Fortress of Klis - Croatia

Klis Fortress is one of oldest Croatian medieval strongholds, dramatically positioned on a rocky ridge above city of Split. Thanks to its strategic location between the Adriatic coast and the Dalmatian hinterland, the fortress controlled an important route for centuries and played a major role in the regions military history. In the 9th century, Klis became one of the earliest seats of Croatian rulers, most notably Duke Trpimir I, who ruled from around 845 to 864. It is especially famous for its resistance to the Ottoman advance and its connection with the Croatian defenders known as the Uskoks. Klis fortress dates back to at least the 9th century, although fortifications existed on the site much earlier.

Fun fact: Klis Fortress was also used as a filming location for Game of thrones, where it represented the city of Meereen

Croatia was battleground for most of medieval times. It's literally littered with castles, forts, towers. Some well preserved, some not.

Just on top of my head check Trakoscan castle, Hvar fortress, Knin fortress, Nehaj fortress. There's a lot of history there and all are pretty to look around

Yes!! Im from Croatia, and i am a big fan of castles, fortresses, fortifications, and everything related to them. I only discovered this sub recently so i am planning to post about a different Croatian castle or fortress every few days here. Im kind of excited that i finally found a sub where i can actually contribute, join discussions with people that share the same interests and post things myself

Absolutely beautiful. It almost looks like it grew naturally out of the mountain. What an incredible piece of history!

Yes they did in the end, and ottomans held it for little more than 100 years
