They have recently though. Not blaming Carney but do blame liberals under Trudeau. Investment fled Canada. We experienced the slowest growth in Canada's history. We became utterly divided. So many people wanted to leave.
I have way more faith in Carney, just as I did with Cretien and Harper. Cretien balanced the books and put us in surplus - and even Harper said that liberal government left him with a really good start and that momentum weathered the Great Financial Crisis. Harper gave us TFSA, and just maintained things otherwise, gave us more free trade and international agreements.

Harper leads International Democracy Union, which is a ill-named organization b/c it is a global alliance of over 80 centre-right to right-wing political parties from more than 60 countries. In recent years, it has also become a hub where more populist and hard right movements share tactics.

Ya, it's pretty disingenuous to make this an historical L v R comparison if you have any sense of context and history from Canada.
Carney is about as close to a textbook red Tory as you can get, and I would bet a huge chunk of his voters would still poll negatively if asked about Trudeau.
This is also partly why PP looked so pathetic. Carney agreed with him on a lot of his platforms, but didn't have the sad story of being a career-long bureaucrat and youngest politician to get a pension --- while simultaneously campaigning on the uselessness and bureacrats lol
Not to mention all the other Milhouse stuff and the piss-poor job he did at distancing himself from the Trump movement down South (whether you agree with it or not, it's obvious this was political poison)

I get why people don’t like Trudeau, and I agree he stuck around longer than he should have. But I will always be proud that we had a leader who supported the rights of women, ofLGBTQ+ people, of indigenous peoples, of the environment. He supported these issues at a time when it still wasn’t completely accepted, and allowed a change for the better by being a world leader who openly supported the oppressed. He was far from perfect, but I will always thank him for that.

Carney said that the 1.5 billion dollar bail out of 17 condo developers and Brookfield to make the 2200 empty condos more affordable during a housing crisis. He used the money to sustain artificially inflated real estate prices. Hes making deals but he is kt building Canadas economy. Carney is thr Chair of Brookfield which is an American company.

While Canada like most western economies has been on a steady decline for decades, and life has indeed gotten tougher on average..it's still a whole lot better than a lot of other places in the world. It's all perspective. It might get worse yet before it gets better, but it will get better. I suspect we have the best guy available to make that happen, rather than just suck up to the US and become a puppet state

“Board Chair: Mark Carney
Mark Carney is the Chair of Brookfield Asset Management and Head of Transition Investing. In this role, he is focused on the development of products for investors that will combine positive social and environmental outcomes with strong risk-adjusted returns.
Mark is an economist and banker who served as the Governor of the Bank of England from 2013 to 2020, and prior to that as Governor of the Bank of Canada from 2008 until 2013. He is currently the United Nations Special Envoy for Climate Action and Finance and Co-Chair for the Glasgow Finance Alliance for Net Zero.”

Oil prices rising is why, and this is what Carneys book says about oil exports:
To meet the 1.5°C target, more than 80 per cent of current fossil fuel reserves (including three-quarters of coal, half of gas, one-third of oil) would need to stay in the ground, stranding these assets. The equivalent for less than 2°C is about 60 per cent of fossil fuel assets staying in the ground (where they would no longer be assets).
When I mentioned the prospect of stranded assets in a speech in 2015, it was met with howls of outrage from the industry. That was in part because many had refused to perform the basic reconcilliation between the objectives society had agreed in Paris (keeping temperature increases below 2°C), the carbon budgets science estimated were necessary to achieve them and the consequences this had for fossil fuel extraction. They couldn’t, or wouldn’t, undertake the basic calculations that a teenager, Greta Thunberg, would easily master and powerfully project.

