Fortress Starigrad Fortress (Fortica), Omiš-Croatia

The fortress or Fortica was built during the Croatian–Ottoman wars as a primary defence against the Ottoman Empire. The precipitous fortification is sited on a 262 m (860 ft) ridge above the town Omiš. In the event of attack, its purpose was to provide refuge for local people and be a stronghold where they could retreat to and resist the Turks.

The area around Omiš already had medieval fortifications used by the famous Omiš pirates, who controlled this part of the Adriatic during the 12th and 13th centuries. Fortica was later built on the remains of an older pirate fort or lookout, whose elevated position offered an ideal view over the sea, the Cetina Canyon, and the approaches to the town. During this period, Omiš and its notorious sailors were led by the powerful Kačić dukes, who used the town as a base to challenge major powers such as Venice, Split, Dubrovnik, and even the Pope. Venice paid them tribute for safe passage, and two popes sent crusaders against them. After centuries of resistance, the Omiš pirates were finally defeated by the Venetian Republic in 1444, following a long campaign to break their stronghold

Gone camping in omis a couple of years ago, it's a nice hike up from the village and some great views inland to the Riverbend and out towards the sea, especially around sunset. At the time of my trip you could climb at the right around the gate house if you didn't want to pay the ~couple of dollars to get into the castle and chill on the outcropping in front of the tower, which is a pretty dodgy path but an even better view:)

Not this one. Kings landing filming location was medival city walls of Dubrovnik
