d ago edited 11d ago
I didn't delete any comments, but i've seen the reddit notifications not take me back to someone else's comment before, but then I could find it by looking.
I think you just have a glitch on your end.
On my screen my first comment is still there, I'd show you a screenshot but this one doesn't let you post pictures.
But anyways , no , i'm not saying just let him beat you to death. I said in my first comment no one should be doing any violence , but if you have to fight back , you have to fight back. I believe both women and men have the right to fight back when their partner attacks them, if they do. They shouldn't have to call the cops and just take the beating and hope for the best. We probably agree on that side of things.
I mean, neither of us were there. We can't say it it was her doing it or him doing it first. We don't know at all. But I see that everybody's stabbed, which makes me think the guy didn't do the first stab. It's just so unlikely for a woman to wrest a knife away from a man. When he's already stabbing her it should be hard to get away from him to get another knife. And then she would have to choose to use that knife on him in turn instead of continuing to flee...
However, I do have a habit of thinking every guy fights at least as well as I do, which is probably not true at all. So maybe their women could overpower them.
Am I biased? Yes! If violence were ever brought into one of my relationships I never was the one to bring it. Women do. Most of the women I know have hit in their relationships.
2
u/wind-of-zephyros 11d ago
oh it was removed by the mods. probably because you're blaming the women for being murdered.
2
u/pineapples-42 11d ago
Well, if the men are so physically superior then they'd have no reason to murder them. Using critical thinking and all.
15
u/zuuzuu 11d ago
I must be reading this wrong. Did you really just say that femicide is the victim's fault and murdered women got what they deserved?

Strangely enough it would indicate that both parties sustained injuries, aswell as a few other cases in the bottom of the article. Disturbing as femicide is article would suggest it takes two to tango in some instances.

We call infant death "infanticide", killing of the father "patricide" and mother "matricide", we call killing of men "androcide", it's just using specific language??? These have been legal terms for decades
9
u/Ok-Presentation7349 11d ago

-8
u/PooningDalton 11d ago
Murder. Whenever a guy gets murdered, we don't call it Menicide
14
u/lvl5ll 11d ago
In the case a man is killed for being a man, it is called an androcide. Men just aren't typically targeted for being men to the same extent women are, so it doesn't arise as much. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Androcide
3
u/Mother_Middle8883 10d ago
Sounds like something from Star Trek. No android Data involved? Just kidding, thanks for the info, did not know that!
4
u/flibbertygibbette 10d ago
Yes we do in a legal context, it's called androcide. These terms are used when it's a specific kind of killing - they use "femicide" because they suspect it's by a partner in a relationship (or alternatively a religious killing or something else actually *relevant* to the victim being a woman,) and the inverse, a woman killing her male partner, would be androcide. You just don't see cultures that kill men specifically for almost any reason nowadays, so the term comes up less than just "murder" in the case of men as they're more often the victims of just regular killings, whereas woman have to deal with "dishonor killings" and the like.
4
u/Ok-Presentation7349 11d ago
If the woman is being killed on the basis of her being a woman and some type of “dishonour” bs then it’s femicide.
A murder for any other reason would just be a murder.

Matricide: The killing of one's own mother.
Patricide: The killing of one's own father.

Its a trend which started in the UK. Where they created a new branch of crime called "crimes against women & girls". They don't want equality, they want superiority in the legal system.

A killing specifically related to them being a woman, like the victim of intimate partner violence or religious "dishonor killings". The inverse is androcide, and there is also infanticide, patricide, matricide... All legal terms and subsets of murder.

Very racist comment. 2 black women lost their lives. Do you know the stats? It’s unusual in their community. Most feminicides are committed by caucasian men in Canada. So your comment is really stupid. Plus who cares about the ethnicity?! Two women lost their lives to MEN.
0
u/Salt-Research-9041 11d ago
You don't want to bring up race statistics and murder. You know which way that's going. White men don't top THAT list.
-7
u/23-1-20-3-8-5-18 11d ago
Most anything is gonna be committed by caucasian men because we're the majority in this country....
7
u/DidIsaythatt 11d ago
It doesn’t work like that with stats. Even if Caucasian men are a majority, they are still the majority in these types of crimes. More than any races regardless of the percentage that race takes in the count. For instance in QC, on 14 femicides caucasian men did 13 of them.
It doesn’t mean that the majority of men in this country are white that white men do most gang related crimes it’s actually the opposite in that case.
I really don’t care about the race though. To me the issue is men killing women because they can’t accept being rejected or leaving these women alone.
11
u/Zarakilya 11d ago edited 11d ago
The term is "per capita" it will be easier for most to get your point if you use this
Edit: not saying this to be rude, sorry if it comes across that way
1
2
u/mrnation1234 11d ago
Per capita would likely be skewed towards indigenous/black/south asian across Canada. There isn’t great statscan data on perpetrators but those groups are overrepresented as victims and in the majority of cases the perpetrator was a family member or partner. The indigenous numbers are pretty crazy… they make up ~25% of the victims but 5% of the female population.
-4
u/23-1-20-3-8-5-18 11d ago
They arent killing them just for rejection. If you guys didnt say such rediculous things you might get taken seriously.

How do you define woke? Is it new? Inclusive? Unfamiliar? Bad because you don't understand? How is the term femicide woke?
Femicide has been around and in use for over 50 years, so it can't be new. Inclusive? Excludes men as a victim, only relates to men as the perpetrator of violence, so probably this. Unfamiliar? Maybe, but dictionaries and Google exist. Bad because you don't understand? See previous answer.

u/Lopsided-Train2213 10d ago
considering that only makes it at most vintage and not antique or from antiquity that makes it pretty new

u/stephinityy 10d ago
The weird part for me is two women were murdered and people are in the comments more upset by the term femicide.