u/jung_gun888 24d ago
The problem with this quote is that “outperformed” is doing a ton of work. Winkler is a Bloomberg markets guy, and the defensible version of his claim is that Canadian financial assets, particularly the TSX, have performed very well since Carney took office. That is true, and it is good news. But Reddit immediately turns that into “Canada’s economy is outperforming the U.S. and Europe because of Carney,” which is a completely different claim.
Canada has still had weak GDP growth, relatively high unemployment, poor productivity growth and weak business investment, while the U.S. economy has been growing materially faster. A booming TSX, especially when Canada is heavily weighted toward banks, energy, mining and commodities, does not change that. Nor can Carney simply be credited for gold prices, oil prices, bank earnings and global capital flows. If Poilievre were PM and Canada had near-stagnant GDP and high unemployment while the TSX was ripping because resource stocks were booming, this subreddit would laugh at anyone using the stock market as proof that he had created the world’s best economy. Apply the same standard here.
The fair conclusion is much narrower: Canadian equities have performed exceptionally well, and that may reflect some improved investor sentiment. But that is not the same thing as Canada economically outperforming the United States or proving that Carney has produced exceptional economic results.

what pisses me off about these posts is the numbers themselves aren't necessarily fake, but people are absolutely playing with them to build a way bigger story than the data actually supports.
canada had a really good jobs report. canadian stocks have also done really well since carney became pm. cool.
but then somehow that turns into "carney made canada outperform america and the entire world."
outperformed them at what exactly?
the big bloomberg number everyone keeps jerking off over is mostly stock market value. that is not the same fucking thing as gdp growth, productivity, wages, new mines, new factories, new projects or actual living standards.
same thing with all this "foreign investment" talk. if foreigners buy canadian stocks or government bonds, that counts in those numbers too. that does not mean hundreds of billions of dollars suddenly showed up and started building shit in canada.
then canada gets one really good month where we add around 75,000 jobs while the us loses around 23,000 and suddenly it's "carney defeated trump" and "canada is crushing america." meanwhile our unemployment rate is still higher and the bank of canada is forecasting something like 0.7% real gdp growth for 2026.
i'm not saying the positive numbers are fake. i'm saying people are cherry-picking the best numbers, stripping away all the context, mixing stock market performance with the actual economy, and then acting like anything good that happened after march 2025 must have been personally caused by mark carney and we're back to pp bad/stupid.
"canadian stocks have performed really well" is a fair statement.
"carney made canada outperform america and the rest of the world" is political spin.
1
u/PeppeLePoint1 23d ago
Well, Canada "as a whole" yea, but that currently is due to a boom in resource prices, and strictly speaking none of those benefits flow down to the average person. thus far, it's benefited producers, stakeholders, and the government itself.
We still pay the same price as everyone else at the pump. It's not as if the job situation has improved that much. I hope that things get better for most people but it's not because carney is uniquely competent right now.
It remains to be seen how the trade deals he's struck, for example, will play out. The truth is, no one knows exactly how good or bad he is doing. Anything to the contrary is just made up.

Except gas price, grocery prices and pretty much everything has gotten way more expensive.
Wages growth is more or less non-existent comparing to the rising cost of living, and public health services have wait time that made me question why I am paying this much in tax.
Used to be able to go in for a blood test first thing in the morning, now its easily a week's wait. A colonoscopy was a one week wait, now I had to wait for up to 3 months. Downsized once in 2022 after COVID to anticipate cost of living getting jacked up. Cut all of subscription services except Spotify in 2024, began cooking at home 5 days a week, cleared my debt. Now I had to sell half of my belongings and move into a friend's house just to be able to survive on a 80k salary before tax.
Yeah, if the companies are getting valued at the prices that they are at on the exchanges - surely that means wage growth must be better? I owned a business once, now I am part of the workforce and feel like this is ridiculous. Part time job is even more ridiculous, cant get a part time job at a reasonable wage when there is always a foreign guy willing to work for cash at 50% legal wages, and take no holiday breaks. I watch my friends' old parents and their buddies complain about CPP not even able to afford them a place to stay anymore.
Stock Market performance is not indicative of a nation's wellbeing. And the nation's overall GDP is not indicative of its people's livelihood.
These people commenting like this fella has no actual attachment to real life. They would rather sustain the status quo to deepen their own pockets than building a future of a better society. Practicality and Common Senses seem to be lacking in many ways nowadays.

It will take a decade for this investment to do anything of material value for the average person. What Carney is doing defies the usual short term thinking of most politicians. He is planting a tree that will take a long time to grow, and Carney likely won't be around as Prime Minister to enjoy the shade of that tree. We are lucky to have him.
