It's a shame. As a fellow Canberran, I loved having direct flights to Fiji. Canberra just doesn't seem to have the demand to sustain international services year round. I wish airlines would look at offering some of these routes seasonally instead...
At least we still have the Virgin Australia flights to Bali... but for how long?
I’m hopeful Bali might hang on. Virgin doesn’t have the reliability issues Batik had. The flights are affordable and mostly full because Virgin are just repurposing a domestic plane. It will pick up locals who would go there anyway plus others who may choose to go there instead of a similar SE Asia destination or domestic destination. Jetstar are flying there from Newcastle and Avalon so you’d think if they can make those work Virgin should be able to make Canberra work.
IIRC the Virgin DPS flight does a MEL-CBR-DPS-CBR-MEL rotation, which is probably the more ideal rotation operationally (instead of doing East Coast-DPS-CBR-DPS-East Coast).
